Commodores Are Edged By Portland Nine Portland pushed over a run in the last of the seventh inning to hand the Decatur Catholic Commodores a 7-6 loss at the Portland diamond Wednesday afternoon. The Commodores had held a 6-4 lead before Portland rallied to tie the contest in the sixth frame, and then win it in the seventh. Williams .walked to open the seventh, Glasgow reached first on an error and Foster walked to load the bases. J. Minch then promptly singled to give his team the decision. The Commodores had taken a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when they scored twice on a double by Terry Myers, an error allowing Ed Kohne to reach base, a sacrifice by Jim McGill and another Portland error. An error and two walks enabled the Portland nine to regai* the • lead in their half of the fourth, a 3-2 margin. The Commodores, however, broke loose for four big tallies in the fifth frame on only two hits. Dan Lose’s first of two singles in the game opened the fifth, and John Lose reached first on a fielder's choice. After Dick Omlor walked and Terry Myers reached base on an error, Ed Kohne pumped out a double to score two more runs. Portland scored a single tally in the fifth without the benefit of a hit, and then tied the contest in the sixth on a double by Bennett, a double by McDaniel and a single by Minch. Bennett received the win for Portland, going the route. Terry Myers, Commodore righthander, suffered the loss. Decatur AB R H E J. Dave Anspaugh Sets School Vault Record
A pole vault record that had stoood many, many challenges in 39 years went by the boards Wednesday afternoon — broken by a hard-working sophomore at Decatpr high school. Davfe Anspaugh cracked the oldest Decatur high school track and field record on the books during the Northeastern Indiana conference meet at Columbia City Wednesday —a record that had stood since 1924. Anspaugh soared 11 feet, three inches on his first attempt at that height, to break the recognized school record of 11 feet. Don Farr, who now resides in Americus, Ga., set the former standard during the 1924 season, some 39 years ago, under the school’s track coach at that time, Tom Moore. Anspaugh had never gone beyond 10 feet, .six inches previous to the conference meet Wednesday, bu t took advantage of perfect weather conditions and a fine track to shatter the record he had been aiming at the past two years. Antiquated Mark The ancient record was by far the oldest of the school’s track and field records. The second oldest is the 1946 record of Paul Bucher, who ran the 100-yard dash in 10.1 seconds. The youngster finished in a tie for third and fourth places in the NEIC meet, but actually amazed the other vaulters as he was one of only two vaulters to clear 11 fefet with a metal pole. Five of six others clearing 11 feet were all using the modern method — fiberglass poles, including the two who finished above them. The fiberglass jumpers wer6 quite awed that anyone using a metal pole could clear 11 feet. Anspaugh nearly went over the 11 feet, six-inch mark, just nickInternational League Northern Division W L Pct. ing the bar on his third attempt. He tied his previous high mark by clearing 10-6, and then missed once before clearing the 10-9 barrier. He made his record leap on his first attempt, after missing once before clearing 11 feet. Anspaugh is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Anspaugh of Homestead No. 9. He began pole valuting only prior to his freshman season. He was quarterback of the football team and a guard on the basketball team during the past seasons. This was the seventh school track and field mark to be broken in the past three seasons, and the second broken this year. A week ago, Buster Melchi, a junior, broke a 15-year-old record in the high hurdles. Melchi ran the hurdles, in 16,7, one-tentlk.Qf a second under the previous standard of 16.8 set by Jack Heller in the 1948 season. Last season Mike Shannon set a mark of 4:43.0 in the mile run, and Jim Elliott established a new standard of 21.7 in the low hurdles. In the 1961 season Dennis Bollenbacher set a mark of 22.5 in the 220-yard dash, and Herb Magley tossed the shot put 47 feet, 10 inches. The same year, Bollenbacher Ed Nelson, Stu Knodel and Dan Poling set a new 880-relay jnark of 1:34.7. The next step for Anspaugh is use of a fiberglass pole, which is being planned now. The school is expected to purchase the newtype pole yet this season to allow Anspaugh to practice with it during the summer months. With two more track seasons ahead of him with a fiberglass pole — the sky's the limit!
