Single copies, 7 Some Signs of Life Decatur’s main street is beginning to show some signs of real life. No doubt most of the readers noticed that the entire front of the J. J. Newberry store has been torn out to make room for a new modem “seethrough” window, that will place the whole store on display. The south door will be removed, and the north door will separate the “see-through” area from a display window. The entire front will then be set off with a new tile front. Work on the front was started Monday by Andrew Schrock, Builder, and should be completed this week. Newberry’s isn’t the only sign of life on Second street, either. About two weeks ago Colchin’s store had an entire new front added. In fact, it is such an improvement, that several people have come inside to inquire if it was really Colchin’s, since the sign hadn’t been put back up right away! It really made a change. Several other stores are reported considering new store fronts this spring to attract more business and to make people feel more like shopping when they pass through Decatur’s main section. And of course the main street isn’t the only part of town with a new face— The service station at the corner of 13th and Nuttman is being completely rebuilt. Not only are many new houses going up, but many early summer house-painting jobs have already been contracted to prune up the living areas of Decatur. A new coat of paint and some fixing up can really spark a city. With the new school area moving east in Decatur, no doubt impetus will be given to building in that direction. Stratton Place already has more than 100 homes, and Anthony Wayne Meadows has another two dozen or so. No doubt within the next seven years Decatur will have greatly increased in size and population. It provides a fine location for those who* want to live in a city, but not in a large city; for those who want the advantages of city service without the disadvantage of large city problems and costs. * It is good news that Decatur’s new school system will be built without raising taxes, too, but by continuing the present building fund. This fund collects about SIOO,OOO a year, and made the local schoool free of bonded indebtedness, as was intended by our forefathers.

Portland Resident Freed Under Bond James Matchett, 41, of Portland, is free on S3OO bond issued in city epurt on a misdemeanor charge of using lewd and lascivious language in the hearing of a lady. Matchett is undergoing psychiatric examination, and if he submits to treatment voluntarily, the case wlil probably be left in city court; if not, it will be refiled in circuit court, and an information concerning him given to the judge. Matchett was arrested Saturday night in Jay county by Sheriff Roger Singleton following positive identification of the suspect by several people. Sheriff Singleton explained that someone had been calling women in Adams, Wells, and Jay counties, making lewd, suggestive remarks, for the past three months, and that cooperative action by all three counties, and cooperating witnesses and ladies, led to the arrest. The incident which led to the arrest was a telephone call Saturday noon from Coppess Corners to a Decatur lady who had been advised what to do, and was done with the full cooperation of the Citizens Telephone company. —
