Both of these sources produce heat in the near infrared region. We are all familiar with the heating effects of the sun, and we know that exposure to sunlight, even in cold weather, produces a warming effect. One of the most vivid examples is Sun Valley, Idaho, where in midwinter, beside an outdoor swimming pool screened from the wind, people lounge in comfort even on the coldest days. In a sense, an infrared lamp is simply a miniature version of the sun. Its heating characteristics are similar, but on a very much smaller scale. The infrared lamp converts electrical energy directly into infrared energy capable of producing a sensation of warmth. The energy travels through the atmosphere at the speed of light, with little appreciable loss. Today, two different types of lamps are available to home or store owners to warm semiexposed areas, such as store entrances, outdoor restaurants, ticket booths, players’ shelters for ball games, or even in homes, for bathrooms; localized work areas, or on the farm: dairy barns, milk houses, and brooder sheds. Yes, a store owner can now warm his customer while he is looking in his window, and attract him to see his merchandise, leading inevitably to his coming in the store to tell you how much he appreciates the warm spot on the sidewalk!

Dust Remover One fast and effective method of ridding the sewing machine or other household devices of dust and lint is to “blast” it out with a bicycle or football pump — or with the “reverse” end of your vacuum cleaner. Cleaning Mahogany A polish recommended especially for genuine bld mahogany is made from boiled linseed oil (cold), to which a little vinegar has been added. Rub the oil well into the wood with one cloth, wipe off the excess with another cloth, then polish with a third cloth.

No Mushrooms, But Nearly Bags Peacock
Is this the mushroom or peacock season, Gerald M. Vizard, county superintendent of schools, wants to know. “Doc” Vizard thought it was mushroom season, so, putting on his spring tie, the one with mushrooms on it, he headed for the woods Sunday afternoon several miles west of Decatur. “Doc” tramped the woods all afternoon, but found no mushroom afternoon, but found no mushrooms. Loking up, he saw a large bird moving in the brush. As he approached it, imagine his surprise when he was confronted by a huge, full-grown male peacock, in full feather, walking contentedly through the woods. Now, no definite peacock season has been established in Adams county, since the semi-tropical bird usually isn’t available to hunters. In fact, the bird was so tame,
“Doc” was sure it must be a pet. So he approached it. He got just close enough to grab a handful of the beautiful tail feathers. It was then that “Doc” discovered that the peacock wasn’t quite tame, as the big, turkeysize bird, with six-foot tail feathers, squawked and jumped, rushed, and dashed, until he shook loose. “Doc” counted 23 tail feathers left in his hand. Peacock feather-picking just isn’t as tame an afternoon sport as mushroom picking, “Doc” decided, after that affair. But there was a happy ending to the story. The bird had escaped from Carl and Vic Braun, and was quite valuable to them. They had been searching for it over the weekend, after allowing it to roam around their farm at will. It was supposed to stay around, but apparently was lonesome for other peacocks, perhaps on the farm where it was born. Anyway, the Brauns got their peacock back, a sadder but wiser bird. “Doc” is still wondering if a veterinarian was necessary to take care of the painful tail-feather area when the bird returned! Showers Headed For State For Weekend By United Press International A series of showers and thundershowers was heading for Hoosierland today for a typical April weekend. Precipitation was expected in most areas at lease through Sun- j day, with a possibility that it will lift to make room for fair to partly cloudy conditions and cooler on Monday. John L.
