Color Will Change The Shape Os Rooms
Few of us can have a 20 x 30 living room, but by using paint color correctly we can make a small room look much larger than it is, bring interest to a square room, widen a long, narrow room, raise or lower a ceiling. Here are some suggestions on how to use color dynamically prepared by the National Paint, Varnish and Lacquer Association. Warm and Cool Colors are often classified as being warm or cool. Red, orange, yellow and yellow-green are warm colors; they seem to advance toward you. Objects painted in these colors will seem smaller because of this apparent advance. Blues, violets, blue-greens and blue-grays are the cool colors. Because they seem to retreat from

you, objects painted in these colors will seem larger. Site From Color But colors have another property, too, that of lightness or darkness. Adding white to a color makes it lighter, and it is called a tint. Light colors reflect more light and make objects seem farther away. Thus, a room painted in light colors will seem larger than one painted in dark colors. Colors are made darker by adding black, thus creating a shade. Dark colors make objects seem smaller and heavier and make things seem closer. Thus, an overly large room can be made to seem more intimate by paintfrig it in dark colors. With these few principles in
mind, let’s see how interior proportions can be improved by the use of paint styling: If a room seems too small, the walls and woodwork should be painted in light, cool colors. The pale colors make the walls visually recede and create the illusion of a larger room. Similarly, a low ceiling can be made to look higher if it is painted white or in a very light tint. If Too Large If a room seems too large, paint it in a dark or warm color to make it more inviting and smaller. The bold warm colors will transform a barnlike living room into a pleasant place to spend your time or entertain friends. If your ceiling is overly high, a dark or warm color will lower it. Some rooms are long and nar-row-bowling alley rooms, someone has called them. This fault can be corrected by using both dark and light colors, or warm and cool colors. Paint the narrow ends in a dark or warm color and the long walls in light or cool colors. Magically, the dark walls will seem to approach, the side walls to recede. The room will take on a better appearance. Vary Sides A perfectly square room can be a dull room. Make it more interesting by painting one of the walls in a bright, warm color. This wall will be the focus of attention. It can be the fireplace wall or one with an interesting alcove. Since a wall painted in a different color from the others will draw attention, use this technique to emphasize or highlight a treasured antique or family heirloom, or even your latest major furniture purchase. It will be more noticeable against the wall of a different color. Many rooms have unfortunate details in their construction: radiators, pipes, protrusions of one sort or another. These can be made less noticeable by painting them the same color as the walls. They will seem to fade into it. Incidentally, do not paint radiators with metallic paint. Not only does silver or gold call attention to them, the metallic paint also holds back some of the heat. Color Harmony Where rooms open Into each other, they will look more attractive if there is color harmony between them. For example, the wall color of one room can be repeated as a tint on the ceiling of

the adjoining room. Or a room painted in red can open onto one painted in a tint or shade of green, which is the complement of red and goes well with it. Remember, that when woodwork is painted in a color different from the walls, the over-all view is chopped up and the room looks smaller than it is. Reserve different colored woodwork for large rooms or where the wood is beautifully carved. frfr- ——• Be sure, however, that you use only quality paint. Only quality paint has lasting hiding power, retains its color brilliance, and is wear and weather resistant. To be sure that you are getting a quality product, ask a friend or neighbor who has had a satisfactory pannt job, which brand he used or consult your established, reputable paint dealer. Quality paints are available in a multitude of colors. The superior raw materials used to make quality paints are your assurance that the colors will retain their fieshness through a long period of wear. The cost of repainting an average room with quality paint is approximately ten dollars. Do’s and Don’ts The color you paint a room can ‘’make or break” the furnishings. It’s important to know which colors are best to use where so that you can spotlight the beautiful and hide the unattractive. Ten dollars worth of quality paint will redo the average size room; take full advantage of this beauty bargain by putting color to work. The Do’s Do paint a small room a light color to make it look larger. DO use deep colors in hangarlike rooms to give more warmth and intimacy. DO accentuate the blues, bluegreens and blue-grays in rooms with southern exposures for a

cooling effect. DO stress the warm reds, yellows, golds and oranges in rooms with northern exposures. DO mix both warm and cool colors in each room. DO paint your ceiling in color — it adds so much to the room. If you wan to make the ceiling seem higher, paint it a much lighter color than the walls- To lower a very high ceiling, paint it a deeper color than the walls. DO study color samples and paint chips in both daylight and artificial light. Artificial light often changes the appearance of a color. DO use “complexion happy” colors in the bathroom for more complimentary and healthy looking reflections in your mirrors. Pinks, peaches, rose and pinkylilac are the kindest. Gold and pure green are also good, but avoid yellowy greens which can make one look ill. Do mix both light and dark hues in each room. DO buy only quality paints to be sure of achieving superior finishes which are long-lasting and non-fading, as well as easy to apply. The Don’ts DON’T use colors in equal proportion in any one room. If you’re stressing a light warm color — yellow, for example — your accent splashes include cooler and deeper hues, for instance, to offset the yellow, you might select a rich turquoise, bright coral and dark olive. Use the reverse procedure when you’re painting walls a deep cool color. DON’T use very bright colors on large areas. You’ll detract from your furnishings. DON’T select colors just because they’re the current rage or because they are neutral and “will go with everything.” Choose the most flattering colors for the size
of the room and the ype of furnishings in it. It’s far more practical to ge a new slipcover for your chair to go with the new walls, than to paint the walls a dull hue that doesn’t clash with the chair in question, nor compliment anything else in the room. DON’T overdo patterns in a room. Too many patterns or too “busy’’ designs give a cluttered look, particularly in smaller rooms. DON’T be afraid to paint the furniture you've had for years just because it’s a sentimental keepsake or you think painting it will “harm it in some way.” Unless it’s an antique, all your older pieces should be beautifully painted or enameled to give them new beauty and new distinction. You should see what happens to a dark mahogany dining set when it’s coated with shining white enamel! Try itDON’T use gloss paints on ceilings or walls, except in the kitchen and bath. These two rooms need surfaces which are easily scrubbed and more resistant to moisture. Flat paints are the better choice for walls and ceilings because they reflect light evenly, without glaire. DON’T forget that the color will look darker on your wall than it looks on the color chip. Color always looks “more so” on large areas than small areas. DON’T overemphasize the warm yellows, oranges and reds in the kitchen withuot relieving the effect with a splash of coolness. . . blues, blue-greens and blue-greys. The cool blues are nice to have around the kitchen when you’re roasting and toasting.

Painting Ceilings Paint a ceiling without a ladder? you can do it with a longhandled roller while standing on the floor if you are going to paint the walls later—as most people do. First thing to do, of course, is to select the type of quality paint you’ll use. Flat paints are preferred for ceilings in all rooms except kitchens and baths where semi-gloss enamel is recommended because of its greater resistance to moisture vapor and steam. The reason for using flat paint elsewhere is that it reflects light without glare. Celing Color Next comes color. Many people paint their ceilings white for the greatest refletcion of light and because white will mak a ceiling look higher. But there’s no law that compels you to. A lighter tint of the wall colors can be used or you can paint the ceiling of one room in a tint of the wall color of the adjoining room to create a continuous color scheme that will tie two or more rooms together. Where ceilings are high, you can reverse the above advice and paint them in darker tones to lower them visually. If you do the entire Job with a roller, here are a few things to bear in mind. Roll the first stroke away from you. Don’t roll too fast or you'll spatter the paint. Slow down as you reach the wall; smashing into the Siwall with the roller will shower paint all over. Ease into the junction of wall and ceiling so as to get as little paint as possible on the wall. Os course, the job will be a bit

neater if you use a ladder or a firm plank held by two ladders to roll or brush on the paint near the wall, protecting it with a metal strip known as a painter’s time saver, shirt carboards; or you can use special rollers that are made so that no paint can land on a surface at right angles to the one you’re working on. Latex Paint If you are using a latex paint which doesn’t show lap marks, paint a narrow strip around the entire perimeter of the ceiling. You’ll fill in the center area later with your roller. If you are using an alkyd paint, its best to work across the narrow dimension of the ceiling. Start in a corner and paint a narrow strip two or three feet wide against the wall. After loading your roller, roll on a strip of the same width working from an unpainted area into the still-wet wallside strip. When you get to the far side of the room paint the area near the wall with brush or roller and paint guard. As you roll along, work backward into the wet edge of the previous trip. Criss-cross your strokes to cover the area completely. A word about painting kitchen and bathroom ceilings. Likely as not, they’ll be covered with a coating of cooking grease and soap film carried there by steam from stove or shower. It’s a good idea to wash the surface before painting, because the oily film will interfere with the adhesion of the new paint. If the old enamel is still shiny, degloss it with steel wool for the same reason.
