Many Tourists Fail To See 'Cultures' By DICK WEST United Press Internationsl WASHINGTON <UPI) - I believe it was Aristotle who said that American tourists go abroad mainly to look at other American tourists. Or maybe it was Cassius Clay. At any rate, this jibe at our provincialism has a certain amount of validity. Many American tourists do fail to take full advantage of the cultural opportunities in the lands they visit. But, having just returned from a trip to Venezuela, I am prepared to testify that there is another side to the coin. "Getting away from it all” is not as simple as it looks in the travel folders. The first Venezuelan I met was a hotel barber who told me that anti-American sentiment was so strong he was afraid to drive around in his Cadillac. It turned out he was born in New York. I might never have experienced any of the “true flavor” of the country had I not been fortunate enough to have as one of my traveling companions a veteran grlobetrotter named Myron Glaser. Glaser, who writes a travel column for the Washington Daily News, steered me to the environs at Caracas- where we discovered an original native art form. It was an ancient stone wall covered with fragmentary inscriptions and abstract designs. At first, we thought it might be the handiwork of Indian aborigines who once inhabited the area. But a local art critic, who doubles as a taxi driver, told us its origin was political rather than cultural. Here is how the mural was created: A pro-Communist passed by with a paint brush and, noting the wall was barren of slogans, painted “Yankee go home” upon the stones. Then an anti-Communist came by, smeared fresh paint over the epithet and scrawled “communism stinks ” He was followed by a neutralist sign-painter, and so it went until the wall had become a masterpiece of impressionistic art. In my opinion, this technique is far superior to the so-called “donkey tall” school of painting and I hope it catches on in other parts of the world. A few days later, Glaser and I organized a small expedition in the town of Macuto, our aim being to inspect the dwellings of the native Andeans who live on the mountainside. Stumbling over rocks and rills, and an occasional templed hill, we made our way from ridge to ridge, pressing ever onward and upward. But we could find no sign of habitation. Finally, we came to a pathway and in the distance heard the ♦inkling of a bell. Striking out in that direction, we broke through to a clearing and were almost run down by an ice cream wagon. It was a trimphant moment and Glaser expressed it well. “The sun never sets on a ‘good humor’ man,” he said. — I^l NO MORE HUFFING— Forest fire lookout has it made on a tree farm near Molalla, Ore.
