Is it actually necessary that self-employed farmers check their social security accounts periodically? A. It is not a matter of necessity that self-employed farmers or anyone else, periodically check their social security account. It is, rather, a matter of practical good sense. In the millions of returns that must be processed to record the earnings to more than 9 out of 10 people in the entire country, there is always a possibility that one can be lost it might be yours. There is a limit to the'period within which certain corrections in your record can be made. You wouldn’t go very long without checking your bank account — it is equally a good idea to check your social security account. Q. My son works at a foundry and his employer reported his wages for social security. Every few years he gets a statement of his social security account to be sure it is correct. Can I, a selfemployed farmer, get a statement of my account? A. Anyone who has a social security account can request a statement of his account either by letter or -by using the ‘postcard for this purpose that is available at your local social security office. Your earnings, whether they are wages or self-employment, should be posted to your account, if they were correctly reported. You might be interested in getting our leaflet OASI-852, Self-Employed Farmers — Are You Getting the Social Security Credit Due You?” Q. I am a self-employed farmer; how do I get social seurity credits and how many do I need? A. You get social security credits be reporting your ferm net inNOTICE My office will be closed APRIL 22 - MAY 6 Dr. Ray Stingely

come. You do this at the same time that you report your income tax to the director of internal revenue for your district. How much credit you need to qualify for benefits is determined by your age. We have prepared a new leaflet that deals specifically with these questions — get it at your local social security office. Ask for No. 855. Q. How can I be sure all of my earnings as a self-employed farmer have been posted to my social security account? A. You can request a statement of your account either by letter of by using the postcard you get from your local social security office. They also have a leaflet you may find helpful; ask for OASI-855. It is wise to check your account about each three years because there is a time limit after which changes cannot be made in your record. Q. I have a long time to go before I’U be old enough to get old-age social security benefits, but I’m thinking about changing my farm operation. What are the different ways to qualify farm self-employment income for social security? A. (1) Operate your farm yourself and have at least S4OO net profit by actual net or the optional net method. (2) Hire the work done by employees (still have to have the S4OO net). (3) Rent the land to a tenant on a crop or livestock share basis and take a very active part in the \ management and operation of the farm. (Still need S4OO net for your share. Q. I am 65, but I have been turned down by social security becurity. Can I still earn this credcause I did not have enough credit for work covered by social sett and become entitled to benefits at a later time? A. Yes, you can earn social security credit by continuing to work. When you have enough social security credit, you should apply again. A man who reached age 65 in 1962, needs credit for 2-3/4 years of work under social security. Q. A friend of mine who had two minor children died recently, but when her husband tried to get benefits for the children his application was not approved. Why weren’t benefits payable for the children? A. Very probably this claim was not allowed because the mother was not currently insured. For benefits to be paid to the children on their mother’s earnings record, she would have to have social security jredit for work under social security, .in I*4 out of the 3, years just before her death.
