International League Opens Card Tonight The “new” International League opens its 80th season tonight with 10 franchises, seven new managers and plenty of cheery thoughts aboit 1963. “Our league is now in perfect condition,” beamed President Tommy Richardson. "I'm convinced we’ll 'give our fans a »'• stronger and faster brand of baseball this year.” The International League added Indianapolis and Little Rock as new franchises this season following the disbanding of the American Association last December. Majors Promise Aid As a result, the IL sprawls from Buffalo, N.Y., to Jacksonville. Fla., and from Little Rock to Richmond, Va. The major leagues agreed last winter to help defray the increased travel costs brought on by expansion. Play begins Tuesday night with the following schedule: Columbus at Richmond; Toronto at Jacksonville; Syracuse at Atlanta; Rochester at Little Rock, and Buffalo at Indianapolis. In secondary openers on Thursday, Indianapolis is at Columbus; Richmond at Buffalo; Syracuse at Little Rock and Rochester at Jacksonville. Toronto does not open at home until April 24, against Jacksonville. With the new franchises and solid working agreements with major league clubs for each IL member, Richardson feels the league’s attendance could hit 2-million this season. Last year with eight clubs the IL drew about 1,450.000 fans. Kerby Farrell of the Buffalo Bisons. Larry Shepard of the Columbus Jets and Ben Geraghty of the pennant-winning Jacksonville Suns are the only holdover managers in the league. New men on the jobs are: Darrell Johnson at Rochester; Harry Walker at Atlanta; Bob Swift at Syracuse; Rollie Hemsley at Indianapolis; Bill Adair at Toronto; Preston Gomez at Richmond and Frank Lucchesi at Little Rock. The league is divided into Northern and Southern divisions with each club listed to play a 152-game' schedule. Buffalo, Rochester, Toronto, Syracuse and Richmond comprise the Northern Division and Jacksonville, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Little Rock and Columbus the Southern half. Butts' Libel Suit Set For August 5 ATLANTA (UPI) — A federal court judge has set Aug. 5 as the trial date for a $lO million libel suit against the Saturday Evening Post filed by former Georgia Athletic Director Wallace Butts. Judge Lewis R. Morgan estimated it would take about two weeks to hear the case which stems from a March 23 story in the Post alleging that Butts and Alabama Coach Paul Bryant rigged a football game between the schools last fall. Butts is asking for $5 million in general damages, stating that his career as a football coach was ruined because of the story, and another $5 million in punitive damages to discourage the Curtis Publishing Co. from similar future actions. Butts and Bryant have denied the allegations in the Post story. Bryant has a $5 million libel action against the magazine. The publishing company filed an answer to Butts’ suit last week stating that the Post story was true. The Post alleged that Butts and Bryant rigged the game during a telephone conversation last September. Alabama, a -17-point favorite, won 35-0. Georgia Air Guard Leader Kills Self ATLANTA (UPI) — Brig. Gen. Bernard M. Davey, commander of the Georgia Air National Guard, killed himself Monday night after wounding his wife during a quarrel over making out their income tax return, police said today. An investigation was under way to determine if Davey accidentally shot himself to death or was a suicide. Mrs -zavey tola police ner husband came home about 10 p.m. and became angry when he found out she had not completed theftfederal income tax return prior to the midnight filing deadline. She said Davey went - into the bedroom and returned with a .25 caliber automatic pistol. Mrs. Davey, 45, said she saw a “two-inch blue flame” spurt from the pistol and felt the bullet strike her hip. Davey, 47, was found lying on his back in his bedroom, a bullet wound in the chest.
Colorful Field Is Entered In 500-Mile Race INDIANAPOLIS (UPI)-An international field and the biggest challenge to the supremacy of the four-cylinder roadsters was set today for 500-mile Speedway race time trialsWhen the Speedway closed shop late Monday, 64 racers were assured for the 47th annual Memorial .Day race, but only the 33 fastest in qualifications will line up for the flying start May 30. Officials expected another “10 or 11” entries, with those postmarked before midnight Monday being accepted. The 2*4-mile track is closed for repairs until practice opens May 1. Time trials will be held May 18-19 and 25-26. The most colorful field in the postwar era was sprinkled with an international flavor that includes world road racing champion Graham Hill of England and Mexico’s debonair Pedro Rodriguez. Although the conventional roadsters, first made famous by the late Lou Moore and his “500" winners Mauri Rose and Bill Holland, still dominated the field, they no longer had a monopoly. They were expected to be challenged seriously by most of the 13 8-cylinder machines—five of them rear-engine creations by Westcoast speedster Mickey Thompson —and two 6-cylinder racers. Last year, 62 of the 72 entries were powered by conventional 4-cylinder Offenhauser engines—basically the same power plant Which has won every Memorial Day race since 1947. Starting with 1949, only three machines with other engines finished in the top 10—Paul Russo and Bill Cheesbourg in the powerful, 8-cylinder Novis in 1957 and 1958 and Australia’s Jack Brabham in a rear-engine 4-cylinder English Cooker-Climax in 1961. •But the seriousness’ of the challenge tq the “Offys” became apparent last month when California’s Dan Gurney, another road racing veteran, hit an unofficial 150.5 miles' per hour on a rough Speedway oval in a British Lotus powered by an 8-cylinder Ford engine. In view of the early burst of speed, railbirds freely predicted that last year’s qualification records by Parnelli Jones, the first speed merchant to crash the 150 mph barrier, will be shattered with ease. - Other foreigners in the field so far were Jimmy Clark of Scotland and Ed Kostenuk of Canada. Elmer George, Indianapolis, son-in-law of Speedway owner Tony Hulman, was nominated late Monday for a car owned by his wife, Mrs. Mari Hulman George. The other entry came from Ernie Ruiz, Modesto, Calif., with no driver assigned. Three other driver assignments were announced late Monday. Veteran Bill Cheesbourg, Tucson, Ariz., and Grand Prix star Masten Gregory, Kansas City and Paris, will drive for Thompson. Bobby Uns er, Albuquerque, N.M-, winner of the Pike’s Peak Hill Climb the past five years, will drive one of three cars entered by John Chalik, LaPorte, Ind. Defending champion Rodger Ward heads the field. Other former “500” winners are Jim Rathmann, A .J.Foyt and Troy Ruttman. Every driver in the first 10 last year with the exception of Don Davis was entered. Davis, fourth last year, was killed in a sprint race at New Bremen, Ohio, last August. Also missing was Shorty Templeman, 11th last year, who lost his life in a midget race at Marion, Ohio, also last August. Decatur Jaycees To Meet This Evening A general membership meeting of the Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce will be held above the First State Bank at 7:15 o’clock tonight. o, All Jaycees are urged to attend as the recent membership drive will be discussed.

WeebEwbank New Boss Os New York Jess NEW YORK (UPI) — Bustling Weeb Ewbank, new boss of the New York Jets (nee Titans), today began a search for another Johnny Unitas to help him beat the five-year championship timetable he once wrote for the Baltimore Colts. The odds are strictly against Ewbank, of course, but he feels that with a few “sleepers” like Unitas, he can “start a new era in the American Football League.” , And who can blame Weeb for hoping? The 55-year-old Ewbank, dismissed by the Colts at the close of the last National Football League season, Monday signed a three-year contract calling for an estimated SIOO,OOO to serve as coach, general manager and vice president of New York’s AFL entry. Change Nickname At the same time, Dave (Sonny) Werblin, new president of the club, announced that the nickname would be changed to Jets, rhyming with Mets. The Mets and Jets jointly will occupy the new stadium now under construction on Long Island. Ewbanx readily admitted that the Jets’ biggest problem is players. The old regime headed by tempestous Harry Wismer did not sign a single member of last season’s college crop. “But this club is not any worse than the Colts when I took them over (in 1954),” Ewbank insisted. “Talk about a challenge. Well, this is no tougher than a lot of others I’ve faced. Saw Sicker Cows 'T’ve seen sicker cows than this one get well,” he gagged in an allusion to his Hoosier farmboy upbringing. The pudgy Ewbank said that in his efforts to rebuild the Jets, for this year at least he would have to rely heavily on free agents, rejects from other pro clubs, fugitives from Canadian football and other sleeper-type players. “Johnny Unitas was a free agent, you know,” he reminded his listeners. Unitas was playing sandlot football for $6 a game in Pittsburgh when Ewbank signed him. With Unitas at quarterback, the Colts won the NFL championship in 1958 and 1959. Maye Homers In Ninth To Defeat Mels By TIM MORIARTY UPI Sports Writer Tracy Stallard will always be remembered as the pitcher who served home run No. 61 to Roger Maris in 1961. The 6-foot-7 Virginian, though, may find it harder to forget the gopher ball he tossed to Lee Maye of the Milwaukee Braves Monday. Stallard was only one strike away from nailing down the New York Mets’ first victory of the year when Maye lined a two-run homer over the right field fence at Milwaukee to give the Braves a 4-3 triumph in Monday’s only major league game. It was the sixth straight defeat for the Mets, who didn’t gain their first victory last season-un-til their 10th game. Stallard was so stunned that he sat silently—and alone — in the dugout for five minutes after the game ended before finally joining his mates in the clubhouse. Deserved Better Fate The former Red Sox right-hand-er deserved a better fate. He had relieved starter Al Jackson in the seventh and was set up for the win when rookie Ed Kranepool scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth to give the Mets a 3-2 lead. Stallard fanned two in the eighth and fired called third strikes past dangerous Eddie Mathews and Joe Torre in the ninth. Pinch swinger Mack Jones then collected the first hit off the lanky reliever, a single to center. That set the stage for Maye's winning blast. Maye, hitless in three previqus at-bats this season, unloaded his homer on a l-and-2 pitch that Stallard aimed at the Milwaukee outfielder’s fists. However, he made it too good and as Maye trotted the bases, Stallard trudged off the field, as though in shockThe Braves thus completed the first seven days of the campaign
