(UPD— Sponsors expressed high optimism today as a result of public interest shown in a meeting here Monday to discuss the feasibility of making the Wabash River navigable to towboats and barges. Nearly 1,500 persons crowded an auditorium at Indiana State College for the meeting arranged by Sens. Vance Hartke and Birch E. Bayh Jr., and the Wabash Valley Association. The enthusiastic participation by many of the visitors was cited by leaders in the movement as proof that the drive to make the stream an inland waterway at least from Terre Haute to the junction with the Ohio River will be successful. , Hartke and Bayh explained that | the U S. Corps of Engineers would be unlikely to recommend such a project as feasible without full community support. ' “I am confident," said Wilfred Shaw, president ofx the Clark County, IH-, chapter of the WVA, “that the Army engineers will find it feasible to prepare the Wabash for navigation.” Besides Hartke and Bayh, the only congressman attending was Rep. Winfield K. Denton, Bth District. But letters of support were read from Reps. William Gr-> Bray, 7th, and Richard Roudebush, 6th. Neither Governor Welsh nor Gov, Otto Kerner of Illinois was able to attend. However, Welsh was represented by State Conservation Director Donald Foltz and Kerner by William G. Ackerman of the University of Illinois faculty. Among the speakers was Louis Austin, international representative for District 11 of the United Mine Workers. Austin said "coai needs cheap transportation to meet competition of other fuels.” Mayor Russell Lynch of Grayville, 111., said “we need the Wabash dug out so we can navigate it and use the drawbridges and locks which we still have and which formerly were in use.” Statements made at the meeting indicated that the hopes of some of. the interested persons extend beyond the Wabash itself. Walter E. Linton of Petersburg said he was interested in the Wabash tributaries. Linton said the White River might be made navigable as far north as Bedford to provide for barge shipment of stone products from the Law-rence-Monroe County limestone industry. BL, ■'■JW’l fcSfia- wit. «- fl i It OFF THE BEATEN PATH! A truck traveling to Geneva left the road along U. S. 224 east of Decatur Monday afternoon. There were no injuries to the driver and, ho visible damage to the truck, although later developments almost caused disaster. A tongue used to hold the wheels in place had been damaged, and broke while the truck was stopped at Second and Monroe streets a short time later, nearly causing the tanker, which was carrying 75,000 gallons of high octane gasoline, to upset.—(Photo by Mac-Lean)
