Annual D-Club Banquet Held Last Evening I Jim Martin and Tom were named co-most valuable basketball players and Mark Corral the outstanding wrestler, announced by the Decatur high school Booster club at the annual D-club banquet Friday evening. Dutch Struck, athletic director at Hanover College, kept the huge crowd of athletic boosters “in stitches,” while presenting his main main address on the three things that make up a champion. Booster club president James Cow ens made the presentations of the dub’s annual awards. Martin, slick guard for coach Bill McColly’s five during the pa s t season, received his award as coMVP, and for the assists leader. Maddox, the team’s top scorer and rebounder during the season, was awarded the trophy for coMVP and top rebounder,--Most surprised athlete of the entire group was Mark Corral, who was the receipent of the club’s first “outsanding wrestler” award. Unbeaten Record Weighing less than 100 pounds, Corral was not only the top grappler on coach Gary Giessier’s squad through the season, but one of the top wrestlers in the state, as he was one of a very small number to post an unbeaten record. Corral won 13 matches without a loss. Rev. Elbert A. Smith, Jr., pastor of the First Presbyterian church, gave the invocation, and a 15-piece orchestra, under the direction of Richard Collins, provided dinner music. Following the meal,- several selections were sung by a boys’ quartet and a girls double-trio, under the direction of Miss Helen Haubold. The quartet consisted of Tom Baxter, Zane Zwick, John Bedwell and Bob Andrews. The double-trio was composed of Missy Mayclin, Candy Johnsen, Kathy Hill, Karen Grice, Sharon Harding and Katie Smith. Worthman Emcee Athletic director Bob Worthman emceed the affair, doing his usual fine job, with a few "jabs” at the superintendent, principal, etc. D-Club president Martin welcomed all who attended. and thanked the Booster club for its loyal support, before awarding an honorary “D” to club president Cowens. Martin also presented checks of $35 each to Miss Haubold and Collins for the school’s choir robe and band uniform funds, respectively. The D-Club had raised the money through sponsoring a dance. Each of the coaches in the school’s athletic department introduced his lettermen and squads. McColly introduced the crosscountry, baseball and basketball teams: Worthman the track and football teams: Giessler his wrestling team; Harry Daily his golf squad and Charles Able his rifle team. Worthman also introduced the members of the school board, prinicipal Hugh J. Andrews, superintendent Gail M. Grabill, and assistant football coach Wally Yeoman. After making the presentations of the awards, Cowens gave a brief background on the Booster club and some of its projects, including donating a movie camera to the school last fall. Making A Champ A coach for 26 years before becoming Hanover athletic director, Struck left a challenge to everyone in attendance. “There isn’t one person here good enough to be a citizen of this country, unless he or she does the very best he can in any undertaking,” he related. “Giving every bit of it and just a little more,” is the first sign of a~ champion, Struck explained, “and when, we fail to do thia we have failed our Creator.” The other two components of a champion, according to the welleducated and well-experienced native of Illinois, are "dedicating yourself to build rather than tear down," and “being a champion to yourself.” Ih explaining bis second point, he told everyone who has. ever been guilty of it to quit ing and “second guessing.” “You build by working together, ”, Struck said, “and cooperation is one of the greatest things on earth.”
