Sportswear Is Many Things
There’ve been times — in tne past, of course — when a mere man, looking at a new fashion for women, might say, either jestingly or seriously, “What is it?” This spring is the time when women, referring to a most important kind of fashion, might echo that question — in a happy tone, more approving than curious. What is it? It’s sportswear, an idea that has evolved from its original definition as one kind of fashion — clothing for active or spectator sports — into many kinds of fashion, all of them adding up to the symbol and substance of the well-dressed American look. Sportswear still means fashions for sports, as the growing popularity of new styles for boating and bowling attest. But it means much more. Sportswear means knits, an ever-expanding fashion that includes separates, casual dresses and suits in every kind of texture and material imaginable—wool knits, cotton knits, knits of manmade miracle fibers and blends. Newest and most exciting meaning of sportswear centers on fashions for patio, lounging, atThe long look comes to the fore, as tops of all sorts pair up with the long, long sktrt. Colors, fabrics, prints mix and mingle with imaginative abandon—a plaid wool top with a long, floating solid-color chiffon skirt, to cite just one example. Shorter dresses copy the muumuu and an array of easy, natural shapes. Pants are in the picture, athome and elsewhere. Slim, trim and tapered is classic now. For spring and especially for patio dazzle, there’s news in the widening influence of dashing bell-bot-toms and in modified harem styles. Sportswear means coordinates, for all hours and occasions. Mixtures of colors and fabrics continue to be the fashion trend. Skirts show new variations of ease — easy-slim, pleated, “yaya” influenced with hemline flares and flounces.
Tops take the brief approach to the casual life, to sunshine and fun. Midriffs are bared by fitted, flared and free-swinging versions of these little toppings. Tn a more dress-up mood are blouses and shirts appearing as sleeveless shells, middy looks and
STRIPES TAKE THE SPOTLIGHT IN MEN’S , SHIRTS FOR SPRING Stripes make major fashion news in men’s shirts for spring and summer. -Ranging from the big, broad, bold British stripes in deep shades of blue, gray, brown and red, the new shirts are also available in narrower stripes and pin stripes. Next news note is the “look of more collar.” A bit higher, a mite fuller in the cape and a little wider in the spread, these styles have a dressier look without sacrificing summer comfort. Add the popular tabs, buttondowns and moderate spread collar styles — plus the very low “vanishing band” styles — and your fashion range is complete. Any and all of those styles are made in short as well as long sleeves to meet the demands of all men for warm weather comfort. Sport shirts come up in an even wider array of fashion than usual this year. The “Nautical Look” so popular last year is due for a return engagement with no diminishing of its popularity in sight. The salty motif shows up in knits as well as cut-and-sewn shirts, and the styling is authetic enough to suit the most ardent sailor. Broad British stripes score in sport shirts as well as in dress shirts. In addition to the other colors, they include rich bright stripes in signal-flag hues. The “Western” or “Ranchwear” influence is evident in the design and fabrics of the sport shirts keyed to those worn by the real cowhands. Pointed pocket flaps, yoked fronts and backs, fancy buttons and fancy cuffs distinguish the Westerns. For those who prefer sleek sophisticated styling, there are updated Continental collared shirts with Italian-type design cueing their tailoring. Traditionalists, of course, will have a wide selection of button-down-models which will appear in all of the season’s most popular patterns and solid colors. SAILING IN Millinery this - spring reflects the nautical influence in fashion with a variety of sailor shapes, among them a “gob” hat meant to be perched toward the back of the head. JUMPERS FOR SPRING New jumper looks- for spring feature the wrap style and the I ya-ya, with lbw hip sash.
other relaxed pullovers, pretty looks highlighting ruffles and lace. The casual tuckin with roll-up sleeves maintains a strong position. Sportswear means sweaters, and so does spring, especially since cardigans are such popular pairings with sleeveless dresses not only now but well into summer, as travel companions and air conditioning protectors. And sportswear means interesting fabrics, rugged but refined —a country look come to town. Leading off are work denims and denim copies, linens and linen looks, madras.

Four Themes Prevail In Men's Sportswear
Sportswear for spring and -summer 1963 is keyed to four themes that should find high favor with most men. The “Nautical Look” is due for | its second big season in a row. It will be accompanied by I a growing “Western Ihfluence” | < Banchwear), by styles linked to I “Active Sportswear” and a new, dressier group ot “Weekendwear ” “The Nautical Look” encompasses hooded parkas and pullovers made of slicker cloths, duck, chambray and new laminated fabrics. Bell-bottom trousers, direct from the French Riviera, have made their move from naval vessels to outboard cruisers. These, of course, are in white duck. Look for crew-neck and boatneck knit shirts in bright signal-

flag colors, cut-and-sewn shirts, cabana sets and swim trunks—all in the saltier style expressions. “Ranchwear” — the Western Influence — plays up denim and chambray, those old standbys of the cowpokes. They also borrow the pointed pocket flaps, yoked shirts, contrasting color stitching and rivets that stem from frontier shirts and western “jeans.” Calico prints and big gingham checks are other distinctive features of the Western Influence. “Active Sportswear” for golf, tennis, fishing and other sports has contributed features in both style and construction to many other leisure garments. “Weekendwear.” the last but not least of the new trends, lends itself very smartly to the newly emphasized coordinates.
