For the first time in the history of the world, an organized and co-ordinated world-wide effort is in progress to wipe hunger from the face of the earth. At the bequest of President Kennedy the American Freedom from Hunger Foundation accepted citizen leadership of the campaign in the United States, working in cooperation with the international program of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The Foundation is enlisting the assistance of all interested private agencies. Recognizing hunger as mankind’s deadliest foe, even more destructive than the wars and pestilence, which it breeds, provokes and aggravates, the Foundation warns that the greatest potential threat to peace today resides in the fact that more than half of the peoples of the earth are currently ill-fed or underfed. Public consciousness must be awakened to the problems of hunger and Public conscience evoked to assist in their solutions. The first major American public event, designed to focus world attention on these objectives will be Freedom From Hunger Week proclaimed by the President for March 17-23. The high light of the week was a dinner on March 21, attended by Ambassadors of the 104 member-nations of FAO, government officials, members of Congress and American leaders of representative non-governmental organizations. Similar dinners were held on the same evening by religious and citizens’ organizations throughout the country. More than 100 other countries will observe Freedom From Hunger Week in the same manner.
