Says Children In Need Os Discipline By GAY PAULEY EPI Women’* Editor N®W YORK (UPI) - At the age of 76, says Mrs. Kemper Campbell, a woman has a right to speak her mind. Mrs. Campbell, a prominent Los Angeles lawyer who retired to run a ranch, exercises the right on a variety of matters ranging from Juvenile delinquency to joint bank accounts of married couples. Mrs. Campbell was a lawyer for 40 years, practicing with her husband most of those years. He died in 1957. She was the first woman deputy district attorney of Los Angeles County, served as legal counsel for the Los Angeles Planned Parenthood Association, and taught medical jurisprudence for 30 years. Now she operates a 1,400-acre ranch at Victorville, Calif., 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The ranch, which the Campbells have owned sincp 1924, produces dairy and beef cattle, Arabian horses, and sugar beet seed. On it also are the homes of her married son who is a Victorville attorney, a daughter married to a businessman, and five Camp, bell grandchildren. One son was killed in World War 11. Mrs. Campbell has set forth many of her observations in her first published work, called “Here I Raise Mine Ebenezer” (Simon and Schuster), taking its title from a familiar hymn. Laden with Opinion Her conversation also is laden with opinion. “At 76,” she said, “why shouldn’t one be outspoken?” “I think this modern saying that ‘There are no delinquent children, only delinquent parents* is foolishness,” she said. "I’ve known parents who would, and did, do everything for the good of the child. Yet the child went wrong. “I think some children are just born to be bad. I know, all the sociologists will disagree violently, but some of them haven’t had as much experience with delinquents as I've had.” (Mrs. Campbell served in the juvenile department of the district attorney’s office.) “I’m talking about the incurably violent children...the sadistic, vicious ones. I just don't think there is much help for them." "I am NOT talking about the mischievous youngsters. To these I used to say when they came before me, ‘I may be proud to know you when you are Si, but in the meantime you are wasting several years of your and your parents’ lives.” “To diem, the message usually got through,” she said. Children Need Discipline “My son and daughter are not afraid of their children...of giving them complexes,” she said, during a visit to New York. “I don’t believe in children growing up without discipline and direction. Children need and want both. We don’t have to have our own way always to be happy.” During our conversation, her opinions ranged to the subjects of religion and marriage. On religion (she is a Seventh Day Adventist)—“Religion is nothing but a farce unless it is personal...unless you practice it because you feel it’s the right thing for you personally. I believe heartily in worshiping a merciful i God, otherwise I don’t want to go to heaven.” On marriage—" Occupy the same bed as long as you are com. fortable, the same room as long as you are happy, but never, never the same bank account.” “I don’t believe in joint accounts,” she said. “The happiest marriages I’ve noticed are the ones where there was no conflict about money. Even if the wife does not hold an outside job, she should still have a stated income and an opportunity to save money. “I've known divorces where the ultimate grounds were something else, but it was a husband's tight rein on finances which marked the beginning of the end.” I Household Scrapbook I ~ .. Limed-Oak Finish You can create a smart and attractive limed-oak furniture finish by stirring one pound of unslacked lime into two quarts of water. Rub this across the grain of the wood, and wipe when party dry (to prevent accumulation of excess lime), seal with two coats of thin white shellac, and finish with a thin coat of paraffin wax. Fuse Identification You can locate blown fuses quickly in total darkness if you first treat the fuses with a stripe of luminous paint. Apply the paint - to the edge of the mica or glass window hole and when the fuse is blown, the light emitted as the fuse blows will automatically activate the luminous paint, letting you locate the source of trouble immediately. Drain Protector When arranging flowers in your kitchen sink, leaves or wood can be kept from washing down the drain by plugging the drain with steel wool—this permitting the moisture to go through, but stopping the debris. This is a good idea, too, when peeling vegetables.
