Air of Natural Elegance Vii fl llw IRaaBR I M I MM- ; p 1 '3l I s JHMi^HHB^" 'a v-! . ..- ■ /.JS" i An ingenious filigree-encased TV-stereo center creates the local point for activity in this contemporary living room. The simple lines of the furnishings and the serene elegance of the filigree are combined with the natural texture of wood-plank walls and a par* quet floor. The distinctive black marble in the tops of the hour-glass-base end table and the coffee table is repeated in the dining room table, which is set apart from the living room by a I’anelaire divider in a contemporary oriental filigree. The oriental pattern is used again in the window treatment and the lower sliding doors of the practical built-in, with filigree in a complementing granada style in the upper doors. The sheer curtains and soft carpeting carry out the theme of natural elegance.

There are both free-standing models and built-ins, one-piece units and two-piece ensembles. The four basic styles of 1963 electric ranges are: 1. Is your family always looking for things? If the time spent by families searching for misSing articles could be computinto millions of hours each ed, it would undoubtedly run year Which in many a home, points up the importance of somewhere, somehow developing additional storage facilities, to the end that there shall be ‘‘a place for everything, and every thing in its place.” One of the most versatile and adaptable forms of storage unit is the storage wall. This type of storage, which would be . eually at home in any room in the house, may be either straight storage or a combination storage and activity center (known as a “living wall”). The key to successful storage walls, be they “living walls” or straight storage, lie in careful planning and assessment o f individual needs plus correct choice of construction material. If solid lumber is used for a storage wall, the wall can be effectively integrated with the rest of the room — particularly if the room is paneled with matching lumber. As for the where and what of storage walls, straight storage is most commonly incorporated in kitchens, bedrooms (or dressing rooms) and bathrooms; “living walls” are best adapted to family and living rooms. The beauty of the straight storage wall is the fact that it assures that all the items to be stored are consolidated, keeps the articles within easy reach out of sight, and it obviates the necessity for a full complement of bulky furniture. Although the straight storage wall is usually built along one wall in a room it may also serve as a room divider, perhaps separating sleeping from dressing area or creating separate activity areas in a child’s room. Combination, or living, walls are limited only by family interests and imagination. The activity wall is self-ex-planatory. It might be dedicated to a hobby or series of hobbies such as tropical fish aquariums,

If r OUTDOOR storage is provided in this combination workshop, potting corner built at rear of carport, the storage or paraphernalia for painting or flower arranging, for photographic equipment or might #ren include a built-in sewing machine. i On the other hand, the activity wall might be, in essence, an entertainment wall which would include built-in stereo and hi-fi equipment, television, a movie screen, etc. Or it might be built around a large stationary object such as a piano or organ. Obviously, ending “clutteration” via built-in storage units can, at the same time, make a home much more liveable. TREES, TREES, TREES! Some 130 native trees are found in the Great National Park — more than in all of Europe — and many species reach rather respectiable size, says the National Lumber Manufacturers Association. Yellow poplars grow to a circumference of 25 feet, hemlocks to 20 feet, buckeyes and cucumbers to 16 feet, and yellow birch and red spruce to more than 14 feet. No Pitch Scientists have no clear knowledge of why some woods are pitchy and some almost free of resin. Western red cedar and west coast hemlock are largely I free of pitch.

Caulking Compounds - How To Use Thom A caulking compound is a pias-tic-like semisclid, composed of a uniform blend of pigments, oils and thinners. There are three types of caulking compound, but all have the same purpose: to seal gaps in construction, preventing rain, sleet and snow from entering. A properly caulked home keeps out the cold air in winter, helping to hold down the heating bills. Typical places which should be checked for caulking usually occur where two dissimilar materials meet: around windows and doors; roof joints; joints between masonry blocks; floor v/all junctions; wood column junctions; around conduits passing through floor and walls; around outlet boxes; and gaps between rough attic floors and chimneys. Be sure, however, that you use only quality caulking compound. To be sure that you are getting a quality product, ask a friend or neighbor who has had a satisfactory caulking job which brand he used or consult your established reputable paint dealer. Before any type caulking compound is used, the surface should be properly prepared. The area to be caulked must be free of dirt, dust moisture and grease. There should also be sufficient space provided so that an adequate amount of caulking can be installed. ?• Caulking should not be installed when the temperature is below 40 degrees. Gaps deeper than 5/8 inch should be filled with cakum before the caulking compound is used. While caulking does not actually require painting, the National Paint, Varnish and Lacqtler Association recommends doing so to insure longer wear. Research has proven that the life of the caulking compound can be extended by a normal painting maintenence program similar to that given the exteriors of an average building. The three types of caulking compound are gum grade, knife grade and rope form. Gun grade, as its name indi-l cates, is applied' by "gun”. This type caulking is packaged in cans and in cartridges or plastic bags which fit a caulking gun. In estimating the amount of caulking needed so ra job, a rough approximation would be 10-15 linear feet per cartridge (1/10 gal.). The most common colors are wihte, off-white, natural and gray. When applying gun caulk, hold the gun at about a 45 degree angle to the surface. Hold the gun in the same plane as the gap to be filled. Don’t hold it at a right angle. All joints or needs of caulking should be at. least 3/8 inch deep. It figures that a generous bead of caulking will last longer

than a smaH bead. There are two kinds of caulking guns. In the first type, the cylinder is loaded with bulk caulking compound from its container. In the second type, the cylinder is loaded with a ready made cartridge. The latter has more appeal because the cartridge is simply dropped in the gun, and the trigger pulled for installation of the compound. Cleaning up is avoided. Rope caulking, as implied, comes in rope form which is simply unrolled and pressed firmly into' the crack with the fingers. No tools are needed. Rope caulking is ideal as a temporary seal because it can easily be removed. This type is best used for either temporary or permanent protection against drafts, moisture and dust around windows, screens, louvres and miscellaneous points in the home. Rope caulking is also recommended for sealing areas around hatches, windshields, cabins and masts on a boat. When planning to use caulking on a small boat, be sure to ask your paint dealer for Marine Caulking Compound. Lastly, there is the knife grade caulking compound. This type is applied wit ha putty knife or spatula. Knife grade caulking is particularly ideal for medium size cracks and crevices. Smooth Finish To get that satiny gloss finish on wood paneling like west coast hemlock or Douglas fir, be sure to sand down and rub the wood to a smooth-as-glass surface and then apply a sealer coat. After it had dried, you can apply any number of coats of. plastics, varnishes or lacquers, nibbing down each coat after it dries. This will give you a furniture-smooth wall paneling or wood surface. Lumber Care For best results, if you are storing lumber until it can be used, it is well to trim the top few boards over every few days to prevent cupping. Wood nailed in place will keep its shape, especially the stable western softwoods like Douglas fir and west coast hemlock, but loose boards have nothing to hold them in place and so need extra care. Planning? If you're planning now for your spring garden improvements think about adding an exciting structure like a gazebo. Here the family can gather and relax in a fun house which would give new character to an older yard. Built of long lasting western red cedar, these structures can. take many forms.

TRIM LOOK ‘IN’ A free-standing range is no longer a four-legged monster that dominates the kitchen. Today’s freestanding electric ranges have smooth, squared-off lines that fit flush with cabinets for an uncluttered, contemporary appearance. With automatic controls and many other features to fit any family’ needs, they are an integral part of a modem kitchen. Most Remarkable Wood is the most remarkable of all natural substances. It can be cut and sawn to make 1 u mber and plywood, it can be pulped to make paper, it can be pressed to make hardboards, it can be distillled to make valuable chemicals, and it can be burned to get charcoal, tars and other chemicals, and by the wood hydropysis process another family of chemicals can be obtained.
