Berne Bears Bears Defeat Angola In Final Overtime Battle; Oust Cadets In Opener

By Pete Reynolds The Berne Bears copped their second regional championship in three years Saturday night, when a field goal by Erv Inniger with six seconds to play in the overtime session gave the Bears a hard-earned victory over the pesky Angola Hornets, 54-52. The Bears had advanced to die ♦ tourney final by downing the Fort Wayne Concordia Cadets, 74-65, in the first afternoon tilt, and Angola eliminated the Albion Trojans, 62-49. Coach Bruce Smith’s charges face a rugged task in the Fort Wayne semi-state tourney next Saturday as they are called on to face the rugged South Bend Central Bears in the first game at 12:30 p.m. The South Bend Central team, picked by many observers as a favorite for the state title, was also forced into an overtime Saturday night to oust Goshen, 53-51, after sidetracking Columbia City, 7.7-41, in the afternoon. In Saturday's second game, the Huntington Vikings, victors over Marion, 69-61, after a three-over-time battle at Marion, will meet Noblesville, 69-68 winners over Kokomo, in the second contest Saturday. Erv’s Shot Winner Saturday's final game was a closed battle aU the way. Berne led by a narrow margin much of the first quarter, but Angola pulled into a 10-10 tie at the end of the period. The Hornets led the second quarter, twice by four points, but a field goal by Inniger and Jerry Fosnaugh’s foul cut the Bear deficit to one point, 26-25, at the half. The Hornets tallied only eight points in the third period, while Inniger’s eight points led the Bears to a- five-point advantage, 39-34, going into the final eight minutes of {day. Berne never trailed throughout the rest of the ball game, but the Hornets, battling gamely against their taller foes, as they have done all season, methodically chopped away at the Berne lead on some long range firing and moved within one point, 50-49, with 40 seconds to play, on Tex Bachert’s field goal. With 20 seconds to go, Angola regained possession of the ball, and with six seconds remaining, Mike Sapp was fouled while attempting a close-in shot. Sapp, season-long star of the Hornets, missed his first free throw but his second toss went in cleanly and the score was knotted. Berne had time only for one wild shot before the horn sounded the end of the regular playing time. Angola stole the tip launching the extra session, but Berne gained possession with 1:50 to play. Twenty seconds later, Kent Ringer took his only shot of the ball game and connected for a 52-50 lead. With 42 seconds to play, Ross Butler hit his fifth bucket and it was again tied. Then the Bears set up the winning play, with Inninger (who else), hitting a short shot from the side. Angola called time, but was unable to get a shot away. Inniger topped the Bears with 26 points, and Jerry Fosnaugh was the only other Bear in double figures with 12. Sapp led the Hornets with 15, and Bachert and Butler each added 11. Both teams hit 22 field goals, with the Bears converting 10 of 15 free throws, the Hornets eight of 13. ternoon opener, 74-65. After a nip and tuck first three minutes, when Concordia had a 7-6 lead, the Bears rolled off nine points in a row and the Cadets never quite recovered. The Bears took a nine-point bulge into the second period, 19-11. Berne lengthened its lead by one point, 35-26, at the half, as Inniger hit four from the field and Fosnaugh a pair. The Cadets stormed back at the start of the third stanza, and crept to within four points at 3733, but the Bears steadied and had their lead up to 10, 55-45, going into the final quarter. An all-court press, employed by the desperate Cadets, bothered the Bears some in the final period, but after Concordia came within six points at 70-64, the Bears steadied again and pulled away to their final nine point margin. While Inniger led the Bears with 26 points, Jerry Fosnaugh’s phenonemal shooting from his favorite spot, a jump shot from close in front of the bucket, amazed the fans. Jerry hit 11 of 3 attempts for a big 22 points. Bob Stably added 14 for the Bears. Tom Baack, Fort Wayne's leading scorer, topped Concordia with 19 and Dave Stauffer counted If. Hornets Oust Trojans Angola started fast in the second afternoon tilt, running up a 23-12 first quarter lead. The Hornets were still on top by eight at the half, 32-24, but Albion scored thhe first seven points of the third quarter and trailed by a single marker, 32-31 . Angola, however, began to click again and the Hornets got the next nine points and the Trojans were done for the afternoon. The Hor- ' nets took an eight-point advantage, 43*35, into the final period and stayed comfortably in front. Mike Sapp topped Angola with 23 points and George Shoup added 1, nine of them on free throws. Ross Cole led the Trojans with 19 markers and Steve Cobb tallied 11. Accolades are again due the Berne Bears and Coach Bruce Smith for bringing Adams county basketball fans their second regional tourney championship in the past three yean. ; • —oOo—— The Bears had to battle for their lives against a courageous Angola quintet, which kept in the thick of the championship battle Saturday night despite a very definite handicap in size. The Bears were at an extremely high pitch " in the tourney opener when they blasted the Fort Wayne Concordia Cadets out of competition, and very apparently were not “up” for the final game with the Hornets. The regional champs have a really rugged task in the offing Saturday when they tangle with the South Bend Central Bears in the opener of the semi-state tourney at Fort Wayne at 12:30 p. m. South Bend, rated among the top three teams in the state, had easy sailing in the afternoon with a decisive 77-41 triumph over the Columbia City Eagles, but the upstate Bears were forced into an overtime session in the final before ousting Goshen. 53-51. . i Saturday’s second game will match the Huntington Vikings with Noblesville.. The Vikings, after rubbing out Bryant, 60-28, were carried into three overtimes before downing Marion, 69-61. Marion had ousted Bluffton, 85-65. Noblesville barely squeezed by Kokomo in the Kokomo final, 69-68. Other leading quintets which came through the regionals Saturday included Muncie Central, undefeated Columbus, Evansville Bosse, East Chicago Washington, Lafayette Jefferson, Connersville and Terre Haute Garfield. —oOo— Best of luck again Saturday, Bears! Win Regional Championship

By Bob Shraluka IT’S Semi-state time nearing again and Adams county is still represented — thanks to coach Bruce Smith’s battlin’ Bears from Berne. THANKS to some terrific shooting, some real good rebounding, and displays of strong defense, the Bears are one of only 16 teams that are still “alive" out of the more than 600 that started play nearly two weeks ago. SMITTY’S Bears were paced, as usual, by the great Erv Inniger. But his teammates chipped in with plenty of help to enable the Bears to knock Fort Wayne Concordia and Angola out of the running and chalk up the second regional crown in the past three years tor Berne. TORRID shooting got the bears through the 43rd annual regional tourney, and they will now go against the second-ranked team in the state at 12:30 p. m. next Saturday—the former state champion South Bend Central Bears. —oOo— IN the two games the Bears shot an even .500 from the field, dropping Concordia with a .544 percentage, and they came back to oust a good Angola club with a .449 shooting pace. AGAINST the Cadets, the Bears fired 16 baskets in 29 shots in the first half and 15 in 28 attempts in the second, for a 31 of 57 total. Concordia, meanwhile, hit .385 from the field, 25 buckets in 65 shots. IN the nightcap, Berne connected 10 times in 22 attempts in the first half and 12 times in 27 tries in the second half far a total of 22 fielders in 49 shots. Angola also hit 22 times but took five more shots for a .407 percentage, LED by the fine board work of Inniger, the Bears topped both Concordia and Angola in rebounding. In the afternoon they captured 15 offensive and 20 defensive rebounds for a total of 35, as compared to 18 offensive and 13 defend sive for the Cadets, a total pf 31.. They hauled down 37 more , at night, 13 offensively and 24 de*: fensively, while the Hornets managed only 22, eight offensively and 14 defensively. FOSNAUGH and Inniger weri tremendous from the field in both games, and both shot better than .500 for the tourney. “Fossy” hit an amazing 11 of 13 against Concordia and five of 13 against Angola to post a mark of .615 in the meet, 16 buckets in only 26 attempts. Talented Erv popped in 12 fielders in both games, using 21 shots in the title game and 23 in the afternoon, for a mark of .546, 24 buckets in 44 attempts. HUSTLING Bob Stahly also posted a fine shooting percentage in the two contests, as the slick guard hit five of 13 against Concordia and four of eight against Angola for a total of nine buckets in 21 shots, or a .429 mark. In the two games, the Bears hit 53 times from the field in 106 attempts for an even .500 percentage. The Bears outrebounded their two opponents a combined <3 to 53 in the two contests. INNIGER showed the “big city” he was all his press clippings said he was as he was not only the. tourney’s top scorer but its top rebounder, by large margins in both cases. BIG Erv hauled down 21 rebounds against Concordia, surpassing anything he had done off the boards in the sectional meet here. He pulled down ten offensive rebounds and 11 defensive against the Cadets as his team controlled the boards. At night the senior forward grabbed six offensive and 10

defensive for a total of 16, and a two-game total of 37 rebounds. FRED Clauser pulled down five against Concordia and 10 against Angola for a tourney total of 15, and the hot-shooting Fosnaugh totaled 12, seven against the Hornets and five against the Cadets. SCORING 26 points in each of' the two games, big Erv was the tourney’s top scorer as he finished with a total of 52. Mike Sapp of the well-coached Hornet team was runner-up with 38 and Fosnaugh was close behind with 34. Stahly followed Fosnaugh with 23 tallies in the two battles. FORT WAYNE basketball fans are undoubtedly glad they have seen the last of Inniger. Two years ago, when the Bears went to the finals of the semi-state, big Erv was the tourney’s top rebounder with a total of 25 in two games, and he scored 28 points in the two games, hitting six of 10 shots in each of the two contests. His two buckets in the last three minutes “iced” a 56-42 win over South Side in the championship game. STAHLY combined with Inniger to break the backs of the Cadets in the all-important afternoon game. With less than five minutes remaining to play the Bears held a slim 57-51 lead. Inniger pumped in three buckets in a row, the third on a beautiful pass from Stahly, and then Stahly connected GARARD—TOUR NOTES 2 and the lead was ballooned to 6551 with less than three minutes to play. KENT Ringger, Bear guard, scored only once in the entire two games, but it was certainly a big bucket. Ringger, who has been bothered by a foot injury the last month, canned his only fielder of the day with 1:33 remaining in the overtime, giving his team a twopoint lead. KARL Kingsley, another of the less-known Bears also had his big moment. With 54 seconds to play in the afternoon, the senior guard cooly dropped in a pair of charity tosses to give his team a 72-64 lead and put the contest “on ice.” —oOo— TRIBUTE must also go to Angola, as John Hammel's wellcoached team played two real fine games, and they definitely have a height shortage. It was too bad' either team had to lose at night. THIS corner thought it quite fitting that Inniger hit the shot with six seconds to play that won the Bears anoher regional crown. It couldn’t have happened to a more tremendous athlete and fine gentleman. FOR an all-tourney team we would have to start with Inniger and Fosnaugh, add Stahly and also take Sapp and Dave Stauffer of Concord!. For a second five, Ross Butler and Tex Bachert of the Horents, Tom Baack and Dave Widenhofer of the Cadets and Ross Cole of Albion. WHILE the Bears won’t be given much of a chance secondranked South Bena Central, don’t count them out. Many counted
