Berne Wins Fourth Straight Sectional Crown

Bears Edge Out Monmouth Eagles In Thriller In Final Game Saturday, 63 To 61

By Pete Reynolds Brilliant Erv Inniger led the Berne Bears to their fourth consecutive sectional championship Saturday night as the Bears squeezed past a fine Monmouth Eagles’ quintet by a 63-61 count in the final game before a packed Adams Central gym. Inniger ripped the nets for a big 29 points in the championship battle, while Don Brown, veteran Eagle guard and the county's second leading scorer over the season. showed equaly as brilliant as Inniger by popping 28 markers through the hoop. The Bears advanced to the climax game with a 53-37 triumph over the Decatur Commodores in Saturday’s first semi-final tilt, and the Eagles won their way to the title game with a 70-59 conquest of the Adams Central Greyhounds in the second semi-final. Berne will be making its fourth straight appearance in the regional at Fort Wayne next Saturday, meeting Fort Wayne Concordia Cadets in the regional opener at 12:30 pW. Concordia became the first parochial school to win the Fort Wayne sectional by downing Fort Wayne North, 55-51, in the Saturday final. The second regional game will match Angola, winner of its own sectional, with Albion, the winner at Kendallville. The regional final will be played at 8:15 p.m. Saturday. Final A Thriller Saturday’s final was a real championship battle. The first quarter was pretty much all Berne, as Bob Stahly’s nine points and seven by Inniger got the Bears away to an 18-13 lead. Fred Clauser boosted Berne’s lead to seven to open the second period, but the Eagles began to click and finally went around the Bears at 26-25 on a pair of free throws by Dean Schieferstein. Jerry Fosnaugh’s first basket of the night put Berne back on top but Schiefarstein’s third fielder of the period sent Monmouth to the dressing room with a 28-27 advantage. Monmouth twice held five-points during a nip and tuck third quarter, but Iniger’s three-point play with 27 seconds to play knotted the rivals at 42-42 as they entered the final eight minutes of play. The quintets continued to trade points through a hectic fourth stanza which saw the score tied twice, at 44-44 and 46-46. The Eagles led three times by three points, at 49-46, 51-48, and 53-50. With 3:30 to play, Stahly’s bucket gave Berne a 54-53 lead, but Denny Braun’s two-pointer sent the Eagles back in front at 55-54. With 2:45 left, Inniger’s 12th field goal put Berne back on top at 56-55, and the Bears did not trail again. Clauser made it 58-55, but Don Brown whittled it to 58-56 with 1:55 left; Ten seconds later came

the play that proved decisive. Fosnaugh clicked for only his third two-pointer of the night and Clauser, when fouled on the same play, sank a pair of free throws and Berne was suddenly on top by five points. Braun sliced the Monmouth deficit to three with 20 seconds to play but Stahly dropped in a foul toss four seconds later. With 10 seconds left on the clock, Brown whipped in his 13th twopointer to climax a terrific high school career and Berne's lead was only two points, but the Bear’s kept control of the ball for the last few seconds. The scoring of Inniger and Brown overshadowed all other performers on the floor. Stahly scored 15 and Clauser 12 for Berne, while Schieferstein counted 16 and Braun 11 for the Eagles. Monmouth outscored Berne from the field, 27-24 but the Eagles had a bad night at the foul line, converting only seven of 15 chances, while the Bears dropped in 15 of 21, as 14 fouls were called on the Eagles, and 12 on the Bears. Bears Oust Commodores The Bears did not have much difficulty in their semi-final tile as they ousted the Decatur Commodores, 53-37. The Commodores led briefly at 6-3 on a pair of field goals by Dan Lose and one by Mike Baker, but a three-point play by Erv Inniger knotted thescore at 6-6 with 3:34 to play in the first quarter. But the Comodores scored only one more point, a foul toss by Baker, and the Bears took a 16-7 bulge into the second period. Berne's lead was upped to 16 points at the half. 33-17, and to 19 at the third period, 49-30. The two teams scored only 11 points in the final quarter as reserves played much of jthe period. Jerry Fosnaugh topped 'the Bears in this one with 21 points. Inniger counted 18 and Stahly 12. The Commodores had only two players in double figures, Dan Lose with 11 and Ed Kohne with 10, and Larry Gase close with nine. Greyhounds Eliminated A big 34 points by Don’Brown showed the way for the Eagles in their 70-59 victory over the Adams Central Greyhounds in the second semi-final. The Greyhounds held one-point leads twice in the early going, but the Eagles went ahead to stay at 10-9 with 2:24 to play in the first quarter. Monmouth had its lead up to five points, 17-12 at the end of the period. Adams Central crawled back to within three at 21-18, but the Eagles pulled away and had a nine-point advantage at the half, 35-26. Monmouth increased its ad-

vantage slightly in the third period and had a 13-point cushion of 51-38 at period’s end. The Greyhounds moved to within nine at 5243, but the Eagles again pulled farther ahead. Brown’s 34 points easily topped the Eagles, with Schieferstein adding 16 and Clarence Scheumann 11. Gary Workinger was outstanding for the Greyhounds and led his mates with 18 points. Don Sharp, with 12, was the only other Greyhound in double figures. The Eagles had a fine game at the foul line, sinking 18 of 22 opportunities, while the Greyhounds made 15 of 26, as 7 fouls were called on Monmouth and 16 on Adams Central.
