Tourney Notes

By Bob Shralnka CONGRATULATIONS are out to those Berne Bears and coach Bruce Smith, who made it four in a row Saturday night in a victory that was probably the most gratifying of the last four. —-000— FACING a team that had beaten them by 18 points in January, the Bears, led by their one-man gang, Erv Inniger, were really up for this one and were not to be denied. They had it when it counted and it never counted more than Saturday night. THE title contest was virtually a two-man battle between two of the finest basketball players to come out of Adams county, Inniger and Don Brown of the Eagles. The ability of these two has been applauded the past three seasons, and both proved their greatness Saturday night. —oOo—. BOTH clubs shot at a good clip in the title clash, with die Eagles having slightly the better of the shooting percentages. Monmouth tired at a .415 clip, ’27 fielders in 65 shots, while the Bears shot an ecen .400, 24 of 60. MONMOUTH posted the best shooting figure of the day as they ousted Adams Central in the afternoon. The Eagles hit 26 buckets in 55 tries for a mark of .473. Berne hit .386; in the afternoon, 22 of 57, while Adams Central shot at .367, 22 fielders in 60 attemps. The Commodores, who gave it all they had against the Bears, shot at a .314 flip, 16 of 51. BERNE and Monmouth were nearly even in rebounding in their big battle. The Eagles hauled down 18 offensively and 16 defensively for a total of 34, while Berne grabbed 10 offensively and 21 de-

INNIGER and Brown were the top shooting individuals in the title game, as Inniger got half of his team’s fielders and Brown just one less than half of his team's total output. Lanky Erv needed 25 shots for his 12 buckets, while the slick Brown fired 29 times for his 13 DEAN Schieferstein hit eight of 20 at night and Denny Braun five of 12. Workinger’s six topped his team and Don Egly grabbed five. —oOo— INNIGER (there’s that name again) finished as the tourney’s outstanding rebounder with a total of 40 in the three games, 18 offensively and 22 defensively. Schieferstein was next in line with 35, followed by Fosnaugh with 23, Braun with 24, and Baker, Scheumann and Clauser with 20 each. Baker’s total of 20 came in only two games. BROWN (there’s that other name again) was the top pointmaker during the tourney, pump..ing in 81 tallies in three games for a tremendous 27.0 per game average. Inniger wasn’t close behind as he racked up 68 markers in three games for a 22.6 per game point total. —oOo— CONGRATULATIONS are also out to Adams Central principal Philip Souder and his crew of officials who did a fine job in handling the meet, despite “protests” from the lights one night and the scoreboard Saturday night. Another of those “just one of those things,” occurred during the tide game as the scoreboard clock quit working efficiently. The clock was run at the oench during the second period, and the trouble was repaired during the halftime intermission. THE tension could be felt in the air before that big game Saturday night, as both cheering blocs began whooping it up long before game time. —oOo— SOME very fine basketball players finished out Saturday afternoon and night, including fabulous Don Brown, Denny Braun and Clarence Scheumann of Monmouth; Gary Workinger, Don Sharp, Ed Hirschy, Steve Schlickman, Mervin Mann and Mike Ripley of Adams Central, and Mike Baker of Decatur Catholic. A TREMENDOUS battle was waged between Inniger and Brown in the final game, as the two really played their hearts out. Each was his team’s leader, and each rebounded, passed, hustled and scored as the team leader should in such an important ball game. —oOo— PROBABLY the proudest fan amid the wild celebration after the final buzzer Saturday night was Erv Inniger—Erv Inniger, Sr. that is. championship game, but there seemed to be a bit more satisfaction in this one. AFTER receiving 7,413 calls the first two sessions, the Daily Demo-crat-Citizens Telpehone Co. news service took in another 5,594 calls Saturday afternoon and night for a total of 13,007 during the tourney. A THOUGHT before winding up sectional tourney notes and awaiting Saturday’s regional play: the Bears were beaten by Monmouth previously by 16 pointe 4n season play and avenged that defeat Saturday night. They were beaten by Concordia by 62-55 near season’s end, so next Saturday presents another opportunity for vengeance. After Saturday’s clutch performance — don’t bet against those Bears. GO GET ’EM BEARS!
