The sectional tourney this week signals the twilight of another basketball season, although many thrills are yet to come. To some the season has been too long. To others it has not been long enough. Many are already looking forward to next season, while others are thinking of next season with doubt. There are even a few who aren’t interested. The sectional means something else to the Decatur Daily Demo-

crat’s two sports writers, Pete Reynolds and Bob Shraluka, however, the end of another long and tedious winter. Two weeks from Saturday, ■ if Adams county does not have an entry in the semi-state tourney at Fort Wayne, Pete and Bob will be done for the season — after working a total of 53 separate games from November to the middle of March. elude the number of games that either sees “on his own.” Between them they cover every game that the two Decatur elute — Yellow Jackets and Commodores — play during the regular season, plus all the county tourney, sectional and regional games. Two seasons ago they were called upon for an additional pair of games when Berne’s Bears advanced to the semi-state level The average Friday night schedule finds Pete in the local gymnasium covering the game of the Decatur team that plays at home, while Bob is in the surrounding area, with the local club that is on the road. But on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday, either or both is likely to be covering a Decatur game. The evening’s work rarely ends after the game’s final buzzer, however. For Pete there is work to be done at the office, as other games are called in and scores must be put in the window. Pub-

lisher Dick Heller is there to put the scores on the news service as they are received. For the less-experienced Bob, there is the long ride home from Angola, Garrett, Portland, Marion, Huntington, Union of Huntington twp., and other basketball sites in this section of Indiana. Work begins to pile up even higher as sectional time moves nearer and Hoosier Hysteria grows more frantic. For this signals the sectional extra. Pete keeps records of every team in the county during the season, the individual totals of the players, the team’s won and lost records, the scores of each game, etc. All this must be put together along with certified lists of each team and other items for the sectional paper. Bob begins about a month before the sectional, traveling to every school in the county for pictures of each team, their cheerleaders and the top scorers and rebounders of each team. The pictures must not only be taken, but developed and printed in time for the sectional extra. During the final week of the season, each coach must be contacted so that he may get pictures to the Daily Democrat of any of his players that have qualified for the “Top 13 Scorers” page in the sectional extra. Pete Reynolds has been with the Daily Democrat for 33 years now, writing sports for that entire length of time. He is without a doubt one of the top—if not the top — expert on Adams countybasketball. Pete’s “Basketbawl” column, that appears each Monday, is eagerly awaited by basketball fans, and widely read. Bob Shraluka is completing his third year with the Daily Democrat, and is the junior member of the sports staff. His four years of basketball at Decatur high school, however, lengthen his experience and knowledge. Both will be in the press row at the Adams Central gym before the Geneva Cardinals and Berne Bears square off Wednesday night at 7 o'clock. In the back of the minds of both will probably be next November, when stories and pictures of each county basketball team and their 1963-64 prospects will begin.
