DECATUR DAILY DEMOCRAT

THE SPORTS STAFF of the Decatur Daily Democrat (Pete and Bob), extend their greetings to the players, coaches, school officials and fans on the eve of the 1963 sectional tourney. —oOo— THE TOURNEY will get underway at 7 o'clock Wednesday night at the Adams Central gym, site of the tourney for the ninth year in a row. —oOo— ONLY TWO of Adams county's eight teams, the Monmouth Eagles and Berne Bears, posted outstanding records this season, with exactly half of the quintets finishing below the .500 mark in victories and defeats. —oOo— THE BERNE BEARS will be gunning for their fourth consecutive championship, a record now held jointly by the Decatur Yellow Jackets and the Monmouth Eagles. The Bears, after winning the 1962 sectional title, bowed in the opening game of the Fort Wayne regional before the Angola Hornets, 57-56, in an overtime battle. Fort Wayne Central, which ousted Ligonier in the second regional game, 92-56, then dropped Angola in the regional final, 59-45. In case you have forgotten, here are the scores of the 1962 sectional: Commodores 66, Adams Central 57. Yellow Jackets 84, Geneva 57. Monmouth 65, Hartford 52.

Pete’s Picks
Berne 71, Pleasant Mills 54. Yellow Jackets 67, Commodores 63. Berne 81, Monmouth 62. Berne 75, Yellow Jackets 59 (final). —oOo— SINCE 1940, when the sectional became an all-county' affair, Basketbawl has attempted to pick the winner of every game. We couldn't brag on our ability to pick winners, as we have picked every winner only three times over that span of years. Last year, incidentally, was the third time, which made our record look a mite better. However, she eventual champion has been selected on many occasions, but only three perfect marks. Following are Pete's "picks" for this year: —oOo— GENEVA-BERNE—The defending champion Bears whipped the Cardinals by 30 points early in the season. With the recent illness of Mike Newcomer, Adams county's leading scorer for the season, certain to slow down the Cardinals, it doesn't look like much chance for Geneva. We pick BERNE. —oOo— PLEASANT MILLS-COMMODORES—These teams met in December, with the Commodores eking out an overtime victory. However, the Commodores have lost their top scorer through ineligiblity, and the Spartans have improved. We pick PLEASANT MILLS.

—oOo— YELLOW JACKETS-ADAMS CENTRAL—These teams met in Decatur's season ppener and the Jackets won rather handily by a 13-point margin. But, the Greyhounds are the most improved ball club in the county since the opening of the season. We pick ADAMS CENTRAL. —oOo— HARTFORD-MONMOUTH—The Eagles whipped the Gorillas by 30 points in regular season play and have the best wonlost record of any team in the county. We pick MONMOUTH.
