Foundry Operations Higher In January Operating rate of gray and ductile iron foundries in Northern Indiana during January was 76 per cent of ideal capacity, up 8 points from the 68 per cent level attained in December, 1962, a monthly survey fry the Grey Iron Founders* Society showed today. The Decatur Casting Co. is one of the founders reporting. Average for the United States and Canada during January was 77 per cent of ideal, a slight increase over the comparable month last year, when gray and ductile iron foundry overations rose significantly over 1961. Ideal capacity is the most normal, efficient rate of operation as computed by each foundry. Gray iron foundries in virtually all areas of the country reported a gain in operating level during January over the preceding month. January casting shipment of 181 foundries participating in the survey totaled 99,967 net tons, said Donald H. Workman, executive vice president of Clevelandheadquartered GIFS. Grey iron casting made up 97,318 tons, ductile iron castings, 1,532 tons, and high alloy iron castings 1,117 tons.
