Luis Arroyo ■ 1 Appears Set For Yankees By United Press International , The old baseball belief of “never bet against the Yankees” already looks like the best advice , of 1963 for American League fans . and spring training is only a few days old. Not that they needed any extra help, but it appears now that the world champions can count on Luis Arroyo to take his accustomed spot in the bullpen this season. Arroyo, the portly Puerto Rican who helped the Yankees win the AL pennant in 1961, hardly pitched at all last year after developing calcium deposits in his left elbow. In fact, he pitched a total of only 34 innings, which included only a couple of short stints after the All-Star games. Thursday, the likeable “quiet man” of the Yankee relief corps threw hard during a workout for , batteryman at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and predicted his arm miseries are a thing of the past. Expresses Confidence “If it stays like this, I’ve got nothing to worry about,” Arroyo said jubilantly. “I am confident I’ll be able to help the club this year.” While the Yankees were getting all that “good news” the poor Detroit Tigers, who never were able to recover after key injuries to Al Kallne and Frank Lary (among others) last season, already have something to worry about. Paul Foytack, who won 10 games and lost 7 while working in 144 innings last year, popped his sacroiliac out of place during a workout at Lakeland, Fla., Thursday, and rookie southpaw Mickey Lolick slammed a car door on the little finger of his left hand. Neither is expected to be out very long,, but you can almost bet what manager Bob Scheffing must be thinking — after all those injuries last year. Troubles With Signings The Tigers also seem to be having trouble satisfying some of their players. A total of nine—among them Lary, sluggers Norm Cash and Rocky Colavito, and BiUy Bruton — stiU remain unsigned. One bright note, though— Jake Wood, who slipped to .229 last year after a fine rookie season in 1961, slammed a home run during an exhibition game with the Hanshin (Japan) Tigers. Elsewhere around the major league camps the news still continued to focus on the signing of players. The Pittsburgh Pirates were the busiest in this department with General Manager Joe Brown announcing in Fort Myers, Fla., that he had signed catcher

INDIANAPOLIS (UPD—They’U have a real ball in the Indianapolis district before the one lucky contender makes it to the “Fieldhouse Four” of the Indiana high school basketbaU tourney. With four of the state’s topranking quintets in the area, it could be a real tossup, with the only certainty that Madison’s defending semi-state champs are given litUe chace. The top contenders are Muncie Central and unbeaten Columbus, 1-2 in the United Press International coaches’ board ratings; eighth-ranking Anderson and Indianapolis Tech, No. 9. Muncie, still trying for a record fifth state title, is a prohibitive favorite in its own sectional before advancing to the New Castle regional, where the Bearcats were forced into a double overtime by Middletown last year to reach the “Sweet Sixteen.” Trojans a Threat? This time, New Castle’s Trojans could make it rough. Despite a 12-7 record, they showed their teeth last week in upsetting Anderson, 65-64. Muncie’s North Central Conference champs have lost only to South Bend Central. Anderson also hits the road after the sectionals, making the Indianapolis regional a very interesting show, with the Southport sectional winner also not to be ignored. The first round at Indianapolis, however, could be full of surprises, although Tech drew the easy route and was considered a shoo-in for Saturday’s semi-finals. Three-time state champ Indianapolis Attacks, which has ruled the local sectional 10 out of the last 12 years, is on the spot from the very start, however, meeting city rival Shortridge, a team the Tigers edged by just 2 points last month. Cubs Took Lumps Broad Ripple loomed as Tech’s top threat in the sectional. From Southport, either the host Cardinals or Indianapolis Washington, winner of the city tourney, could make it to the second round. Columbus is the team to beat in its regional district, which includes Madison. The Cubs took their lumps this season after registering three consecutive unbeaten campaigns and a record 61-game winning streak that ended Nov. 27. Madison, 11-6 with one game to go, should not be extended in its sectional, but the Columbus regional looms as a “skyscraper” hurdle for Bud Ritter’s boys. Connersville, which clipped Madison’s long skein early in the season, figures to rule its regional district despite a somewhat deceiving 8-11 record. The Spartans have won three of their last four games, including an 81-80 overtime decision over New Castle. Smoky Burgess, shortstop Dick Schofield and outfielders Howie Goss and Larry Eliot. Bob Skinner, though, is still among the unsigned Pirates.
