Geneva Loses To Huntington Catholic Five The Geneva Cardinals suffered their 11th defeat of the season Wednesday night, dropping a 59-39 decision to the Huntington Catholic Ramblers at the Huntington gym. A slow start proved costly for the Cardinals, as the Ramblers built up a 17-5 lead in the first quarter and increased their advantage to 34-18 at the half. The Cardinals came back strong in the third quarter, trailing by seven at 40-33, and moved to within three early in the final period before Huntington pulled away again. K. Eckert, with 25 points, and Holmes, with 21, led the Ramblers. Larry Webb topped the Cardinals with 21 points, but none of his mates hit double figures. The Cardinals were still without the services of Mike Newcomer, the county’s leading scorer. Newcomer, however, has returned to school after a bout with a virus infection, and it is hoped he will be able to play in the sectional next week. The Cardinals dose their season Saturday night, meeting the Hartford Gorillas at the Geneva gym. Huntington Catholic FG FT TP Pfister 0 2 2 K. Michigan City, Gary Roosevelt Are Top Threats By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — Gary Roosevelt and Michigan City are the top threats from the Far North fa? the Indiana high school basketball tourney crown — but don’t ignore East Chicago Washington. Although licked seven times, the Senators have a habit of getting hot when it counts the most—like three years ago when they upset unbeaten Muncie Central for the state title. They made it to the title round last year, too, but it was left for Evansville Bosse to cut down the Butler Fieldhouse nets as winners. This time, coach John Baratto’s boys may have to dispose of strong Hammond in the sectionals—and East Chicago’s regional will be tougher still, with the Gary and Michigan City sectional winners also looking for a ride to the Lafayette semwrtate. Roosevelt or Tolleston? At Gary, either city champ Roosevelt or Tdleston should win the sectional. They cannot mee* until the finale. The same holds true for Michigan City and LaPorte at Michigan City. LaPorte licked Michigan City by 10 points recently and Roosevelt trimmed Tolleston by 8. Hammond beat East Chicago Washington by 7 in overtime. By the time the Northwestern district reaches the semi-state at the Purdue Fieldhouse, the overall competition shouldn’t be so fierce. The East Chicago regional winner should rule as the favorite to gain the 4-team finals, but the three other contenders won’t be there just to round out the field. Both Lafayette and Logansport, North Central Conference rivals, are favored in their sectional-re-gional districts, although neither has overwhelmed its opponents this season. In fact, Logansport went into the final game of regu-lar-season play with a poor 5-14 record. Rockville from Valley Wabash Valley tourney champ Rockville has the edge in the Covington sectional-regional area. The Rox are at home for the sectional. At Covington, barring an upset, they vie for second-round honors with sectional winners from Crawfordsville, Greencastle and Williamsport. None appears strong enough to challenge what should

be a classy field in the big showdown at Purdue. East Chicago Washington was the last Calumet power to go all the way in the 4-week grind, but the area has had only one other state champ—Hammond Tech in 1940. Both Michigan City and Gary Roosevelt are looking for their first title. Lafayette, in pre-season speculation one of . this year’s “hot” teams, has so far been somewhat disappointing. The Bronchos have lost five games, but Marion Crawley, the old master who has saddled three winners, could be cooking up a few surprises before this year’s show is history. Cincinnati To Seek To Start New Win Skein By United Press International If you think Cincinnati was tough while it was running high, wide and unbeaten, spare some pity for North Texas State which meets the Bearcats cm the rebound tonight. Cincinnati, top-ranked college basketball team in the nation, had its 37-game winning streak ended by Wichita last Saturday. And while the Bearcats were shaken at first by the defeat, they’re all mighty happy to have the pressure off. They’re ready to take it out on North Texas State, too, because a victory would clinch first place in the Missouri Valley Conference for the Bearcats and assure them of a chance to defend the NCAA crown they have won the last two years. For added incentive, the game is being played on Cincinnati’s home' coiirt The biggest basketball news on Wednesday was Marquette’s entry in New York’s National Invitation Tournament starting March 14. The Warriors later celebrated the occasion with a 77-76 triumph at Louisville. Marquette, which has a 14-7 record, thus joins Canisius, Miami (Fla.), Providence and Memphis State in the NIT. Canisius was upset by Detroit Wednesday night, 55-54, while Providence “escaped” with a hard 68-67 decision over Assumption. In other leading games, LaSalle outlasted Duquesne, 73-69; Temple upset Pittsburgh, 77-71, and Davidson surprised Wake Forest, 90-75.

Phil Rinufo On Road To Recovery ELIZABETH, N.J. (UPD —The word from Phil Rizzuto’s hospital bed is, “Don’t worry fellas, I'll be in shape for the next old timers’ game.” The former New York Yankee shortstop's right hand was still swathed in bandages following Tuesday night’s three-hour operation to save three fingers from amputation but the little “Scooter” was in good spirits. He got out of bed briefly Wednesday and was described by nurses as “smiling and wanting to know when he will go home.” Doctors said the 44-year old onetime most valuable player of the American League will remain in

the hospital for "several days.” Rizzuto’s right hand was badly mangled Tuesday in an accident which occurred while he was running a snow blower outside his Hillside, N.J., home. It was feared at first that he might lose two fingers but a three-hour emergency operation removed the threat of amputation. A hospital spokesman said doc-
