Decatur Commodores Lose To Harlan Hawks Friday By 56-45 Score

By Bob Shraluka Harlan’s Hawks rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to hand the Decatur Catholic Commodores their eleventh defeat of the season Friday evening, a 56-45 decision. The Commodores, who own seven victories, looked very good in the first half as they shattered a Harlan zone defense. Coach Elmer Strautman switched his lads into a sticky man-to-man in the second half, however, and the new defense threw the Decatur quintet off stride considerably. The local quintet took a 23-21 advantage to the dressing room at halftime, but couldn't hold the lead In the third quarter. A pair of one-handers from the corner by Terry Myers, who continues to improve, kept George Waning’s crew in front early In the third period, but fielders by Blake and DeLong moved the Hawks into a 31-29 lead and they never again trailed. Jim Schultz’s bucket tied the score at 31-31, but Blake and Smith hit for the Hawks within a span of 10 seconds and Harlan built a 40-34 lead. Dan Lose’s basket in the last five seconds cut the margin to 40-37 entering the last stanza. Cut To One Ed Kohne’s fielder to open the last frame whacked the Harlan lead to 40-39, but fielders by Delagrange and Black put the Hawks on top by five, and they steadly built their lead throughout the quarter. Harlan held a 7-6 lead after a low-scoring first quarter, but the Commodores began moving the ball well in the second stanza and had their best period of the night. Larry Case’s one-hander from the side gave the green and gold their first lead since early in the game. 16-15 at the 4:20 mark. Blake sandwiched a pair of buckets around a rebound effort by Mike Baker, and Case’s free throw had the two clubs knotted at 19apiece. White scored from the field and Baker connected on a free throw, giving the Hawks a 21-20 advantage. Kohne was ! the only other Commodore in twin ! figures, as he scored 12 tallies ‘ from his new guard position. Blake’s 20 markers topped the Hawks, and Smith and DeLong chipped In with 14 and 12 respectively. Only 19 personals were whistled by the referee.;, 11 on Decatur, who hit seven of eight free attempts. The Hawks connected on six of 12.
