their third state title. They won the others under Elmer McCall in 1953 and 1957. The Bears go into weekend action tied with Goshen for first place in the East NIHSC, with a fine 16-2 record and the No. 2 ranking in the state. Hiey have won nine in a row since being upset by city neighbor Washington in a holiday tourney late in December—a loss they avenged recently. Central’s only other loss was to Michigan City early in December, its top achievement a 71-66 victory at top-rated Muncie Central Jan. 19—a loss that wrecked the Bearcats’ bid for a perfect season. “I think that was our most thrilling win,” said Powers. “It was a tremendous game— also our

toughest.” Central depends on balance — like the 1953 quintet that went all the way with an unbeaten season record— and has no individual standouts such as the 1957 club built around brothers John and Sylvester Coalmon and the great outside shooting of Herbie Lee. Mike Warren is Powers’ top scorer — and he averages only about 15 points a game. But he has five other boys biting about 12 points a game—Jimmy Ward, Curt Crittenden, Dewitt Menyard, Mike Otolski and John McCullum. Menyard, a 6-9 senior an d considered tremendously improved over last year, is tops in rebounding with 16 a game, but he gets plenty of help from Ward, Otolski and Crittendon. Powers said he considers Ward,

a 5-11 junior, “the top rebounder, pound for pound and inch for tach, in the state.” Powers figured the South Bend sectional will be tough, with everybody gunning for his boys—especially city rival Washington. He predicted the Elkhart regional won’t be a pushover, either, and "I don’t quite know what to expect in the Fort Wayne semi-state, but it’s always a tough haul.** The Fort Wayne area had its last winner two years ago when Kokomo won its first crown. And if class wins this year’s 4-week shindig, the South Benders may do it again because, as Powers said, “I am convinced we are just as good or perhaps better than anyone we have faced so far this seasons.”
