Decatur Commodores Lose Final Home Tilt To Fremont Last Night
By Pete Reynolds The Fremont Eagles put a damper on the Decatur Catholic high school’s homecoming celebration Friday night, as the Eagles handed the Commodores a 61-50 setback in the Decatur team’s final home game of the season. It was the Commodores’ 10th defeat as compared to seven victories for the season. Fremont has lost only three decisions this year. Last night's contest was close Until the closing minutes of the third period, when the Eagles pulled away to a seven-point advantage. The first quarter saw the teams tied twice, at 12-12 and 14-14, with Fremont carrying a 16-14 margin into the second period, chiefly on four field goals by Doug Hufnagle. The lead changed hands nine times in a nip and tuck second period, with a three-point play by Terry Myers in the last half minute enabling the Commodores to take a 30-28 advantage to the dressing room. Jim Etheridge hit a pair of quick ones in the opening 80 seconds of the third quarter, sending the Eagles ahead, 32-30, and the Commodores could not catch the boys from up north. The Decatur lads ran into a cold shooting spell in the third bracket, scoring only seven points while Fremont added 16 to send the Eagles into the final eight minutes with a 44-37 lead. The visitors built their advantage to 12 points in the first minute and a half of the final stanza, and the closest the Commodores could come thereafter was 10 points. Etheridge and Dale Chard paced the Eagles with 17 points each, and Hufnagle added 11. Mike Baker topped the Commodores with 14, trailed by Larry Hake with 12 and Ed Kohne with 11. By Bob Shraluka The Decatur Yellow Jackets • suffered their 15th loss of the season Friday evening, losing a 56-47 1 decision in the Garrett “cracker-i ’ box.” ' The defeat was also number L eight in the Northeastern Indiana ’ conference for Decatur as against J one win. The Jackets have won , three times over the entire season. L Once again it was an inept offense coupled with a weak defense . that killed Yellow Jacket chances ; for victory. The visitors scored i only 17 times from the field as compared to 25 fielders for the Railroaders. As in past games, one bad period cost the Decatur five. After trailing 17-13 after one period, eight points in the second quarter the Jackets could score only while Garrett ripped in 24 tallies for a 41-21 halftime margin. Buckets by Jim Martin and Tom Maddox gave Decatur an early 7-3 lead, which they upped to 105 before Garrett came storming back. Hathaway’s basket at 2:13 of the period shot Garrett into an 11-10 lead and they held a four-point advantage starting the second quarter. Garrett hit for four straight buckets starting the second period, and moved into a comfortable 2513 lead. The host five steadily built their lead until the halftime, when they took the 20-point advantage to the dressing room. Baskets by Warstler and Hathaway built the Garrett lead to 4531 with two and a half minutes gone in the third quarter, their biggest lead of the contest. The Jackets then began whittling away at the lead but couldn’t score enough points to make a serious challenge, cutting the Garrett lead to 49-34 entering the final stanza. Adams Central Beaten Friday By Auburn Five The Adams Central Greyhounds saw their six-game winning streak snapped before the Auburn Red Devils, 7439, at the Auburn gym. The Greyhounds now have a 12-7 season record. The Greyhounds stayed with the host team through the first half, trailing by only two points, 16-14, at the fiist quarter, and 30-25 at the half. But Auburn scored 19 points in the third period to only seven for the Greyhounds, and the hosts took a 49-32 advantage into the final quarter. Shafer was Auburn’s hot shot with 28 points. Long added 12, Habig 11 and D. Cochard 10. Don Sharp was the only Greyhound in double figures, counting 10 points. The Greyhounds will host the Bluffton Tigers at the Adams Central gym next Friday. Funk paced Garrett’s balanced scoring with 14 tallies, and White and Hathaway chipped in with 10 each. Jim Martin, who looked more like the Martin of old, led all scorers with 19 points, and Maddox added 15 for nearly the entire Decatur offense.
