Mark Corral Unbeaten, Untied During Season J ■ | H ||r W ’ \ \W At Mark Corral
Mark Corral, 95-pounder on the Decatar high school wrestling team, finished the 1962-63 regular season in a very select group Thursday evening, as he wrapped up the season unbeaten and untied. Corral finished with a season record of 13-0, as he pinned Walters of Howe Military in the third period of the Thursday match. The unblemished record enables Corral to join a very small group of boys throughout the state of Indiana who finished their seasons without a defeat or a tie on their record. The mighty mite will now enter the sectional meet at Elkhart Saturday as a co-favorite in the 95-

pound weight division. In fact, he will be the only one of 72 wrestlers in the Elkhart who are unbeaten or untied. Voigt of New Haven, a 120-pounder, is unbeaten but tied once, leaving Corral the sole “perfect” wrestler in the meet . Sectional Bye Coach Gary Giesler came up with a “break” for Corral in Saturday’s meet, when he drew the 95-pounder a bye, meaning he will not have to wrestle in the morning matches. With the bye, he will have one match in the afternoon, and, if he wins that one, the championship at night. Five teams are entered in addition to Decatur. Other teams are New Haven, Elkhart, South Bend Washington Clay, Penn township and Mishawaka. Corral’s 13th win without a loss Thursday night sets a precedent for future wrestling teams at the local school. This is only the second year for the sport at Decatur high, but already coach Giessler has an unbeaten wrestler. This could very easily be the first and last however, as unbeaten wrestlers “don’t happen every day,” in the words of Giessler. Especially with the rugged schedule Decatur owns. Scored on once A check of the records following the match Thursday night revealed something even more outstanding than Corral’s unbeaten record. The little guy was scored upon only once the entire season! In 13 matches. Corral was victorious eight times by pining his opponent and he also won decisions by scores of 5-0, 7-0, 1-0, and 4-0. Then only match in which he was scored upon was a home meet with New Haven when Hetrick of
Wrestlers End Regular Card With Victory Putting on a tremendous performance, the Decatur high school wrestling team finished its season in a blaze of glory Thursday at Howe Military, downing the host team by a 33-9 score. The victory enabled the Decatur team to finish its second season in the wrestling spot with an even 500 mark of seven wins and seven losses. Coach Gary Giessler’s crew was out to finish their sophomore campaign in the sport with a .500 rating, and they did it in convincing fashion. After Mark Corral had chalked up win number 13 without a defeat, finishing the season unbeaten and untied, the local grapplers were never headed. “The Talented Trio” rang up three straight victories by pins, giving their team a 15-0 lead, and the rout -was on against a talented Howe Military club. Corral, who was scored upon once the entire season, pinned Walters of Howe wittf 14 seconds remaining in their match. Dave Adams come out and pinned Hultman with 44 seconds remaining in the second period, and Alan Kalver pinned Meals of Howe at the 1:15 mark of the second period. Finish 36-5 The three wins gave “The Talented Trio" a tremendous combined record of 36 wins and only five losses for the season. Corral finished the regular season at 13-0, Adams with a 12-2 mark and Kalver with an 11-3 record. The win was a fine team effort, however, as nine Decatur wrestlers posted victories. Gary Myers continued his fine wrestling of late, and picked up a 2-0 decision win. Myers finished the season with a fine record also, winning nine and losing only four, while tieing one, giving the first four wrestlers in the Decatur lineup a combined record of 45-9-1. Manuel Ybarra and Roger Conrad followed Myers with victories also, giving Decatur a 21-0 lead Ybarra copped a 4-2 decision, and Conrad won by a 9-3 margin. „Bachrach broke the scoring ice for Howe when he decisioned Kenny Hill by a 7-0 count in the 138 pound class. Sam Baumann and Tim Magley split in the next two matches, Baumann winning by 3-2 and
New Haven scored two points in the first period. s Corral, however, came back to chalk up four points of his own and win the match 4-2. His feats are accentuated even more by one other item—he had never wrestled before this season. First-Yew Wrestler It is an outstanding feat to finish a high school wrestling season unbeaten, especialy when scored upon only once. But when a “beginner” goes unbeaten in his first season and is scored upon only once, it becomes a rare and colossal feat. / Mark, has, however, a good knowledge ot the sport, as he learned tepidly this season. Much of the credit must also go to coach Giessler. * Speed is probably Corral’s biggest weapon. He combines this speed with a great amount of strength for a youth his size, and with a growing knowledge of the sport. “A fine boy,” his coach says, “a boy every coach likes to work with on any athletic team.” Corral’s record is a fine one, but a sectional title added would make it even greater. The large contingent of wrestling fans in the city wish the best of luck to coach Giessler, Corral and the entire Decatur team in Saturday's sectional. Magley losing by 10-3. Lehman, Reinking Win Deane Lehman, after three consecutive one-point losses, finally broke the jinx as he romped to a 7-2 decision over Corns. Larry Reinking also broke a losing streak, as he decisioned Mcßrearty 92. Dennis Smitley, a freshman replacing the injured Steve Hazelwood as the team’s heavyweight, put up a good battle but lost a 7-0 decision to Corwin of the host school. Giessler’s outfit now enters the sectional Saturday at Elkhart, where they will be one of six teams entered. The meet will be run all day, with matches in the morning, afternoon and evening. A wrestler will have to win three matches for a championship, unless he has drawn a bye, meaning he will have to win twice.
