Experts Explains Way To Panel Entire Room

Do-it-yourself Is an integral pert of our way of life today, and this handyman skill Is reflected in well kept, modern homes. Home handymen have progressed from simple repair jobs to major home improvement projects as their skills have sharpened, Today it isn't unusual to hear of handymen paneling an entire room to give it a new appearance. Hal Workman, home improvement director for the manufacturer of Marlite paneling, has pound that do-it-yourselfers like to work with 16” x 8’ plastic-surface hardboard planks because they are easy-to-handle and apply. Only ordinary carpentry tools — hammer, saw and level — are needed. Start In Corner When paneling a room, always start from a corner and work progressively around the room. First tack a level 1” x 2” starter strip temporarily in place at the bottom of the wail, he advises. The planks will rest in this strip during installation. Eventually the starter strip will be removed and a base molding will cover this space. Before beginning the installation. Workman says, plan the spacing of the planks on the wall. Then locate the first vertical joint, by marking a plumb line the required distance from the corner. Trim the first plank, if necessary, then apply adhesive to the plank and wall with a notched spreader. Place the plank in position with the plank edge toward the wall area to be covered. All Marlite planks have tongue-and-groove edges to simplify installation. Next fasten simple metal clips over the exposed groove edge. Clips should be place 16” apart along the groove edge. Workman emphasizes that the clips should be fitted snugly to the panel’s grooved edge before being nailed to the wall. Spacing Important Adhesive is applied to each plank before the tongue is inserted into the groove of the plank already installed. Press the planks gently together, allowing 1/16” in the joint. Workman points out the clips are designed to help pro-

vide correct spacing between panels. Here are several other points Workman believes important when installing Marlite planks: 1. Always install the planks over a surface that is clean and dry. 2. Saw Marlite with the finished side up. 3. Nails fastened base moldings should go below the bottom of the planks, never through them. The planks have a tempered hardboard base that is strong and dent resistant, a baked melamine plastic finish provides a permanent, washable surface. Damp wiping will remove mussy handprints, fruit juice stains and other causes of deterioration. Lumber dealers carry the planks which are available in high-fidelity woodgrains and pastel colors. Matching moldings also are available. The plastic-surfaced hardboard planks are 14” thick. Rent Receipts Have Ho Vallie The best investment a family can make is in a home, so say the nation’s top investment men. Get your home paid for first, say the experts, before you start an investment program. A good home will increase in value, these men point out, as we get more inflation. The reason; the home increases as the replacement cost goes up. A new home owner said, ‘‘One thing, I think, that made us buy right away is that be had rented for seven years. When we left, we figured we had paid out over ten thousand dollars in rent. And when he left, we took nothing with us.” If you put ten thousand into retirement of a mortgage, a banker says, you can be pretty sure you can get your money back, possibly with a profit. Most buyers today are looking for a home with high resale values, one home builder reports. Most families move into larger and more expensive homes as they

move up in the economic scale. So, they want a home they can sell when they move and one they can get their money out of. What are things to look for in a new home? A home builder answers the questions: 1) a good wood framed home with good style is the easiest to sell; 2) have plenty of exposed wood paneled walls, kitchen cabinets and ceilings; 3) have plenty of storage space, especially storage units in the walls which will replace furniture; 4) have wood home as attractive outside as possible with a good pattern of wood siding, well designed windows and doors; an 6) have a good wood deck for outdoor living. These are features which most modern buyers want, the builder said. There are several popular wood species which are used as siding and for interior paneling and trim. Among the most popular are Douglas fir, west coast hemlock and western red cedar.
