Yellow Jackets Lose To Portland Panthers By Score Os 65 To 47
By Bob Shraluka Scoring only 28 points in three quarters won’t win many high school basketball games — at least not in Indiana — which the Decatur Yellow Jackets discovered Friday night as they received a 65-47 thumping at Portland. The Yellow Jackets sputtered all evening on offense, scoring only 28 points in the first three periods, as they dropped their 14th decision as compared to only three wins. Portland is now 7-9 for the season. Coach Bill McColly, still trying to snap his team out of the doldrums, tried various combinations but once again nothing appeared to work. Substitutes played the final quarter and did manage 19 points in the period, but allowed Portland 18. Neither team did much scoring in the initial period, Decatur getting their first points at the 4:06 mark on a jump shot by Tom Maddox, with Pete Fleming’s jumper at the buzzer giving the host team an 11-8 lead after the first eight minutes. Build Lead Buckets by Dave Bennett and. Greg Williams early in the second quarter gave the Panthers of coach Harold Schutz, former Geneva mentor, a lead of 18-10. The Jackets whittled at the lead and trailed only 24-20 at the 3:00 mark, but the Panthers reeled off the next seven points to only a single basket by the Jackets, and took a 31-22 margin with them to the dressing room. If Decatur fans thought the first two periods were bad. the third was even worse. The Jackets didn’t get their first points of the quarter until 4:44 remained to play, when Dave Gay hit from under the Dry Cleaners & Laundry 12 lb. Load SPIN-WASH 20 c FLUFF-DRY 5 C Why Pay More? Decatur Commodores Whipped Friday Night By Hartford, 75 To 52
By Pete Reynolds The Hartford Gorillas smashed their 10-game losing streak with a decisive 75-52 whipping of the Decatur Commodores Friday night at the Decatur gym. The setback was the fifth in a row for the Commodores and left their season record at a 6-9 figure. The victory was Hartford’s fifth of the season as against 11 defeats. Terry Myers dropped in a free throw after 48 seconds of the game had been played, and that was the only time the Commodores were in the lead. Jerry Alberson quickly erased that lead with his first basket of the title and the Gorillas were never headed. The Commodores were only two points in arrears midway in the first quarter, 7-5, but the Gorillas rolled to an 11-point bulge, 19-8, at the end of the period. Loren Wanner poured in 15 points in the second quarter as the Gorillas tallied 25 points to boost their advantage at the half, 44-24. The Commodores’ 16 points were evenly divided between Ed Kohne and Larry Hake. The Commodores raised a little hope in the hearts of their fans with the opening of the third quarter when they hit three field goals in the first two minutes, one each by Dan Lose, Larry Gase, and Mike Baker, cutting the Hartford lead to 14 points. But the Gorillas quickly regained control of the game and had their 20-point margin back by the end of the third stanza, 60-40. Ron Habegger and Loren Wanner topped the Gorillas with 25 and 21 points, respectively, and Dave Fox added 11. Larry Hake topped the Commodores with 17 points and Ed Kohne added 13. The Commodores will wind up their home schedule next week, entertaining the Rockcreek Dodgers Tuesday and the Fremont Eagles Friday. The Gorillas play at Poling next Friday night. Bates or seeing the state become ineligible for certain federal funds. The U.S. Civil Service Commission notified Welsh Friday, that Bates was found guilty of violating the Hatch Act, which bans political activity by employes paid with federal funds. The commission said that if Bates is not discharged, the state may lose up to three times his annual pay, under terms of the Hatch Act. However, Welsh immediately efused to fire Bates and said, “We are unwilling to acknowledge there is any violation of the Hatch Act as intended by the Congress.” “If such a violation has occurred, it was a technical one, not one of intent and was not repeated after this was called to the attention of Col. Bates,” Welsh said. - Bates was found guilty in a federal hearing last summer of serving briefly as treasurer of a neigh-

The former assistant was Samuel Stone, who also was cited in the report. The commission said these activities “warrant their removal from the offices in the state they now hold.” Stone no longer is an employe of the Civil Defense Department or any other office under the governor’s jurisdiction. "In my judgment,” Welsh said in a tetter replying to the commission report, “it is ip the best interest of the State of Indiana and the civil defense program as it relates to Indiana, to retain Lt. Col. Bates in his present post as civil defense director for , the state.’* A spokesman for Welsh said the tetter from the commission was not necessarily the final step in the matter. Elkhart Man Named State Garage Head INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — Kenton Hershberger, 42, Elkhart, has been appointed superintendent of the state highway garage at Goshen, Governor Welsh announced Firady. Hershberger, who will fill the vacancy created by the death of Robert Martin, has been a general foreman with the commission since January of 1961. -
