Escape Tunnel Is Found At Prison
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (UPD— Warden Ward Lane sought today to learn the identity of all the plotters who laboriously over a period of many months dug an escape tunnel within 6 or 8 feet of freedom at Indiana State Prison. Lane revealed Thursday that a 25-foot tunnel 16 inches in diameter was discovered running from a hidden entrance beneath a tool crib in the prison machine shop almost to the west wall surrounding the maximum security institution. Nevertheless, the escape plot was virtually doomed from the start, so insurmountable were the hurdles to freedom. Many months of back-breaking work was ruined when prison officials flooded the tunnel with water from fire hoses, causing it to cave in. Escape was ‘‘practically impossible” for the convicts who dug the tunnel through the sandy soil from beneath the prison machine shop, said Lane. Had the tunnel reached the walls, said Lane, it would have had to be deepened beneath the footings or some way found to break through eight feet of solid masonry. Once outside the walls, the escapees would have been faced with large chunks of concrete purposely put in the ground to thwart such attempts. Six Locked Up Six convicts, some of them murderers, were locked up under separate strict security measures as suspects in the attempted break. Authorities were trying to ferret out the other members of the escape plot. Lane said the men must have worked in pairs, a different pair every few weeks. 25 or 30 of the 2,400 inmates was normally at work at the machine shop. He said the crew personnel changed occasionally but the number of men who would have had access to the tunnel to help with the digging was limited. Although work on the escape tunnel had been in progress many months, and authorities were tipped off to its existence “from 5 to 8 months ago,” Lane said they still had “a long way to go." Despite the tip, given by a convict who refused to designate its location on pain of death at the hands of his fellow inmates, guards were not able to discover it until three days ago, Lape said. Tunnel Shored With Scraps The tunnel was shored up with bits of ‘lumber secretly taken into the hole by the diggers as they worked from time to time. The men apparently hid the diggings in their pockets and flushed them down toilets or dropped them in earthen areas outside the buildings, State Correction Commission chairman Arthur Campbell said. Sweat - stained clothing was found in the hole, indicating pris-

oners had been working on the tunnel up to the day of its dis-' covery. the warden said. Lane said the work apparently stopped temporarily when convicts became suspicious of guards’ i watchfulness. The work was resumed only recently, he said. It was the fourth escape attempt by tunnel in the last 30 years. Campbell said. None of the other bids for freedom was successful. Lkpe declined to identify the prKbners pending further investigation. Three of the suspected prisoners were taken into custody Thursday morning and three others Thursday afternoon. Beyond the west wall is the prison cemetery where prisoners are buried who die behind the walls and whose relatives do not claim their bodies. —— “People will think you’re nuts if they catch you reading about those opportunities in the Democrat Want Ads!”
