Decatur Commodores Are Beaten By Geneva Tuesday Night, 68-53

By Pete Reynolds Geneva’s paced by their sharpshooting little guard, Mike NOwcomer, rolled to a big 20-point halftime lead Tuesday night and held on for a 68-53 victory over the Decatur Catholic Commodores at the Geneva gym. It was Geneva’s sixth victory in 11 starts, and the Commodores’ eighth defeat as compared to six triumphs. Newcomer rolled up a big 38 points in the Cardinals’ victory, with 31 of the points in the first half. Led by Mike s 20 points the Cardinals piled up a 26-14 advantage in the first quarter, and boosted their bulge to 20 points, 46-26, at the half, with Newcomer pouring in 11 more points. come back in the second half, and did manage to cut the Geneva lead to 11 points at 53-42 with 1:30 to play in the third period, which closed with Geneva on top by 13, 57-44. The Decatur lads got to within 11 points again at 62-51 with 1:42 to go in the game, but that big first-half splurge of the Cardinals was entirely too much to overcome. Newcomer’s big 38 points easily paced all scorers, although! he was limited to seven points in the second half. Larry Webb added 12 and Bob McCabe 11 for the Cardinals. Wrestling Matches / Tonight, Thursday Decatur high school’s wrestling team will go after wins number five and six tonight and Thursday, when they are matched with Manchester and Muncie South. The local grapplers travel to Manchester for a 5 o’clock match today, and will then return home for a Thursday engagement with the new Muncie school at the Decatur gym. Thursday’s home match for coach Gary Giessler’s crew will begin at 7 o’clock. The wrestlers, in only their second year in the sport, have been drawing fine crowds for home meets, and another good-sized crowd is expected to sit in on the Thursday battle. Admission is only 25 cents.

Berne Edged By Bluffton Tuesday Night The Berne Bears, despite a fine third-quarter comeback, suffered their second defeat of the season Tuesday night, dropping a 76-62 decision to the Bluffton Tigers in a hard-fought battle at the Berne gym. Bluffton moved to a first-quarter lead of seven points, 18-11, and increased the margin one point, 3527, at the half-time intermission. But the Bears bounced back with a vengenace in the third period, scoring 28 points to only 16 for the Tigers, and the Bears were on top entering the final eight minutes of play. 55-51. The Tigers won the ball game from the free throw line in the final quarter, hitting 13 of 15 free throws in the period, including seven for seven by Brad Bounds. The Bears outshot the Tigers from the field, 20-26, but made only 12 free throws to 24 for the Tigers. Berne lost both Stahly and Fosnaugh on fouls in the final quarter. Bounds topped Bluffton with 26 points, trailed by 19 for Luginbill, 14 for Taylor and 10 for Durr. Erv Inniger led the Bears with 22 markers, and Bob Stahly and Jerry Fosnaugh each added 18. Bearcats Os Muncie Still Rated As Tops By KURT FREUDENTHAL United Press International INDIANAPOLIS UP!) — The Indiana high school basketball elite seemed pretty well set today for the state tourney, with Muncie Central being chased by a handful of strong pretenders to the throne. For the third consecutive week, coach Ike Tallman’s Muncie Bearcats led the powerhouses in the United Press International coaches’ ratings. There was a red-hot dogfight, however, for “also-ran” berths between Michigan City, South Bend Central, Evansville Rex Mundi, Columbus and Anderson. Michigan City, the front-runner before Muncie took over, regained undisputed second place from the South Benders by an eyelash, 137 to 136 points, while Muncie, with eight first-place votes, collected eight more votes than last week for a total'of 164. The South Benders, tied for second place last week, slipped to third, Michigan City received five first-place ballots, South Bend only two. Bosse Remains 10th Rex Mundi, with three firstplace nods, remained fourth with 127 points and Columbus fifth with 126. Anderson clung to sixth spot with 109. Indianapolis Tech and state champion Evansville Bosse also repeated, in ninth and 10th place, respectively, although Tech was beaten in the Indianapolis city tourney finals last Saturday. Goshen moved up a notch, from eighth to seventh, trading positions with Gary Roosevelt, which split even in. two games last week. Balloting was for games through last Saturday. Indianapolis Washington, winner of 13 in a row since dropping its season opener and city tourney champ, was a newcomer in the Second 10, along with Wabash Valley tourney winner Rockville and Gary Tolleston, the new West NIHSC leader. American League To Open Card April 8 BOSTON (UPI) — President Kennedy can start getting his throwing arm in shape for the American League opener at Washington on April 8. Launching the season one day earlier than last year when the President also was on hand to toss out the first ball, the Washington Senators will play host to the Baltimore Orioles in the S2O million District of Columbia Stadium April 8. The official 1963 schedule, released by American League headquarters here today, revealed the Senators will get the customary one-day jump on the rest of the circuit. On April 9 all the other clubs swing into action with the Red Sox meeting the Angels at Los Angeles in a night game, the Yankees facing the Athletics at Kansas City, the Indians opposing the Twins at Minnesota, and the White Sox playing the Tigers at Detroit. A total of 429 night games have been scheduled by the 10 AL clubs including 24 twi-night doubleheaders. As it did last year, the schedule calls for each team to play 162 games with the season ending on Sunday, Sept. 29.
