Three Killed, Property Loss High In Fires Three persons were killed in fires which destroyed two supermarkets and two homes and caused nearly $600,000 damage during the weekend in Indiana. In another fire, two Evansville College students rescued a wheelchair - confined elderly woman trapped in her burning home in Evansville late Sunday. Two boys were burned to death early Sunday in a fire that leveled their converted chicken coop home near LaGrange. ' The bodies of Roger Lee Slabaugh, 5, and his brother, JohnDevon, 3, were found in the charred ruins of the small dwelling by firemen who were unable to get to thp, scene 'U time tff stop the blaze. 7 s Their parents, Mr. and Mrs; Perry Slabaugh, and a 6-year-old_ daughter, Berbie, escaped with only their nightclothes on. They were treated for exposure and released. Robert Barring, 32, died Sunday in a fire which destroyed his trailer home in Huntington. A neighbor, Floyd Elston, spotted the flames and pulled Harring unconscious from the trailer, but he died minutes later. Officials said the fire probably was caused by a defective kerosene heater. $500,000 Damage Damage was estimated at more than $500,000 from a Jire that destroyed the National Food Store at a shopping center at the northwest edge of Mishawaka Sunday night. Fourteen adjoining stores in the center were in danger of going up in flames during the hour it took firemen to bring the blaze under control. The fire was believed to have started in a refrigerator unit in the rear of the store which was opened less than a year ago. A fire believed started by a faulty flue or a short circuit destroyed a supermarket at Darmstadt, five miles north of Evansville, Sunday. Oscar Scherzinger, the owner, estimated damage at $60,000. Operations were slowed several times when firemen exhausted their water supply in pumpers and had to get fresh supplies from hydrants nearly four miles away. They also were hampered by temperatures barely above zero which froze fire lines. Dr a matte Rescue Elsie Bilderback, 75, Evansville, was rescued Sunday night by two Evansville College students from her burning home where she was trapped in a wheelchair. Launch Inquiry Into Stratofortress Crash DOW Alt FORCE BASE. Maine (UPl)—Air Force and civilian investigators gathered today to launch an inquiry into the crash of a 852 stratofortress that killed seven of nine crewmen. A preliminary board of inquiry called shortly after the crash was expected to turn its findings over to a permanent board early this week. A final report was not expected for several months. The giant jet bomber plowed into the base of Elephant Mountain in a wilderness area east of Greenville last Thursday. All nine crewmen were believed to have parachuted but only two survived. The survivors were reported under heavy sedation at the base hospital here. Lt. Col. Dante E. Bulli, 40, Cherry, 111., the crew commander, suffered a fractured right ankle and minor frostbite of both feet. Capt. Gerald L. Adler, 31, Forest Hills, N.Y., the navigator, received several broken ribs and moderate frostbite. Both men, who spent a night in intense, below-zero cold before their rescue by Air Force paramedics, also were being treated for shock and exposure. They were reported in satisfactory condition. The $8 million Strategic Air Command bomber crashed while on a routine training mission from Westover Air Force Base, Mass. Officials said the victims either died in the crash or very shortly afterwards. The preliminary inquiry board said no radio reports were received from the plane giving any indication of an emergency or mechanical trouble. Killed in the crash were Maj. Robert J. Morrison, 36, Dodge City, Kan.; Maj. Robert J. Hill Jr„ 37, Joplin City, Mo.; Capt. spotted smoke in the front room of the house and called to Mrs. Delsie Coleman, 46, Winslow, who was visiting her. Mrs. Coleman outside for help, and her cries attracted the attention of the two students. Jim Wooten, Evansville, and Rich Martin, Indianapolis, dashed into the home and carried Mrs. Bilderback in her wheelchair out of the house and into the home of a neighbor. — — “I think they’re wonderful,” said Mrs. Bilderback of the students after the rescue. She is an aunt of Assistant Fire Chief Delmar Ice of the Evansville Fire Department.
