Schaadt has received an honorable discharge and was one of the 11 in his com- . mand to receive the good conduct ■ medal, the army’s award for exemplary behavior, efficiency and fidehty. He was the former manager of Gale’s Marathon before ’ being drafted into the service in , February, 1961. (Continued from Page 4) ASCS 1 year when cost-sharing assistance was authorized for conservation practices primarUy for the benefit of wildlife. Beginning in 1963 on a limited 1 pUot basis in designated counties, financial assistance wiU be provided for converting cropland to grass, trees, water storage and recreational facilities for productive use. Conservation practices which help develop income-producing fishing, boating, swimming, hunting, picnicking, camping and other recreational use of the land will be considered in developing many of these pilot areas. HIGHLIGHTS OF WORLD FARM OUTPUT: World agricultural outputfar 1 crop year 1962-63 is forecast at about 3 percent above that pf • 1961-62. This is slightly greater than the expected growth in population but below the rise in world industrial output. ' ‘ Wheat production is forecast at 8.5 million bushels, or about 625 million above the 1961-62 crop. Largely responsible for this increase is Western Europe’s output — 625 million bushels over the previous year’s except for Eastern Europe, all other areas are reported to show stable gains too. Rye, after 2 years of belowaverage harvests, is estimated at 1,350 million bushels. A bumper crop in the United States brought North American production to the highest level since 1948. World production of feed grains, on a combined tonnage basis, may be about the same as it was in 1961-62, with a larger barley crop. offsetting smaller harvest of corn and oats. The increase in barley is general throughout the Northern Hemisphere but the oats dropoff occurred mainly in the Soviet Union. The world’s output of vegetable oils in calendar year 1963 will be; approximately 18.1 million metric tons —a new record, though only slightly above the 1962 peak. Soybean, peanut, cottonseed, sunflower seed and sesame oils are expected to gain, but this gain will probably be offset by a sizable drop in olive oil and a minor one in rapeseed oil. The increase of greatest significance will be a 3 per cent rise in soybean oil output, | largely because of record U. S. ( supplies. Palm oil production is expected to recover a portion of the reduction that occurred in 1962. A 1 per cent increase in the production of industrial oils is anticipated because of a larger outturn of linseed oil as the result of bigger flaxseed crops in the United States, Canada and Argentina. ATTENTION! ADAMS COUNTY FARMERS: Do you have a conservation problem on your farm? Have you previously received cost-share assistance to carry out a conservation practice? Your ASC county committee would like to help you — come to the county office and file a request for cost-share assistance while the county committee have funds availableto approve requests. Don’t delay — come in today. A WORD TO THE WISE : When the weather is bad, drive slowly. You will get there just as fast — sometimes faster — and always more safely. If you have something to sell or trade — use the Democrat Want ads — they get BIG results.
SOCIAL I SECURITY QUIZ 1. Q —Why has the contribution rate of social security, been scheduled to increase periodically? A—The number of older people in the country is increasing; therefore, year by year costs are expected to grow for many years. ' Ihcome from the gradually inI creasing schedule of taxes in the law will meet this expected future rise in costs without disrupting the economy by imposing the whole tax needed to support the program all at once. 2. Q—What happens to the social security taxes taken out of my wages? | A—First of all these tax contributions are placed in trust funds from which benefits are paid. One trust fund is used to pay benefits I to retired people and their dependents and the families of deceased workers. The other trust fund is used to pay benefits to disabled workers and their families. Money in the trust funds that is not needed for current payment of benefits is invested in government bonds. The interest on this morfey is added to the trust funds. 3. Q —Please transpose the new social security tax rates into dollars and cents increase for the employe who will have maximum earnings of at least S4BOO for the next several years. A—The social security tax rate is"the same for both employer and employe. If an employe has maximum earnings (S4BOO or more) in the next several years, his social security tax will amount to $l5O for 1962, $174 for each of the years 1963-1965, $l9B for each of the years 1966-1968, and $222 beginning with the year 1969. His employer will send in an equal amount for him in each of the years. 4. Q —l am a self-employed person, about 40 years of age, and am paying on the maximum of S4BOO each year. How much selfemployment tax wiil I owe for 1962? A—The tax rate for 1962 is 4.7 per cent or $47 per SI,OOO net earnings. At this rate, the tax on S4BOO is $225.60 for the year. 5. Q —lt is my understanding that social security taxes go into certain trust funds. Who watches over these trust funds? A—There is a board of trustees composed of (1) the secretary of the treasury; (2) the secretary cf labor; and, (3) the secretary of health, education and welfare. The managing trustee is the secre-

Itary of the treasury. 6. Q—Does all the social security tax go for social security purposes, or does part of it go into the general funds of the treasury? A—None of the social security tax is used for anything Other than social security. If taxes exceed expenditures in a given year — which they will ordinarily do—the balance goes into the two social security trust funds, which are kept separate from all other government funds. The assets of the trust funds are invested in inter-est-bearing government bonds. 7. Q—What happens to this interest earned by the reserve funds? A—This interest goes into the trust funds in the same manner as do the social security taxes, and all benefit payments are made directly from these funds. I Modern Etiquette | I By Roberta Lee I Q. If a girl is to be married in church wearing only an afternoon dress and having only one maid-of-honor, is she supposed to invite only a very few friends and relatives to this type of wedding? A. There is no limit to the number of guests she may invite, provided of course there is ample room for everyone. Q. I should like to insure my engagement ring, which is a very valuable one. Is my fiance supposed to pay the premium on this policy? A. The ring’s safekeeping is entirely your responsibility, and you should pay the premium costs. After you’re married, of coure, your husband assumes this ex- ' pense. . Q. Which is the proper expres- ■ sion, “The boy is named after i his father,” or, "The boy is named for his father”? 1 A. the preferred form is, “The boy is named FOR his father.” Q. When a male relative performs the rite of giving the bride away (her father bieng dead), does he then take his place in the front pew next to the bride’s mother? A. This is the usual procedure, although it is not absolutely necessary. . Q- Is it aU right for a hostess to serve several dishes at a time, if she must do all the serving her- ’ self. A. Certainly; considerate guests wouldn’t think of criticizing her for this. Q. Would it be proper for us to send a wedding gift of money to some newlyweds who live in a distant city? A. This would be quite all right. If you have something to sell or trade — use the Democrat Want ads — they get BIG results.
Polaroid To Sell | Color Films Soon Thomas J. Briede, manager of Briede Studio and Camera Shop, , has received word from the Polaroid Corporation that color film will be sold in Florida, beginning January 28. Briede stated that Polaroid plans to introduce the film state by state as production rates build up, and that the introduction schedule is not yet complete. Briede will have a schedule available in a month or two, but he feels it may be late May or early June before the new color film has covered the entire country. He explained that he will have shortly available material that describes the film in detail and also details of the Florida introduction and other information that may be useful to interested persons before the film is actually available. The film will work in Polaroid cameras he has sold since 1948. Like a black and white film, the new color film carries all the chemicals needed for its own developing and printing. At present, Briede has on back order with the Polaroid Corp, in Melrose Park, 111., one case of the new color film of the 40 series to work with models 850, 900, J 66 and the 210. He said he will notify the public as soon as the new color film is available at his store. I 20 Years Ago | I Today I Jan. 26, 1943 — Pres. Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced that only unconditional surrender by the Axis forces will end the war. Adams Post 43, American Legion, has purchased 400 satin finish service flags for free distribution to families with sons in the armed forces. The dry goods store at South Whitley, owned by Jess Leßrun, former Decatur resident, was destroyed by fire. Sgt. Tony Bonfiglio writes that the temperature is 60 degrees below zero where he is stationed with the army at the Alaskan-Canadian border. Staff Sgt. Llyod J. Mahan, son of Mrs. Maud Mahan of Monmouth, has been awarded an air medal in England for “exceptionally meritorius” achievement while serving on bombing planes.
