support for his regime. They also said that resentment is rising over -the Russians in Cuba. A Pan American World Airways DC6B brought 98 Cubans and Cuban-Americans here, along with four Red Cross officials, West German diplomat Johannes Hellmuth and his daughter. A cargo vessel, the Shirley Likes, was due at Port Ever- ! glades north of here tonight or : Thursday with up to 1,000 more I refugees, another Pan American plane was to fly to Havana Thurs- ; day with a load of ransom supplies and return with still more
refugees. A Red Cross spokesman said I the sailing of the Shirley Lykes I was delayed due to “necessary clearances by the Cuban government of the people scheduled to leave, and internal transportation problems in Cuba.” This week’s arrivals will increase to more than 3,000 the number of refugees the Castro regime has permitted to leave Cuba since just before Christmas, including the 1,113 Cuban invasion prisoners for whose freedom the United States is paying $53 million in ransom. Wednesday’s Pan American plane, donated to the Red Cross, brought the refugees here after carrying a load of ransom supplies to Cuba along with cots, blankets and a medical team to attend the refugees sailing aboard the Shirley Lykes. The passengers on the return flight included 41 children. Many of the refugees were U.S. citizens, and others were Cubans permitted to leave because a spouse or a child was born in the United States. At Least 12 Die In Fires In Midwest By United Press International At least a dozen persons died Wednesday because of fires touched off in some of the Midwest’s bitterest cold of the century. ~ — Most of them were children, five in one family and three in another. Wilt Jefferson, 37, returned to his Milwaukee North Side home to find firemen carrying out the bodies of his sons Harry, 13, Ray, 7, and Chester, 4, and daughters Debra, 5, and Diane, 2. Three other Jefferson children, Lawrence 11, Delores, 10, and Linda, 8, were at school when the flames swept the two-story frame house. Authorities said the mother Mrs. Arleava Jefferson, also was not home. Firemen said one of the children may have started the blaze while playing with matches in the attic. Three daughters of a prominent Morris, Hl., farm family died in the rubble of their home in 15 below temperatures. The bodies of Carol, 15, Nancy, 12, and Kay Matteson, 9, who were sleeping in an upstairs bedroom, were found after the fire left nothing standing but the brick chimney. Their parents, Mr. and Mrs. - Hendley Matteson, and three brothers, James, 20, John, 18, and David, 11, escaped. The boys jumped from a second floor window. The parents and John were kept in a Morris hospital for treatment of burns, shock and exposure. The Mattesons were named the outstanding farm family of Grundy County in 1961. Authorities said the fire apparently started from a faulty space heater in the kitchen. Dula Stanford, 12, her sister, Dianne, 8, and their great-aunt, Mrs. Carrie McGee, 67, burned to death when fire swept their apartment building Gary, Ind.
