Builders, which opened the building on October 3, 1955. The Center has a number of meeting rooms which are used by groups dealing with housing matters. Edward W. Pratt, a Detroit home builder who is chairman of the Center’s Board of Trustees, said that more than 800 meetings and conferences on housing and home building were held in the Center last year. They included sessions of builder associations, business firms, trade associations, government housing, agencies, homemakers, architects, and engineers. Among problems discussed were cost cutting in homebuilding, market research, housing for the elderly residential lighting. and many other of the innumerable facets of the housing industry. A feature of the Center is a library that is considered the largest in the world devoted exclusively to housing books and publications . Although the library is maintained primarily to aid members of the National Association of Home Builders, the public is welcome to visit it and consult its papers and books. Among the many who have
Cleaner Dishes Automatically Do automatic dishwasers actually save time and work? Nearly 4,000 dishes, pots, pans, glasses and cooking utensils are washed every month in the average home. And the housewife averages more than an hour a day washing, rinsing, and drying these dishes by hand. Here are some answers supplied by the Home Service Department of Kitchen Aid, one of the leading manufacturers of home dishwashers: Do automatic dishwashers do a thorough job of washing dishes? Studies have shown that they wash dishes cleaner than the housewife because they use hotter water and special detergents and because soil dripped frim dishes is filtered out of the water as it is recirculated. How much water does an automatic dishwasher use? In few cases does the dishwasher use more water than you would washing and rinsing by hand. In many casqs, it uses less water. The fiffl cycle on the new Kitchen Aid models, for instance, uses less than 12 gallons of water.
checked floor plans and other housing feautres in the Center’s library when planning a home were Col. John Glenn, this country’s first orbiting astronaut, and Mrs. Glenn. They spent a morning in the library seeking ideas for the home they were planning in Texas. Throughout the year, many special exhibitions, usually of an educational nature are held at the Center, such as the display of the 300-year-old art of Japanese flower arrangement known as Ikebana. The colorful grouping of flowers were of special interest to homemakers. This year for the first time, the Center is featuring a professional decorated “Room of the Month.” Members of the D. C. chapter of the American Institute of Decorators are taking turns each month in creating the room. The Center, which is a “must” on the schedule of foreign visitors active in the housing field, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 6 p.m. Located at 1625 L Street, N. REW FLOORS AT LOW COST WITH DO-IT-YOURSELF KIT
“Do-tt-yOufselfefs” for years have thought nothing of grabbing a paint brush and re-doing the walls of their homes without professional help. Up until recently however, few have felt like tackling the job of a new floor. And most who have, have felt restricted to various substitute flooring. Now, thanks to the world’s largest maker of hardwood floors, any husband who can handle a hammer can lay his own genuine hardwood floors. With special “do-it-yourself” packages of hardwood flooring —- even presanded, prefinished and prewaxed at the factory — any handyman can lay new hardwood floors in an entire room in less than a day. • There is no restriction on style. New hardwood flooring packages can be purchased from almost any lumber dealer in a variety of styles. Ranch Plank''a popularly priced version of the colonial ran-dom-with, eased-edge flooring with walnut pegs, Crestwood —a special three-eigths-inch thick hardwood strip floor with medium finish — and Fireside Plank — the newest distinctive hardwood flooring, with dark “Midnight” from E. L. Bruce dealers in spefinish — are now all available cial packages for the handyman. A Crestwood package, for instance, even includes the nails. Each piece of flooring is marked where the nails should be driven. The nailrite —a brand new tool to prevent splitting of tongues and grooves and to properly set each nail — is also available. All “do-it-yourself flooring packages, have installation instructions printed right on the cartons.
Utilities Urge Good Building To Save Money In view of the swift expansion of electric house-heating and coolingin recentyears, manyelectric utility companies have adopted a uniform approach to good construction practices for electrically heated and air conditioned homes. The recommended quality of construction gives the following benefits; , 1. Greater comfort during both the heating and cooling seasons.2. Low first cost of both electric heating and cooling equipment. 3. Low operating cost. The utilities’ purpose is to help home owners construct houses to retain heat in the winter and keep it out in the summer. The amount of insulation required to keep heat loss or gain at the recommended, levels is expressed in “R-factors,” which represent the installed resistance of insulation to heat gain or loss. The utilities suggest that the ordinary style of frame house be insulated with R-19 insulation in the ceiling, R-ll in the walls, and R-18 for floors over ventilated crawl spaces. These levels of insulation meet the Quufcty Home Requirements of the National Mineral Wool Insulation Association. Completely weatherstripped and double-glazed wood windows and doors will reduce the overall heat loss in any home, and are essential for maximum economy and comfort in houses with a high percentage of wall area devoted to windows. In exceptionally cold areas triple glazing should be considered. Home owners are advised to put tight-fitting dampers on fireplaces and to cover the ground under a slab or crawl space with a vapor barrier. Performance of insulation depends on proper installation as well as on the right quantity.
U-Shape Kitchen Is Handy Homeowners cramped for space will find many advantages in a Ushaped kitchen. Not only does it pack many utilities in little space, but it also saves steps and provides work-flow convenience. U-shaped kitchens are usually laid out with the stove on one side, the refrigerator on the other, and the sink at the curved end of the “U.” Thus, the sink is handy both to the refrigerator and stove — while to get to the refrigerator from the stove, or vice versa, the housewife need only turn around. And, while working at any of the three work stations, other persons can readily enter the room without creating traffic jams. (The center aisle of the “U” should be at least four feet across.) Counter work space is built on both sides of the stove and the sink. If surfaced with quality materials such as ceramic title the countertops provide added working space for hot pots and pans, wet vegetables and cutting or slicing. And, because real tile is stainproof, such countertops are easy to keep clean. The U-shaped kitchen provides adequate space for doors and windows, including a window over the sink which many housewives prefer. And cabinets can be located over almost all the counter space, providing more storage space than many other types of kitchens. Patchwork Out; Do Complete Job On Leaky Roof Patchwork sometimes pays —• when the elbows of a favorite jacket give out, for instance. But it’s false economy to patch a shabby, leaky roof. A roof usually wears out evenly, so when one or two leaks develop in an old roof, others may be quick to follow. Sometimes . just walking on an old roof to patch it opens up new leaks. Better than spot repairs is a complete new roof. Asphalt shingles, which are low in applied’ cost, durable, and attractive, can be applied over most existing roofs, making re-roofing practical in any season. A new asphalt shingle roof will add value to the house and will protect it for years. . ; ..

WOOD AND WALLS THE SAME Woodwork should usually be enamelled the same color as the walls to give the feeling of greater size. There are two exceptions to this general rule, however. If your room is particularly large, then the different color on the wood will not make the room look small. Secondly, ornately carved woodwork is often emphasized by enamelling it in a color different from the walls. CHOOSING COLORS Just as you choose your wardrobe colors to compliment your
i hair and complexion, select wall colors the same way. A redhead who likes to dress in light tints of purple will find walls painted that color equafty flattering. A blonde who wears blue because it intensifies the color of her eyes, will find that walls painted blue will give the same effect. TILE WIDELY USED Ceramic tile is being used by American architects and designers in every room of the home, and also on exterior walls and roof decks, terraces and swimming pools in all climates.
