Aaron Signs Braves' Pact For $55,000 By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and Hank Aaron, three pretty fair country outfielders, popped up simultaneously today—not on the field but in the news. Williams, the retired 44-year-old Red Sox slugger, predicted Dick Stuart would hit 35 to 40 homers for Boston this year, then really raised some eyebrows by saying he gets along swell with baseball writers. The 48-year-old DiMag, also retired, cheerfully agreed to serve as special batting instructor at the New York Yankees’ advance training camp in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the third straight spring. And Aaron, 28, and still plenty active, signed the 10th contract of his career with Milwaukee for an estimated $55,000. Williams, speaking at the New England Sportsman’s show in Boston, said he missed baseball “and the only time I see it now is on television.” Made Good Deal He said he has “always been impressed with Stuart” and thinks the Red Sox made a wise move in getting him from Pittsburgh. The real eye-opener, however, came when someone put a blunt question to him about his relations with sports writers. “I get along with baseball writers,” Ted said. “I’m a likeable, ethical guy. I only got hot under the collar when somebody tried to put me on die spot.” In addition to their announcement on DiMaggio, the Yankees also revealed veteran Yogi Berra will serve as a combination play-er-coach next season and that he signed for the same salary as last year, about $45,000. Shortstop Tony Kubek also has agreed to terms. Aaron, who batted .323 last season. hit 45 homers and drove in 128 runs, came to terms after a brief conference with club President Johnny McHale. He was the 13th Milwaukee player to sign his contract. Plenty of Signings There was plenty of other signing activity among the other major league clubs also. Leon Wagner received a substantial pay raise from the Los Angeles Angels, bringing him into the $30,000-535,000 bracket. He got the boost not because of his .268 average but because he hit 37 homers and knocked in 107 runs. The Chicago Cubs reported 28 players under contract and only 11 more to go with the signing of southpaw pitcher Dick Ellsworth and right-hander Paul Tbth. Across town, the White Sox signed

Junior High Loses To New Haven Five The Decatur junior high team lost a 31-26 decision to New Haven Thursday afternoon in the Decatur gymnasium. Again, it was a poor first period that cost the Decatur team its chances for victory. New Haven jumped into an 11-4 lead and Decatur could never again quite catch up. The visitors held an 18-11 halftime lead, and a 26-21 three-quarters advantage. Lewis and Goldthwaits of New Haven scored 11 and 10 points respectively, while Nick Smitley led Decatur’s scoring with nine tallies. Wrestlers Are Handed Third Season Loss The Decatur high school wrestlers suffered their third loss of the season Thursday night, dropping a 32-11 decision to New Haven in a listless performance. 1 The Decatur lads showed none of their usual “fire" and hard work, and were easy victims for the Allen county squad, who had defeated the local by only 25-23 in an earlier season match at New Haven, when three Dcatur regulars were out of action. After Decatur’s “talented trio,” Mark Corral, Dave Adams and Alan Kalver had finished their matches, all winning, Decatur could garner only two points through the final nine matches. Corral chalked up victory number eight without a loss when he decisioned Hetrick’ of New Haven, 4-2, in the 95-pound class. Adams won a 6-2 decision over R. Charleston in the 103-pound division, and Kalver followed with a 4-0 outpointing of B. Charleston in the 112-pound weight. Both Adams and Kalver rung up their eight wins of the season as against only one loss apiece. Own Ftae Records Corral, Adams and Kalver now have a total won-loss record of 242 for the season for coach Gary Giessler, and all three have blue ribbons first place in the recent New Haven tournament. After these boys were finished, however, and had build up a 9-0 lead for their team, it was all New Haven. The visitors copped eight of the next nine matcher, three by pins. Deane Lehman was the only other Decatur grappler to score, fighting to a scoreless tie with Hobbs of New Haven, giving each of their teams two points, Gary Myers was pinned by Voigt of New Haven in the third period of their 120-pound clash, and Manny Ybarra and Roger Conrad dropped close decisions. Ybara lost a 2-0 decision, and Conrad was beaten by 3-2. Take Lead Kenny Hill started out in good fashion in the 138-pound division, but lost four points in the third period for a 4-0 loss, and Sam Baumann was decisioned 4-0 by Osdale for his fourth loss in the last five matches. Lee of the visitors pinned Steve Mcßride of Decatur in the first period, before Lehman and Hobbs fought to ttjeir draw. Larry Reinking dropped a 3-2 decision to Fox of New Haven in the 180pound class. Both Lehman and Reinking had pinned the same opponents in the first period in the previous match at New Haven. Huge Gulyas of New Haven, one of the state’s best, finished the easy win for his team when he pinned freshman Terry Smitley of Decatur in only 33 seconds in - _ - ---- — . riman 175-151-170 ( 496).
