Monmouth Eagles Win County Tourney Championship
Defeat Pleasant Mills In Championship Game; Semi - Finals Thrillers
By Pete Reynolds The Monmouth Eagles won thenfirst county championship since 1956 Saturday night, whipping the outclassed Pleasant Mills Spartans 7937 in the title game of the 1963 tourney at the Adams Central gym. The final game was an anti-cli-max after a pair of squeakers in the Saturday afternoon semi-finals when the Eagles had to battle for their lives to eke out a 56-54 victory over the Adams Central Greyhounds, and the Spartans edged out the Hartford Gorillas, 55-54. Adams Central won consolation honors, defeating Hartford in the preliminary game Saturday night, 69-57. Championship Game The Spartans made a game effort in the finals but had no answer for the high-scoring Eagels. Neither team could hit in the first minute and a half until Don Brown connected for the Eagles. Bob McMillen matched this fielder 30 seconds later, but two quick buckets by Clarence Scheumann sent the Eagles winging away, Monmout hheld only an eightpoint margin, 18-10, at the first quarter, but the Eagles tickled the meshes for 27 points in the second period to only nine for the Spartans, and the eventual champions rolled up a 45-19 bulge at the half. Monmouth further extended its lead to 6528 at the third quarter. Don Brown topped all scorers with 20 points, with Dennie Braun and Dean Schieferstein each chipping in with 18. Dave Currie tallied 12 and Gary Clouse 11 for the Spartans. Consolation TiK The Adams Central Greyhounds overcame a half-time deficit of two points to take third place honors from the Hartford Gorillas, 69-57, in the consolation game preceding the final contest. The Greyhounds held a six-point „_niargn_jrf_ls4> at the first quarter, but the Gorillas ripped in 23 points in the second period and took a 32-80 edge to the dressing room at the half. The Greyhounds, led by Gary Workinger’s 10 points, came back to carry a 50-46 advantage into the final eight minutes of play and pulled away in the closing period for the 12point victory. Don Sharp topped the Greyhounds with 20 points, followed by Workinger’s 10 and 10 by Art Ringger. Ron Habegger was the outstanding scorer in defeat as he poured in 25 points, including all 11 which the Gorillas counted in the fourth quarter. Loren Wanner added 12 to the Hartford total. Eagles Win Scorcher Saturday's first semi-final was a real cliff hanger, with the Eagles and Greyhounds never separated by more than five points, and the Eagles forced to come from behind in the closing minutes to MASONIC Entered Apprentice Meeting TUESDAY 7:00 P. The Greyhounds took the lead for the first time with 1:50 to go in the second ’ quarter on Don Sharp’s fourth fielder of the game, 22-21. Adagns Central's margin was boosted ' to five points, 28-23, as Ed Hirschy let fly with a one-hander c from near the center circle, with 1 the ball still in flight when the buzzer sounded. t The Eagles battled back to a s 36-36 tie with 4:44 to go in the I third bracket. The Greyhounds • again built their lead back to five > at 41-36, but the Eagles staged a s counter-rally and knotted the I count at 41-41 with 50 seconds to I play. Sharp and Brown exchanged three-point plays, and Don Egly ■ hit from the field for a 46-44 Adi ams Central lead at the end of the • quarter. , > The Greyhounds had their advantage back up to five, 52-47, exactly at the midway point of the ; closing stanza, but Brown convert- ; ed a pair of free throws, and . came back with two field goals , and the Eagles had regained the . lead, 53-52, for keeps. Gene Bienz tossed in a free throw on ; Ed Hirschy's fifth personal foul, ’ and Dennie Braun added a pair J mouth lead with 36 seconds to ; play. Egly hit from the field with ; ' 25 seconds to go to cut the Mon- ] . mouth lead to two points, 56-54. ] The Greyhounds had one more chance when the Eagles threw the ball away with 16 seconds to go, but the Greyhounds lost the bail without a shot. ] The B-boys led all the scorers in ] this game, Don Brown tallying 21 1 and Dennie Braun 19. Ed Hir- J schy topped Adams Central with I 15, Don Sharp counted 13 and j Gary Workinger 10. Spartans Edge Through , The Spartans, after leading throughout the entire first half in the second semi-final tilt, saw the Gorillas work into a 46-46 tie at the third period, but the Spartans came back to win the squeaker in the final seconds of play, 55-54. Jerry Alberson drew first blood I for Hartford with a free throw, B but Gary Clouse's fielder after 50 C seconds of play sent the Spar- C tans ahead. They moved to a B five-point lead at 8-3, and after I Hartford evened the score at 9-9 S I with 2:10 to go, Clouse hit a field I goal and two free throws and Dave Myers a fielder for a 15-9 Pleasant Mills lead at the end of the period. V The Spartans led by 11 points 1 after three minutes of the second B quarter, but the Gorillas narrow- A ed the margin to seven points, 35 S 28, at the half. The Gorillas, who played the en-
tire game without a substitution, whipped in 18 ponts in the third quarter to only 11 for the Spartans, and the teams were tied, 45 46, entering the final eight minutes of play. Dave Fox’ foul toss opening the final period was overmatched by Dave Myers’ field goal. The teams played it cautiously and were all knotted at 52-52 on Ron Habegger’s three-point play with 4:16 to go. The teams took turns holding up the ball for almost four minutes. With 35 seconds to play, Dave Myers stole the ball from a Hartford dribbler and was fouled. He made his first free throw but missed the second attempt and Hartford gained possession. A Gorilla shot missed with nine seconds to play, the Archers took the ball and Dave Currie was immediately fouled. The little Archer guard sank both foul chances to ice the contest, and the Spartans permited Fox to drive under for an easy layup just before the final buzzer sounded . Jerry Alberson, of Hartford, was the top scorer with 22 points Habegger adding 13 and Fox 12. Currie topped Pleasant Mills with 15 and Gary Clouse tallied 13.
