IN ekeing out the afternoon triumph over the much-improved Adams Central Greyhounds, the Eagles hit 22 fielders in 53 shots, ■ pace—just- -sKghtiy- - higher than Adams Central’s 24 of 58, a .414 mark. The Spartans shot at a .339 clip, 19 of 56, in defeating Hartford center, who hit 22 field-ers-in 62 'shots, a .355 mark. However, the Pleasant Mills boys could hit only 12 buckets in 61 shots at night, a frigid .197. AS usual, the “B-Boys” led the Eagle shooting parade. Don Brown, one. of the finest ball players in Adams county history, hit 8 of 18 against Adams Central and 7 of 12 against Pleasant Mills, for a total of 15 two-pointers in only 30 attempts, an exact .500 : percentage; Denny Braun, not as spectacular as his partner, but equally as tremendous, hit 8 of 12 against the Greyhounds and 8 of 19 in the evening, for a total of 16 for 31, which figures out to a spectacular .516 pace. DEAN Schieferstein, whose tremendous improvement'this season has greatly enhanced the potential of the Eagle quintet, came up with a 9 for 22 total at night, for a .409 percentage. DAVE Currie was the top Spartan shooter in the afternoon, 5 of 12, and rugged Gary Clouse hit 5 of 16. The other afternoon loser, Hartford, also won the backboard battle in their game. The Gorillas grabbed 15 offensive and 18 defep- ' sive rebounds, as compared to Pleasant Mills’ 12 offensive and 17 defensive. SCHIEFERSTEIN set a high water mark for individual rebounding in the tourney when he picked off 17 caroms in the title game Saturday night, eight offensively and nine defensively. Gary Clouse, a rugged junior rebounded for the Spartans, hauled down 16 in the same contest, nine offensively. GARY Workinger, the fine Greyhound center, completely dominated the boards in the afternoon game, one of the major factors in the near upset. Workinger grabbed 13 in all, eight of them defensively. Brown and Braun were tops for the Eagles in that game with nine and seven, respectively. CLOUSE picked off 12 in the afternoon session to go with his 16 in the evening. WHILE Monmouth gets the biggest trophy and the “bouquets," we would like to throw some of those “bouquets” the way of Pleasant Mills and Adams Central. The young Spartans, with Currie and Dave Myers the only seniors on the team, should continue to improve the rest of the season, and could be very tough next year. The Greyhounds, with whom coach Carl Honaker has done a terrific job, will also continue to improve, and will be a strong darkhorse for sectional tourney honors in six weeks. —oOo—- — recipients of ‘bouquets’ should be Rev.
