r- ” more than the work itself costs. The covering up of old siding with modern shingles that never require painting and premanently retain their factory - fresh colors
is not as expensive as many home-owners think. Where siding is in (dace, guides already exist for the installer, and he can place the new siding over the old without undue measuring for size.' Installation of such new siding will also provide added insulation. It will create dead air space between the two sidings, forming a buffer against the entry of cold air into the house in the winter and hot air during the summer. However, much of the value of new siding will be minimized unless you update the rest of your exterior at the same time. The part of the foundation wall above ground should be painted the same color as the siding so as to blend in with the over-all color scheme of the house. A battered or ill-fitting wooden hatchway covering the steps from the basement will also detract greatly from the beauty of the siding job. Replacing an old wood hatchway with a modern steel unit will enhance the attractiveness of the entire wall. Just as the installation of new wall shingles is a job any homeowner with average handyman skills can undertake, and so too is removing an old hatchway and re placing it with a modern Bilco unit. In most cases, one man can remove the wooden hatch and install a new steel unit in half a day. The steel hatch can be assembled in about ten minutes and can be quickly bolted in place over the wall of the stairs to the basement. The end of the unit which meets the wall of the house can be caulked in another hour — The hatchway is treated with a baked-on prime finish at the factory. After being put into place, it can be painted the same color as your shingles. A good grade of metal enamel with an alkyd base is recommended. Complete instructions are contained in a folder, “How to Replace Yo u r Worn-Out Wood Hatchway,” which is available at most building supply dealers. After replacing your old wood hatchway with a steel unit, spend a little time sprucing up the lawn and grounds around the house. Shrubs against the foundation, flowers, or a well-kept lawn all set off the house and make it more attractive. SEAL THE BACKS To prevent wood panels from warping, it is important that the backs be sealed with a quality primer - sealer or with varnish. This will prevent the panels from absorbing moisture and is particularly important when the panels are installed in damp basements. Seal all edges at the same time. BUILDERS PUN HOMES ‘ WITH HOUSEWIFE IH MIND
“A home should be designed so that its principal user, the mother, can use its facilities with the least amount of effort on her pert.” > ■ This is the view of Eugene A. Gulledge, a member of the design subcommittee of the National Association of Home Builders, and a home builder of Greensboro. N. C. Gulledge said the home should be planned so that a mother can do her work and supervise, the children at the same time. “That’s why we design homes with the kitchen in the rear — so that a mother can do her work there while keeping an eye on the children playing in the yard at the back of the house. > “It is also why dens and recreation rooms so often are in the rear of the house. Chances are that while these rooms are in use, there is some activity going on outside . Much the same reasoning governs the location of the utility area. Builders put it near the kitchen so that a housewife can do two things at once if she wishes, such as having the laundry going while she is cooking or washing dishes.” Gulledge said that builders consider good design from the standpoint of the interior as well as the exterior of a home. He explained:
I i&H Time-and-methods study experts analyze the work involved in pouring a concrete house foundation as part of the National Association of Home Builders’ TAMAP Project (Time And Methods Study Analysis Program). This home, in Berea, Ohio, marks the first intensive use of industrial engineering techniques in home building. For every worker there is an analyst making stopwatch-timed records of his every move. The project is aimed at further increasing the efficiency of home building operations. « 2___ 1 4 * " ■ - —. ■ H 1 di 7 Th 8 H Li [W * ®Si i 1 bhßs mßhsl S j 1I - mi •' Brit THE EYE-CATCHING FRAME on this ParaDel-O-Plate mirror adds a decorative note to the room by focusing attention on the 4 reflection in the plate glass surface and away from the expanse of blank wall. “As far as the interior is concerned, you want a workable plan that will give you a good traffic pattern, good use of the home, and that will provide a separation of activities. You need a quiet , area for sleeping. The living area, which of course will be noisier, should be separated from the sleeping area. A good plan must allow the maximum use of space m a house with the least interference by one area of another.” He said that it is such things as these that builders keep in mind in drawing floor plans. Gulledge added that good de- ' sign takes advantage oif the land, la his own area, the la n d is hilly. He locates the driveway on the high side of the lot and puts the kitchen on that side, so ' that fewer steps are needed to ' get from driveway to the house. As far as the exterior of a house is concerned, Gulledge said that regardless of its style, it should ; have "curb appeal” — it should ' look attractive trom the street. Factors contributing to curb ap- , peal include harmony between the , house and landscape. The two : should "go together.” The house should fit in, too, with other . homes in the neighborhood. It ■ should be distinctive but not > 2‘odd.” Home Builders also consider

Cold Weather’s 'Hot 9 Purchase Is Cool Comfort Winter’s a good time to shop for summer comfort. One or more electric room air conditioners installed during the offseason will prepare a family for those surprisingly sultry spring days that often arrive long before summer’s hot, humid weather sets in. Families who buy room air conditioners early can enjoy the advantage of leisurely shopping. This means they can be sure of getting the model they want. If it isn’t in stock, there’s time to wait until the dealer can get it for them. Although many room air conHitinnxra can be installed easily by the average home owner, some units—particularly through-the-wall models—do require installation by trained, mechanics. During the off-season this can be done at the home owner’s convenience. During a heat-wave, he may have to simmer until the mechanics are available. Many families who install room air conditioners during the winter make good use of them before the snow melts.
