Assembly May Seal Fate Os Politicians By EUGENE J. CADOU United Press International INDIANAPOLIS (UPD — The ’ fate of a number of ambitious politicians may be determined by happenings in the Indiana LegisAture which begins its 61-day session Thursday. Affected are Governor Welsh, who lost his hope for a Demo-cratic-controlled Legislature; Lt. Gov. Richard O. Ristine, leading candidate for the Republican gubernatorial nomination; Senate President Pro Tern D. Russell Bontrager, chief aspirant for the GOP senatorial nomination, and Sen. Marshall Kizer, Democratic floor leader, a possible gubernatorial hopeful Welsh will be at the end of his political rope when he leaves office early in 1965 because he cannot succeed himself, unless he obtains an important post in Washington, a not unlikely event, or decides to chaHenge Sen,-Vance Harare tbr rfehtimmaudn, a tough task for anyone. The governor is seeking to avoid the blame for any tax hike, which seems inevitable, although the Republican chiefs are gleeful that he already is on record as suggesting the cigarette tax be doubled to finance the Indiana port, building two bridges and helping the Conservation Department. Ristine Worries Ristine worries night and day about the shaky control of the Senate by the Republicans. He needs at least one Democratic vote to enact any GOP measure and is perturbed also about the activities of half a dozen rebel senators of his own party. In the offing also is the possibility of a gubernatorial bid by Atty. Gen. Edwin Steers or another member of the faction of former Sen. William E. Jenner. Bontrager likewise is affected by the doubtful GOP control of the Senate in which he is his party’s floor leader. He will have to be mighty fast on his feet to place the blame for higher taxes on the Democrats. Kizer also has his troubles with 24 Democrats compared to 25 Republicans in the upper house. He likewise must battle against Dem? ocratic blame for the probable tax hike. Capehart Welcome Former Sen. Homer E. Capehart will be honored with a “welcome home party” in Washington, his home town, Saturday night. Citizens of both Republican and Democratic parties will pay tribute to the victim of an upset defeat by Democratic Sen. Birch E. Bayh, Jr. “No state political leaders have been invited—this is a non-parti-san greeting,” said Ralph G. Hastings, realtor and insurance man, who will be chairman of the meeting. Speakers will include three former Washington residents—US. Appellate Court Judge John S. Hastings, Chicago; C. Walter McCarty, editor of the Indianapolis News, and Eugene J. Cadou, political writer for United Press International. , Capehwt has announced he will spend most of his time at his farm near Washington and in Indianapolis where he has business Volunteers To Aid In Space Project CAMBRIDGE, Mass. lUPD — Local volunteers in the Midwest will participate in an outer space research project, according to officials at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Sixteen meteorite monitoring stations will be set up in an effort to locate and recover meteorites soon after they come to earth. The project is being directed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory tinder a contract with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. . Scientists believe that what happens to meteorites as they travel through space is essentially the same thing that will happen to space ships. "If we can locate the fragments, and make a study of them soon enough, we may be able to learn more about what is. going to happen to our space ships,” an official said. Recovering the meteorites that come to earth as soon as possible is important, officials said, because much of the information is derived from radioactive effects which die quickly once the- fragments land. Four of the tracking stations will be constructed in Nebraska. They will be located in Steinauer, Alma, Neligh, and Mullen. Each station will consist of a small building equipped with four cameras, pointed north, east, south and west, and a battery of automatic control equipment. Similar stations will be located in Havana, lIL, Milan and Rolla, Mo., Vinton and Carroll, lowa, Dlandreau and Reliance, S.D., McPherson, Pleasanton and Garden City, Ka., and in Woodward and Hominy, Okla.
