Bears Defeat Auburn, 11th Straight Win The Berne Bears celebrated their school's annual homecoming Saturday afternoon by racking up their 11th victory without a loss, defeating the Auburn Red Devils, 65-60. It was a close battle all the way. Berne led by a narrow two-point margin at the first quarter, 17-15, but the Red Devils knotted the score at 38-38 at the half. The Bears went back on top by three points,so-47 at the end of the third period, and managed to keep control the rest of the way. Erv Inniger topped the Bears with 34 points, 24 of them in the first half. Kent Ringger added 11 and Karl Kingsley 10, Shafer led Auburn with 20 points and D. Cochard tallied 15. Hornsby Funeral Services Tuesday CHICAGO (UPD — The body of Rogers Hornsby, the man the late John McGraw called “better than Babe Ruth,’’ will lie in state tonight at a North Side mortuary. Funeral services were scheduled at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Drake & Sons mortuary chapel. The body will be taken to Hornsby’s old home town, Hornsby’s Bend, Tex., near Austin, for burial Thursday. Hornsby, greatest right handed hitter, who set the modern major league batting record of .424 in 1924, died Saturday of a heart attack while apparently recovering at a hospital from eye surgery and a stroke. Hornsby was an active player in the majors leagues from 1915 to 1937 with the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants, Boston Braves, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Browns. He managed the Cardinals, Braves, Cubs, Browns and Cincinnati Reds along with five minor league clubs. Last season he was batting coach of the New York Mets. f Hornsby was batting champion seven times and hit over .400 three times. He had a lifetime average of .358, and a career mark of 302 homers. A rousing third-quarter scoring burst carried the Monmouth Eagles to their 10th victory in 11 games Saturday night, as they whipped Fort Wayne Bishop Luers, 79-53, at the Monmouth gym. It was the second 26-point win of the season for the Eagles over the Fort Wayne team, as Monmouth Luers by an 80-54 score in the finals of the Luers holiday tourney. The teams were tied at 15-15 at the first quarter, and Monmouth held only a scant one-point advantage. 35-34, at the half. But the Eagles poured 27 points through the hoop in the third quarter to only 10 for the Knights, and the Eagles carried a 62-44 advantage into the final period, Don Brown topped the Eagles with 33 points. Dean Schieferstein added 17 and Dennis Braun 13. Tom Blaising was high for Luers with 14, and J. W. Freiburger and Jim Still each added 10. The Eagles will play the Decatur Commodores in the county tourney opener at Adams Central at 7 p.m. Thursday.
