Yellow Jackets Drop Rugged, Close Battle To New Haven Friday

By Pete Reynolds Decatur’s Yellow Jackets and New Haven’s Bulldogs waged rugged warfare at the Decatur gym Friday night, and when the heat of battle had ended, the Bulldogs walked off the floor with a 65-56 victory in a Northeastern Indiana conference contest. It was pretty much a parade to the foul lines, with the officials blowing 53 personal fouls, 32 of them in the first half. The Jackets lost five players on fouls, three of them within space of 51 seconds midway through the final quarter. The teams were all even from the field with 19 two-pointers each, but the Bulldogs converted 27 of 45 free throws to only 18 of 31 for the Jackets, as 31 fouls were called on Decatur and 22 on New Haven, who lost one player. For the Jackets, it was thenninth defeat in 11 starts, and their fourth without a win in conference play. The Bulldogs have won three of four in the NEIC. Close Straggle Bill McColly’s lads put up a real battle against the heavily favored Bulldogs of Norm Ellenberger. The Jackets took ah early--3-2 lead but New Haven started rolling and led by 11 points at 2110 with only a minute of the first, quarter to go but the Jackets sliced • the margin to 22-14 at the end of the period. New Haven still clung to that eight-point lead well into the second period, but the Jackets cut their deficit to four points, 35-31, at the half. Buckets by Tom Maddox and Martin pulled the Jackets even at 35-35 in the first 45 seconds of the third period. Big John Schmutz hit for the Bulldogs but Maddox and Martin each hit again and Decatur had a 39-37 lead. Decatur had its advantage up to six points at 48-42 with two minutes to go, but the Bulldogs trimmed that lead to only a pair, 50-48, at the end of the bracket. New Haven scored the first six points of the fourth period to move into a 54-50 margin but Gregg Ladd’s two-pointer put the Jackets back within two points with 5:50 to play. But Gregg Ladd, Bob McClure and Tom Maddox all fouled out within 51 seconds and New Haven slowly pulled away for the final nine-point victory. Commodores Winners Over Monroeville By 56-51 Friday Night

By Bob Shraluka Sparked by the one-two punch cd Ed Kohne and Larry Hake, the Decatur Catholic Commodores chalked up their third consecutive victory and sixth of the season at the expense of the Monroeville Cubs Friday night, taking a hardfought 56-51 triumph on the Allen county floor. The Commodores will enter the county tourney Thursday night with a six win, four loss record, and three wins in a row, when they collide with the high-scoring Eagles of Monmouth, the last team to send the Commodores down to defeat. Taking the lead midway in the third quarter, the local quintet never again trailed, although the Cubs made things exciting in the closing minutes of the struggle. Take Lead Kohne, the talented junior forward who is really coming into his own, gave his team a 34-33 lead at the 4:13 mark of period three when he converted a three-point play. Holding a 37-34 lead late in the quarter, the green and in eight points in the final minute and 34 seconds of the period, giving themselves some breathing room and a 45-36 lead entering the final eight minutes. The largest lead either team had enjoyed with three points until Larry Hake hit a pair of buckets, and Kohne and Mike Baker one apiece, to move toe Commodores into the nine-point bulge after three quarters. ‘ Cot Margin The Cubs cut the margin to 4844 early in the final period, but a basket and a pair of charity tosses by Kohne upped the margin once again. The Monroeville lads threatened once more when a pair of charity tosses by Kohne upped file margin once again. The Monroeville lads threatened once more when a pair of two pointers by McIntosh narrowed the gap to 52-49 with 2:03 to play. Hake popped in a jump shot from 12 feet out, however, and the Commodores coasted home free. Neither team could gain much of an advantage in the first half. The Cube led the early part of the opening period and the two teams were tied starting the second quarter. Adams Central Winner Friday By 59-56 Score The Adams Central Greyhounds made it all even on the season Friday night, edging Churubusco, 59-56, at the Adams Central gym, for the fifth victory for the Greyhounds, equaling their lost record. Churubusco held a narrow lead until the final quarter. The visitors were on top at the first quarter, 15-14, at the half, 30-28, and at the third period, 46-43. But the Greyhounds moved out in front with three minutes to go and kept control of the game. Gary Workinger led the Greyhound’s attack with IB points, and ' Don Sharp added 12.
