Sources in the capital said the White House may seek antistrike legislation unless the 14-day-oki strike is not settled quickly. In Galveston, Tex., the International Longshoremen’s Association was under a court order to unload bananas from two ships scheduled to dock within a week. The Southern Banana Association sought the order against ILA Local 1576 saying the union signed a contract for the unloading on Dec. 28. Conflicting statements by union officials cast a shadow of uncertainty over prospects for a regional settlement of the strike from Miami to Galveston, Tex. Friday, Ralph Massey, director Os the ILA’s gulf district, 'said new proposals would be presented to shippers in four cities in his area on Monday. But another union official said that while Massey “may present some kind of proposal in Texas,” it would be binding only on workers in Galveston. The reports that Kennedy might seek legislative action brought angry criticism from union officials as they prepared to resume bargaining talks here this afternoon. Referring to the possibility of new laws to curb strikes, ILA Executive Vice President Thomas W. Gleason declared: * “When this comes in, we will have fixed prices in this industry. We will lose the right to strike and Khrushchev will be right in the middle of us.” He accused the shippers of “stalling” in contract talks to aid chances of putting “anti-labor legislation” through Congress. Bosse Scores Easy Victory Friday Night INDIANAPOLIS (UPD— Evansville Bosse, hoping to retain its position atop the Indiana high school basketball rankings, got the second half of the season off to an auspicious start Friday night with an easy 74-37 victory over Jasper. Bosse, paced by Dave Riggs with 24 points, had little trouble with Jasper which had proved something of a giant-killer earlier ip the season. The Bulldogs rolled up a 37-17 halftime lead and increased the margin to 53-17 at one point in the third quarter. Only three other members of the top 10 saw action Friday night but one of them — 10thranked Lafayette—ran into trouble. Indianapolis Attucks, a shadow of the power it has been in recent years, upended the Bronchos, 59-51, for its fourth win in seven starts. It was Lafayette’s second loss in 10 games. Second-ranked Anderson easily handled city foe Madison Heights, 77-61, while sixth-ranked East Chicago Washington downed East Chicago Roosevelt, 70-59. Three more of the top 10 will see action tonight. Indianapolis Tech, No. 7, will be at Madison; Gary Roosevelt, No. 8, at Elkhart; and Columbus, No. 9, will entertain once - beaten Indianapolis Howe. Third - ranked Michigan City, fourth-ranked Muncie Central and fifth-ranked South Bend Central will resume activity next week. Unbeaten but unranked Indianapolis Ripple made it eight in a row with an easy 77-65 victory over crippled Southport. Eminence pushed its unbeaten string to 11 games with a 75-47 victory over Cloverdale. Noblesville, paced by a 41-point performance by Gary Cox, pushed its season record to 9-1 with an 85-74 victory over Kokomo, another perennial power which has fallen upon evil days this season. Irvin Cox hit 28 for Kokomo. But the 41 points by Cox was not the night’s best individual performance. Dan Weiland of Lima hit 46 as his team bowed to Cromwell, 87-86, in two overtimes. In general, it was a big night for the hot shooters with several players going over 30 points. Ralph Seibel scored 36 to lead Greensburg over Connersville, 7565, and avenge a loss to Connersville in a holiday tourney earlier this week. And John Jones of East Gary ran his total for 11 games to 313 points with 36 in a losing cause as Griffith downed East Gary, 86-64. Bobby Smock hit 31 points to lead Hebron over Wheatfield, 6140, and Keith King had 30 as Morgan Twp. of Porter County downed Hammond Gavit, 93-69. Ron McMains scored 31 to lead Frankfort over Clinton Central, 65-50, and Mike Brunner had the same number for Shelbyville in a 65-60 victory over Martinsville. ’ Winter Storm Moves Into Midwest Area By United Press international A winter storm bearing high winds, snow ad freezing rain advanced slowly into the Midwest from the Rocky Mountains today. Heavy snow warnings U-ere posted for portions of Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Freezing rain was expected to extend as far east as Illinois. Colorado and Wyoming Friday received their first heavy snowfall of the year, with three to six inches of new snow on the ground. Sidney, Neb., received three inches of snow and four inches fell in the Colby, Kan., area. The Plains states were warned to prepare for up to four inches of snow buffeted by 25 to 40 mile an hour winds today. The Weather Bureau said the storm was complex in nature and its exact course or severity could not be determined until later. Fog hung over the southern Plains. Airports at Oklahoma City and Kansas City, Mo., were locked juj. To the west of the storm system skies were generally fair. Light snow fell over the Dakotas and western Minnesota. Decorating Hint If one of your rooms has some architectural eyesores, such as beams that jut out, paint the walls and woodwork (doors, windowframes, baseboards, molding, etc.) all in one color. Or, if you use wallpaper, select one that has an all-over pattern, but is not striped. This will camouflage the structural faults in your room. the New York Shipping Association, said “We-aren’t backing any anti-labor legislation.”
Question, Answer Column Favorite By DICK WEST United Press International - WASHINGTON (UPI) — Just about my favorite feature in the periodical field is a question-and-answer column appearing in one of the weekly magazines. Readers who “want to know the truth about prominent personalities” are invited to write in and ask about it and the magazine will undertake to straighten them out. The answers invariably supply a nugget or two of information that I find gratifying. In a recent issue, for instance, I learned that there is no law against Zsa Zsa Gabor giving- her age as 37 when she gets married. What mainly intrigues me, however, are not the answers but the questions. I find myselfsimply dying to hnoy.. what caused them to come up in the first place. Question About Presidents The same issue that absolved Miss Gabor of felonious conduct in the listing of her age contained this question submitted, by a man living in Washington: “Is it true that Harry Truman is the only non-millionaire to have occupied the White House in the last 40 years?” I couldn’t help but wonder what sparked his curiosity on that point and why he specified 40 years rather than, say,. 50 years. My guess is that it stemmed from an argument with his wife. Another question was “who is richer—Lucille Ball or Loretta Young?” For the record, Loretta is, but neither ever occupied the White House. The question that really tied me in knots came from a person in Northridge, Calif., identified only by the initials “F.T.” ‘"liiree years ago Alan Jay Lerner, who wrote the lyrics for ‘My Fair Lady,’ wrote a situation comedy series for TV called ‘Harry’s Girls,”’ he observed. “What happened to it?” Like to Know Identity I’d give a pretty to know who “F.T.” is. Why should he or she be concerned about a TV show that has been gathering dust for three years? The only conclusion I can reach is that “F.T.” is Lerner’s manager, or his press agent, or maybe his wife or mother. The magazine answered the question thusly: “MGM was unable to sell it for years. Recently, however, there’s been talk that Colgate has bought the series for airing next year.” That could mean that “F.T.” is an MGM vice president who is sending up a trial balloon. Or it could mean that he is a member of the advertising agency handling the Colgate account. At any rate, as I’m sure you’ll agree, Q.&A. of this iype is stimulating reading. I can hardly wait for the next issue to come out.
