The world’s foremost amajeur tennis stars needed only 69 nitoutes to subdue Dafael Osuna and Antonio Palafox, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4, in the challenge round doubles match and give Australia an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Emerson actually outshone Laver, the grand slam king of the courts who reportedly will turn professional at the conclusion of Friday’s final and meaningless singles matches. “Roy played terrific tennis,” said Aussie captain Harry Hopman, whose teams now have won 11 of the last 13 challenge rounds. Hopman added that Laver “didn’t play so well,” but it didn’t matter too much considering the heights Emerson reached. Jaunty Roy scored 20 key placements and added 15 winning volleys.
Y. A. Tittle Is Honored As Player Os Year NEW YORK (UPD—Y.A. Tittle of the New York Giants, only two years ago on the scrap heap of pro football, today was voted United Press International Play-er-of-the-Year for’ the 1962 National Football League season. The Giants to a man agree that they could not have won the Eastern Division title in the NFL this season were it not for their bald 36-year-old quarterback. Tittle set a league record by I throwing 33 touchdown passes, in addition to. providing the brainy play-calling and inspired leader- . ship requisite of a championship quii-teSaCk. 4 Carries Ball j And despite his advanced age, 1 he risked his limbs by carrying ] the ball 17 times, averaging 6.4 < yards per rush and scoring a pair ] of important touchdowns. < Tittle won the honor by a close j margin over fullback Jim - Taylor of the Green Bay Packers. Tittle : received 19 votes and Taylor 17 j in a poll of 42 writers who cov- j ered the NFL campaign. Taylor j had much- the better of it in last J year’s 37-0 Green Bay rout as 1 Tittle had a lack-luster game. Seeks First Title “If we can win next Sunday, it will be the greatest thrill of my ‘ lifetime,’’ says Tittle. Some Pike Caught: At Rainbow Some rather small pike are being taken through the ice on Rainbow Lake near Geneva, Jack Hurst, district conservation officer, said today. The pike, not as large as the 27-inchers taken last summer, have been in the 20-22 inch range. - -—- Several people have inquired about shelters or small wooden houses on the ice, Hurst said, and last week someone erected a three-sided windbreak. It is now legal to build ice houses, but they must have the owner’s' name and address on them, and they must be- removed before the spring thaw. They also must be built so they can be ifispected by the conservation officer, he said. Ice skating is more popular than ice fishing on the lake, Hurst added, with many adults as well as children taking part. career, however, that he was named UPI Player-of the-Year in the NFL.
