St. Francis of Assisi Originator A of Church Christmas Carol Singing
Regardless of the derivation, it was St. Francis of Assisi who was credited with having given popularity to carol singing when he is said to-have conducted a Christmas service singing the Gospel and giving a sermon in song. When minstrels and folk singing swept the land back in Richard the Lion-Heart-ed’s day, carols were kept alive through the simple folk in community after community, who passed them down from generation to generation. But it was not until the 15th Century when the custom finally broke away from the austerity and sombre chants of the Church and reached its popularity and mag-
Business Booms At New Playboy Club By JACK GAVER United Press International NEW'YORK (UPI) — Bunnies bear brunt but bustle busily while puzzled professional perfortfiers ponder peculiar predicament. That, in an alliterative nutshell, is the way things stand today with the much-publicized $4 million Playboy Club that just barely got a state liquor license in time for‘its Dec. 8 opening and still lacks a cabaret license that would permit it to offer entertainment. Meanwhile: ‘‘We’re handling 3,000 customers a day and business is booming,” said Victor Lownes 111 of Chicago, public relations man who came out of retirement as an official of Playboy magazine and the Playboy clubs to get the New York operation started. Bunnies, for those who are still way back there with Thornton Burgess and Peter and Molly Cottontail, are the pretty, buxom, leggy, and provacatjvely clad girls who serve as waitresses in the country’s six Playboy clubs. They wear tall ears in their coiffeurs and, a large knob of white fur aft the midsection. N.Y. License Commissioner Bernard J. O’Connell, who, so far as club officials know, hasn’t been on the premises, singled out the bunnies Tuesday in rejecting, after several hearings, the club’s petition for the right to have entertainment. The club went to the state Supreme Court Wednesday seeking an order to reverse the commissioner’s ruling. This procedure

nificence. But then came the Puntaps in the 17th Century who sternly forbade joyous celebrations at Christmas, and the singing of carols went into a decline. It wasn’t until the 19th Century before the singing of carols again came into open public popularity. And this was only made possible through the illicit printing and singing of carols in the privacy of the homes of the people who loved them dearly. In 1840, the world famous, “Silent Night” appeared in print, and today its beauty resounds the world over in every Christian land at Christmastime.
will take at laast two weeks, Lownes said. • ‘ The verdict from the license hearing was that “the applicant’s main appbal to its prospective customers is the lure of its scantily clad waitresses” and that impression is created by the club's publicity releases,’ truly or falsely, that they are available to twist with club members at private parties. v Ulis last, Lownes said, is “utterly false,” and the premises are privately policed to insure no violation of the rigid state law against the mingling of employes with guests in such places. A statement by the club’s officials pointed out that: “Gtommissioner ’ O’Connell objects to the bunnies, but, ironically, the ruling only prevents us from presenting singers and comics — that part of our operation that actually -competes with the bunnies for the attention of our patrons. “This ruling does not prevent us fporn having girls in bunny costumes wait on our customers. The Playboy Club is doing capacity business, and the ruling just temporarily inconveniences us. “But it is much more than that to 22 talented comics, singers and other performers who are being denied the right to work.” The various .entertainment rooms are being supplied with background music by pianists and trios which do not come under the classification of “performing entertainment.” I Modem Etiquette | I By Roberta Lee I Q. Must a person who holds a Ph.D. degree always be addressed as “Doctor”? “A. The title of “Doctor” for a Ph.D. is rarely, if ever, used in social circles, unless the affair is in some way associated with the honor he has gained. However, if he uses the degree professionally, he is always Doctor. Q. My wife and my widowed mother have the same name — Mrs. Paul F. Sprague. How can they be distinguished socially and in their correspondence? A. Your mother should have “Sr.” after her name.
