I ’ <1 Jr Wk ' M & L A aM JMr HOLIDAY HARVEST . . . Headed for their few days of glory, hundreds of Christmas trees are stacked on a giant sled by woodsmen on a tree farm near Duluth, Minnesota. The firm ships more than a million and a half black spruce Christmas trees throughout the U.S. and the world. More than 46 million evergreens of all sizes and shapes will be sold in the U.S. this season.
PRESEPIO In sunny Italy, where the Christmas tree is almost unkown, the presepio, or creche, plays an important role in the celebration of the birth of Christ Italian families frequently give over entire rooms of their homes to the presepio. When completed, It may contain as many as a thousand figures. Italian youngsters put their shoes by the fireplace on January 6th, the Night of the Epiphany, instead of op Christmas Eve. That date marks the arrival of “Befana,” the good witch who comes down the chimney on a broom to fill the shoes left out for her. Good children receive candy and gifts; the naughty ones find only coal in their shoes. Feeder in Backyard Helps Share Yule With Birds Share Christmas with the birds. If you have no backyard feeder, trim an outdoor tree for them. Pine cones dipped in suet or peanut butter can be attached to branches. Balls of suet and strings of popcorn or cranberries can be hung from a tree. Bits of apple and grated carrot, even pie crust, dry donuts and crumbs will be welcomed by the birds. A coconut shell shaped as a container holding sunflower and other bird seed can be fixed to a branch. Don’t put the food too far inside a tree or birds may harm their branches while feeding. Once you start feeding birds, keep it up all winter. Provide water, too. Bluejays, woodpeckers, nuthatches, chicadees, warblers and brown creepers are meat eaters. Cardinals, Juncos, sparrows and finches like vegetable seeds.

Cleaning Up After Christmas Is Easy Opening Christmas packages is fun—cleaning up afterward can be quite a chore. So, before Christmas morning, gather together the following simple clean-up materials: 1. Two large shopping bags: one for paper and ribbon you want to keep, and one for scraps to be thrown away. *•' > * 2. Whisk broom and dust pan. (Try tying a pine cone and sprig of holly on these everyday helpers to give them a holiday look). 3. A bottle of pine cleaner with a sponge, for crushed candy cane or spilled beverages. Store your holiday clean-up equipment in one of the shopping bags and tuck away in the closet where you’re hiding Christmas presents. ;WLuw MK3' ~ REAL V.1.P.... Check Evergreens For Diseases Before discarding hemlock and yew used as indoor Christmas greens this season examine the needles. FleCk-size, shell-shaped objects white gray to brown in color may be evidence of fiorina externa scales. These destructive insects are found on the underside of the needles. The male of this pest when abundant give the undersurface of hemlock needles a white wash appearance. This insect usually attacks hemlock but sometimes found on yew. If the greens with this scale were plucked from your garden then steps toward control should be taken next spring. A series of precisely timed sprays will be necessary. If the greens were purchased elsewhere, burn them to be on the safe side.

> SWISS CHRISTMAS Switzerland begins celebration of Christmas on December «, the birthday of St. Nicholas of Myra, the first Santa Clans. Although celebrations are pretty much the same, each village has its own way of celebrating the good Saint’s birth. Typical customs Include beUringing contests and "Sternsingen,” or star singing, caroling under the stars, and the appearance of Christklnd, personified by a girl in snow-white garb, who passes from house to house bearing gifts for little children. Animals In Many Christmas Legends Animals have been featured in many Christmas legends and customs. An old legend says that on Christmas Eve, as beasts kneel in their stalls, they develop the power of speech—and it is a sin for mere mortals to eavesdrop. Each year, according to another legend, barnyard animals indulge in a "Holy Supper” on Christmas Eve, in commemoration of the time they helped spread the Joyful Tidings. In Northern Europe, boys and girls put out food for St. Nicholas’ white horse. In Scandinavian countries even the poor save coins to buy sheaves of wheat and barley and bits of suet to place on roofs or trees for the birds. St. Francis of Assissi gave extra food to domestic animals because he wanted all creation to share in ynletide happiness.
Favorite Carols In Every Country Despite the fact Christmas carols today are heard wherever the holiday is celebrated, no one is quite certain where the word “caYol” originated. Some contend the word comes from a Greek word for flute player, obviously as a compliment to the musicians who played for the Christmas ring-dances. It is also believed to have origin in the songs associated with the Roman Saturnalia. The early carols were sung in Latin. St. Francis of Assissi, who arranged the first Nativity scene, at Greccio, Italy, in 1224, led singing of songs of praise to the Holy Child and sq helped bring carol singing back to popularity after many years of decline. As carol singing spread from country to country, new carols were developed. Today, every Christian country has its own favorite carols. Bees Were First Carolers According To Old Legend An early English legend suggests that bees were the first Christmas carolers, gathering on Christmas Eve to hum carols of praise to the Holy Infant. It is certain that carol popularity was greatly promoted by the English custom of ‘iwassailing” or “gooding” expeditions. Children went from house to house, singing songs and receiving treats. ‘ Traditional songs gave way to new Christmas carols, which themselves became traditional. About the year 1521 Wynkn de Word, an apprentice printer, issued the first book of Christmas carols. Later, carols were so popular that people learned them from printed copies which sold for pennies. Good Health-Idea For Welcome Gift Would you give your family—and yourself—the gift of “guaranteed” good health during the coming year? Wouldn’t this be a wonderful Christmas present? You cannot of course, get 3uch a guarantee, anywhere. But, have you been procrastinating about taking the kids to the doctor for their vaccinations? How long has It been since you have had any , shots? Each year, many children and adults become seriously ill—even die, because they or their parents neglected to take advantage of protective vaccines that have been in common use for many years and are available in every family doctor’s office s For years, diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus have been prevented by a triple vaccine routinely given to babies, A vaccine against polio has been available for several years. Smallpox vaccinatin' has just about wiped out the di tease. The gift of health is available at Christmas—and all year long.
French Reveillon Elaborate Feast In France, where the season’! greeting to "Joyeux Noel,” many homes now have Christmas trees as well as the traditional creche populated with terracotta figures called santons. This custom can be traced back to the 12th century when it took the form of a liturgical drama. Young French children, like children throughout the world, will—or should—be asleep when the adult members of the family return home from Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve. If they happen to be awake, as they often are, they may take part in the Reveillon. This elaborate feast of many courses begins with pate de foie gras and oysters. Roast turkey or goose with all the trimmings follow, along with a variety of complementing cheeses and fruits. Topping off the meal is the traditional buche de Noel, a log-shaped cake with chocolate icing simulating bark. Before retiring for the night, the family places its shoes by the fireplace in anticipation of a visit from "Pere Noel.” ’ TREE HISTORY Everyone has heard the story of how Martin Luther, impressed by the beauty of the heavens and a wintry landscape under star-lit sky, brought a small evergreen into his home and decorated it with lighted candles. Lather lived from 1483 to 1546, in Germany. Until about 1700, it is believed, the Christmas tree custom was confined to the Rhine River district, at which time its popularity began to spread and lights were generally accepted as decorations. It has been established that Hessian soldiers, fighting in the American Revolution, did much to popularize Christmas trees in this country. A description of Christmas festivities at Fort Dearborn, DI., in 1804 mentions a Christmas tree.
