Commodores Win At Lafayette Central Tuesday, 56 To 41
The Decatur Catholic Commodores pulled their record up to the .500 mark Tuesday night, chalking up a 56-41 victory over Lafayette Central on the Priates’ floor. The win gave the Commodores an even .500 mark, fjpr victories and four losses for the campaign. After trailing at the end of the first quarter, the Decatur boys took the lead in the second period and piled up a large lead in the second half, allowing coach George Waning to substitute freely and give some of his underclassmen varsity experience. McClure and Hulvey paced the Pirates to a 12-10 advantage at the conclusion of the first eight minutes of play. The two scored all the team’s points, tallying six apiece. Myers Sparks Team Terry Myers, Commodore sophomore, entered the cointest in the second period and sparked his team to a lead. Myers pumped in a pair of buckets and added three free throws, which combined with two fielders and two charities by Larry Hake, and a basket by Larry Gase, gave the Decatur five a 25-20 margin al the main intermission. The green and gold began ripping the nets in the third quarter, and tallied 18 points, while holding the Pirates to six tallies, which gave the Decatur lads a safe 43Q ; ' - Northwest B Wins City League Game Northwest B defeated Northwest A, 2016, in a city grade school league game Tuesday afternoon at the Northwest gym. The winners led at the first quarter, 7-4, and at the half, 11-6, but the losers pulled into a 14-14 tie at the end of the third period. Subs Freely Coach Waning substituted freely in the last eight minutes, but the Allen county crew could cut only two points off the lead, and the Commodores brought home a 5641 win. Hake paced all scorers, tossing in eight fielders and adding two charity attempts for a total of 18. Myers came up with his biggest scoring output of the campaign, adding 12 tallies, and Dan Lose accounted for nine markers. McClure topped the Pirates’ scoring with 14 points and Bowman added 10. Ten players saw action for Decatur, with nine breaking into the scoring column. The Commodores now rest over the Christmas holidays, before returning to action Friday, December 28, when they entertain Crestview of Ohio at the Decatur gym. Bishop Luers Tourney Draw Is Announced Pairings for the Fort Wayne Bishop Luers tourney, to be held Thursday and Friday, Dec. 27 and 28, were received today by Monmounth school officials. The tourney will open at 7 p.m. Dec. 27, with Arcola playing host Luers, followed by Butler against the Monmouth Eagles. Thursday’s losers will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 28, followed by the championship affair. Tickets, good for both sessions, and priced at $l5O, are now on sale at the Monmouth high school. Single session tickets, at sl, will be on sale only at the Luers gym each night. Nationals Hopeful Injured To Return SYRACUSE, N. Y. (UPI) — The Syracuse Nationals said Tuesday they hoped to have injured players Dolph Schayes, Al Bianchi and Dave Gambee back in National Basketball Association action by the first of the year. Schayes has a bad knee, Bianchi a fractured hand and Gambee a broken bone in his foot. Sparfans Win Tuesday Night Over Ramblers The Pleasant Mills Spartans handed Coach Tom King and their fans ani unexpected Christmas present Tuesday night when the Spartans scored an upset victory over Huntington Catholic, 50-47, at the Pleasant Mills gym. The triumph was the second in a row for the Spartans and their third in 10 starts. Pleasant Mills was in front at 14-11 at the first quarter and boosted its margin to 23-17 at the half. However, the Ramblers came back in the third period to carry a 32-30 advantage into the final eight minutes. The Spartans rallied to take the lead midway through the final bracket to win by three points. Dave Myers was the Spartans’ top scorer with 24 points, half on free throws. Myers, fouled four times in the final quarter, all with the penalty shot added, hit eight for eight to spark the winners. No other Spartan hit double figures. Yellow Jackets Are Defeated By Ossian Bears Tuesday Night
The Decatur Yellow Jackets were sent down to their sixth defeat in a row Tuesday night, dropping a 79-65 contest to the Ossian Bears on the Wells county team’s court. Again it was a matter of giving up too many points which finished the Yellow Jackets chcnces of their second win of the season, as Ossian tallied 21 points in the first quarter and 45 in the first half, enroute to totaling 79 points. The Bears, who were defeated by Adams Central in their last outing, jumped into an early lead and were never headed. Six players broke into the scoring column in the first quarter for the Ossian outfit, as the Bears chalked up a nine-point lead, 2112, at the end of the first period. Big Period The Jackets upped their output to 17 points in the second quarter, but the Bears threw 24 points through the meshes in the same eight-minute period, and had the contest on ice at the halftime, holding a 45-29 margin. A Gause Tops Decatur Steve Gause racked up his highest point total of the season in leading the Decatur scorers. Gause connected for five fielders and five free throws in tallying 15 points. Tom Maddox scored 14, while Greg Ladd chipped in with 11 and Bob McClure added 10. Coach Bill McColly’s team played without the services of their leading scorer, senior guard Jim Martin. Martin was unable to see action due to a badly bruised and swollen toe. Receive Results Os Junior Postal Match Mayor Donald Gage and Mark Colchin, coaches of the Hot Shots, rifle team of Decatud Catholic high school, have received results of the 1962 Mississippi Valley championship junior postal match, in which the Hot Shots competed. The Decatur team finished 13th in a field of 20 teams in the scholastic division with a score of 1,404 points. Joe Geimer was top individual for the Hot Shots, placing 20th with a score of 371. Other members of the local team who participated were Fred Schurger, Mike Reynolds, Alan Converset, Steve Colchin and Tom Foos. Two Nuclear Blasts Set Off By Russia WASHINGTON (UPI) — Russia touched off two intermediate yield nuclear blasts in the atmosphere over its Novaya Zemlya test center in the arctic Tuesday, according to the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The explosions were the 33rd and 34th Soviet tests announced by the AEC during the current Russian series.
