Estimate Holiday Death Toll At 750 I CHICAGO (UPI) — Christmas I weekend traffic accidents may claim the lives of uo to 750 perI sons, the National Safety Council has estimated. From 27,000 to, 33,000 persons I also will suffer disabling injuries during the period, the council said Monday. Based on experience from previous* Christmas holidays, the council forecast that mote than half of the drivers involved in fatal accidents will have been drinking. One' of four traffic -deaths will be that of a pedestrian during the holiday, the council said. Although the toll is estimated to run from 650 to 750, the safety council president, Howard Pyle, said it could be less if drivers and pedestrians observe basic traffic safety rules. The weekend will last 102 hours, from 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, to midnight Tuesday, Dec. 25. “Last minvte shoppers and holiday revelers require extra caution on the part of motorists, especially wjth Jhe early hours of darkness at tnis time of year,” Pyle said regarding the pedestrian toll. He pointed out that the majority of such accidents happened during the last six hours of Christmas Eve and during thp same hours Christmas night. • Pyle also urged those who will be celebrating not to try to drive or walk home. “Take a cab or bus instead,” he said. During a comparable 102 hour, non-holiday weekend at this time of year, 470 persons are killed and some 20,000 suffer disabling injuries, the council said.
