Decatur Commodores Edge Pleasant Mills Spartans In Two Overtime Sessions By Pete Reynolds —■' ,

Decatur’s Commodores, after frittering away a 12-point third quarter lead, edged the Pleasant Mills Spartans, 54-52, in a double overtime battle at the Decatur gym Tuesday night. A driving layup by Larry Hake, with 50 seconds to go in the second overtime session, was the winning fielder for the Commodores. Hake intercepted an errant Pleasant Mills pass back of the center line and dribbled all the way under for the score. The teams were tied at 50-50 at the expiration of the regulation playing time. Rex Funk put Pleasant Mills ahead at 52-50 after 20 seconds of the first overtime, but Dan Lose knotted the score with a fielder with 1:15 to play, and neither team could score again. The Spartans took an early lead o* 5-2 after a minute and a ha’f of the game, but the Commodores scored the next six points to take an 8-5 advantage after three minutes had elapsed, and never trailed until the first overtime. The Commodores held a 14-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Spartans stayed close until late in the second period, when the Commodores built up a 10-point bulge, 30-20, at the main intermission. The Decatur lads increased their advantage by two points to lead at the end of the third quarter, 1533, but the Spartans then, begin their comeback. The Decatur Ipad was sliced to one point at 45-44, as the Spartans scored 11 straight points in the first four minutes of the final stanza. Ed Kohne counted Decatur’s first points of the period when he hit on a pair of free throws. Kohne hit another twopointer and then added a foul toss for a 50-44 Decatur lead with two H. S. Basketball

Head Os Gotham Bowl Declares Game Definite NEW YORK (UPD—The Gotham Bowl game is on. < Bob Curran, director of the Gotham Bowl, says “all kinks have been ironed out’’ and the game between the University of Miami (Fla.) and Nebraska will be played as originally scheduled Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The chief kink was a $60,000 guarantee demanded by both teams, and Curran said the sum will be placed in escrow today. “The money is being put up and the game is on,’’ Curran declared. “I can also, say that the Gotham Bowl game definitely will be televised.’’ Earlier in the week both teams had indicated they might pull out of the game if the money was not put in escrow but officials of both universities apparently have been satisfied since then,.. Phillies And Angels Make Player Trade PHILADELPHIA (UPI) — The Philadelphia Phillies traded outfielder Jackie Davis to the Los Angeles Angels of the American League Tuesday for catcher Earl Averill, son of Howard Averill, Cleveland standout of the 1930’5. The Phils said Averill will be used as a third catcher and a pinch hitter to back up Clay Dalrymple and Bob Oldis. Averill, like his dad, broke in withthe Indians, went to the Cubs and was with Los Angeles for two seasons, but was used mostly as a pinch hitter in 1962. He batted .266 with 21 home runs in 115 games during 1961 and .219 with four homers in 92 games last season. Davis hit .213 in 38 games for the Phils in 1962 before he was sent back to Buffalo, of the Intemational League where he averaged .244 in 57 games and a .320 average with Buffalo in 1961. strike, Joe Gustafson, ticket manager for the game, said Tuesday’s ticket sales were “the best yet.” “We did 30 per cent more selling of tickets yesterday than we did on any other day since the sale started,” Gustafson said.

Hartford-Geneva Game Rescheduled The Hartford-Geneva game, postponed last —Fridaybecause of severe storm conditions, has been rescheduled for Saturday night, Jan 5. Gorillas Lose To Redkey By 84-81 Score The Hartford Gorillas suffered their third loss of the season Tuesday night, dropping a high-scoring battle to the Redkey Wolves, 8481, at the Redkey gym. The loss makes Hartford's second record 4-3. The Gorillas led by two points at the first quarter, 16-14, by seven at the half, 36-29, but by only one marker at the third penr iod, 57-56. Redkey jumped into a 12-point lead in the final period and the Gorillas could not overcome that margin. Ron Habegger, of Hartford, was the game's leading scorer with 24 points. Hartack Reported In Good Condition MIAMI (UPD — Veteran Jockey William Hartack was reported in “satisfactory” condition at a hospital late Tuesday after he was thrown from his horse in a race at Tropical Park. Hartack, who is one of the most fiery and successful little men in the riding field, suffered a head injury which Baptist Hospital officials said did not show up as a fracture under X-ray.
