Yellow Jackets Lose To Concordia Cadets After Rugged Battle, 79 To 68
By Pete Reynolds Decatur's Yellow Jackets, after a rugged battle, finally bowed to superior height and weight Saturday night, dropped a 79-68 decision to the Fort Wayne Concordia Cadets at the Decatur gym in the first Northeastern Indiana conference clash of the season. It was the third loss of the week for the Jackets against high ranking foes, and their fourth setback in a row after their seasonopening victory. The victory was Concordia’s fifth in six contests, and tied the Cadets wiht the Columbia City Eagles for the NEIC lead, each with 3-0 records. Bill McColley’s Jackets led only once in Saturday’s rugged struggle, that at 16-14 in the first quarter, but they were not out of the ball game until the last four minutes. After an early 5-5 tie, the Cadets moved to a seven-point lead at 13-6, with 3:33 to go, but the Jackets pulled to a 14-14 tie on a pair of two-pointers by Bob McClure, and then Tom Maddox shot the Jackets in front, 16-14. The teams were knotted at 16-16 and 1818, with Dave Widenhofer’s first fielder of the night giving the Fort Wayne quintet a 20-18 margin at the end of the first quarter. The Cadets scored the first five points of the second period but the Jackets held on tenaciously and trailed by only three markers, 39-36, at half-time. Concordia twice held seven-point leads in early minutes of the third quarter, but the Jackets kept battling back and John Custer’s free throw in the closing seconds knotted the teams at 55-55 entering the final bracket. Three buckets by Tom Wilcoxson and one fielder and two free throws by Tom Baack overmatched a lone two-pointer by Maddox and the Cadets had rolled to a 65-57 lead with 4:23 to play. Concordia’s superior size and foul trouble for the Jackets finally took their toll and the Cadets carried on to. their final 11-t>oint victory. Baack, one of the areas’ toprated players, led the Concordia victory with 24 points. Wllcoxson tallied 15, Widenhofer 14 and Dave Stauffer 12. Maddox was Decatur’s top scorer with 23 points, McClure counted 16 and Jirp Martin 12. Four of Decatur’s starters carried four fouls through much of the final quarter, with Martin and McClure both fouling out. The Cadets con-
