Light - Stidded‘ldei Home’ Is Easy on the Eyes work area without glare. The kitchen is ta builder SldneTColen t “Idea Home” ill St Petersburg, Fla. Ottier <*«** n slide tures are the automatic electric range with surface units in slideout section below eye-level oven, built-in automatic ele(t^ ic washer, electric refrigerator-freeser (net shown) mixer unit built into counter, and ample outlets for electric housewares.

Creative use of modern lighting is the theme of builder Sidney Chien’s “Idea Home” in St. Petersburg, Fla., which has attracted more than a thousand visitors a day to his 3,400 home development. “Essentially We wanted to dramatize for our prospects the extra burHb-ln . lighting values of our Gold Medallion homes,” Colen explains. The Idea Home contains a total of 134 separate lights in an almost endless variety of applications. Remote control and dimmer switches are numerous and centralized control panels are located strategically throughout the house. The house itself is one of Colen’s standard $14,000 models. Although thousands of dollars worth of extra lighting installations are ineluded in the model, most of the individual lighting ideas are inexpensive. Many of them are already incorporated in standard Gold Medallion Homes, all of which must be wired and lighted to meet above average standards. The living room of the idea model includes special lighting hidden by valances, built-in ceiling spotlighting to highlight portions of the rooms, and a variety of unique floor and table lighting. The intensity of most of the lights can be controlled to achieve a wide range of lighting effects and moods. Even in his standard Gold Medallion Homes Colen installs hidden valance lighting in living and dining areas and provides remote controls at all room entrances. In addition, a central control panel in the bedroom allows the owner to turn on or off all of the built-in lighting both inside and outside of the house. “Lighting can do much to make a home express the individual tastes of the owner.” Colen points out. “With proper lighting he can soften or dramatize a particular structural feature of the home. “Adequate lighting is perhaps the greatest promoter of safety and security in today’s homes. It

lights suggest a leisurely way of life. The renaissance of outdoor gas lighting began approximately four years ago but their importance to the home has been given added impetus by the Civil War Centennial. The emphasis on American styling, regardless of the period, is another factor. The fixtures blend well with any type of decor — Victorian, Provincial, Empire, Regency, Colonial or Contemporary. Gas light fixtures, for use both indoors and out, exude an air of warmth and intimacy. The light is romantic, mellow and soft, never harsh or glaring. The major use of gas lighting, about 90 per cent, is for out of doors. Gas lights repel insects and require little care. They can be turned on and off manually, by remote control, or automatically with special devices installed on the lamp itself. They provide etohoffflcaT Alumination with natural or propane gas. Tough Wood Sitka spruce and west coast hemlock are so strong in relation to their weight that they were widely used for airplane construction in both World Wars. Hemlock now is used as a construction lumber where its great strength is important, but it is also used as interior paneling and exterior siding because of its great beauty and its lovely champagne coloring.

prevents accidents by illuminating dangerous steps and stairways and discourages burglars by keeping grounds and entrances bright and visible from the street.' GAS HEAT BEST BUY Only the very rich can afford poor heating equipment. This warning is sounded by the American Gas Association in calling to the mistaken economy of having an inferior heating system installed in the home. Builders and buyers of new homes frequently find that they can’t afford everything they would like to have. Consequently, says A.G.A., they start looking for places to cut costs. Because some heating systems are lower in first cost than others, the temptation is to select the heating system that appears to be cheapest without taking the long range maintenances and operating costs into consideration. This mistaken emphasis on low purchase price overlooks the fact that an inadequate system generally costs far moire to operate, requires frequent servicing" and seldom can supply sufficient heat to meet sub-normal temperatures. A properly - sized properly installed gas heating system will usually last the life of the 'hbuse. Savings in maintenance and operating costs not only quickly make up the difference in first cost but are realized oyer the life of the equipment. Anda properly-seized gas system will keep the enure house comfortably warril regardless of outside weather. Anything else, the-American Gas Association says, is false economy. Buyers Under 40 More than half the homes sold in the last nine years went to buyers under 40 years of age, according to a survey of the National Association of Home Builders.
