Decatur Commodores Beaten By Monmouth Eagles Friday, 65-50

By Pete Reynolds The Monmouth Eagles chalked up their fourth victory in five starts Friday night, defeating the Decatur Catholic Commodores, 6550, at the Decatur gym. It was the fourth loss for the Commodores as against two triumphs. George Waning’s lads kept the game close only during a cold first quarter in which both teams had wretched shooting luck. But the Eagles turned hot in the second period and quickly built up a sizeable lead which they protected the rest of the way. Gene Bienz broke the scoring ice with a free throw and the Eagles never trailed. The same lad’s first field goal made it 3-0 before Mike Baker hit for the Commodores. The Decatur lads stayed right on Monmouth’s heels all through the first period and trailed by only four points, 14-10, at the end of the quarter. But Dennis Braun hit three from the field and Don Brown and Clarence Scheumann one each and the Eagles had erupted to a 25-10 bulge in slightly more than three minutes of the second frame before Dan Lose broke the spell for the Commodores. The Eagles upped their advantage to 18 points, 39-21, at the half time rest. The Commodores battled the Eagles on slightly better than even terms the rest of the ball game, but that disastrous second quarter was too much to overcome. The Eagles led at the third period. 51-35, and the closest the Decatur lads could come in the final quarter was 11 points at 5948. Don Brown was the game’s top ' scorer with 24 points, Braun added 13 and Scheumann and Schieferstein 10 each. For the Commodores, Larry Hake led with 16 and Ed Kohne counted 12. Both teams shot well from the foul line, the Commodores converting 16 of 21 free throws, the Eagles nine of 13. Both teams will play once next week, the Commodores hosting Pleasant Mills Tuesday at the' Decatur gym, and the Eagles meeting Hartford at the Berne gym Friday.
